This work proposes the use of Genetic Algorithms (GA) in tracing and recognizing the pericardium contour of the human heart using Computed Tomography (CT) images. We assume that each slice of the pericardium can be modelled by an ellipse, the parameters of which need to be optimally determined. An optimal ellipse would be one that closely follows the pericardium contour and, consequently, separates appropriately the epicardial and mediastinal fats of the human heart. Tracing and automatically identifying the pericardium contour aids in medical diagnosis...

Computer-aided detection systems play an important role for the detection of breast abnormalities using mammograms. Global segmentation of mass in mammograms is a complex process due to low contrast mammogram images, irregular shape of mass, speculated margins, and the presence of intensity variations of pixels. This work presents a new approach for mass detection in mammograms, which is based on the variational level set function. Mesh-free based radial basis function (RBF) collocation approach is employed for the evolution of level set function for segmentation of breast as well as suspicious mass region...

AGRO100 (also known as AS1411) is a G-rich oligonucleotide that has long been established as a potent anti-cancer aptamer. However, the structure of AGRO100 remained unresolved, due to the co-existence of multiple different G-quadruplex conformations. We identified a DNA sequence named AT11, derived from AGRO100, which formed a single major G-quadruplex conformation and exhibited a similar anti-proliferative activity as AGRO100. The solution structure of AT11 revealed a four-layer G-quadruplex comprising of two propeller-type parallel-stranded subunits connected through a central linker...

The pluripotency transcriptional network in embryonic stem cells (ESCs) is composed of distinct functional units including the core and Myc units. It is hoped that dissection of the cellular functions and interconnections of network factors will aid our understanding of ESC and cancer biology. Proteomic and genomic approaches have identified Nac1 as a member of the core pluripotency network. However, previous studies have predominantly focused on the role of Nac1 in psychomotor stimulant response and cancer pathogenesis...

Harmful mutations of the BRCA tumor suppressor genes result in a greater lifetime risk for malignancy-breast and ovarian cancers in particular. An increased risk for male breast, fallopian tube, primary peritoneal, pancreatic, prostate, and colon cancers also has been reported. The BRCA gene is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern and tends to be highly penetrant; thus, there is an increased incidence of these cancers in affected families. Compared with sporadic tumors, BRCA-associated malignancies have unique manifestations, clinical features, and pathologic profiles...

My laboratory investigations have been driven by an abiding interest in understanding the consequences of genetic rearrangement in evolution and disease, and in using viruses to elucidate fundamental mechanisms in biology. Starting with bacteriophages and moving to the retroviruses, my use of the tools of genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and biophysics has spanned more than half a century-from the time when DNA structure was just discovered to the present day of big data and epigenetics. Both riding and contributing to the successive waves of technology, my laboratory has elucidated fundamental mechanisms in DNA replication, repair, and recombination...

Histoplasma capsulatum is a saprophytic fungus that in immunocompetent individuals causes self-limited pulmonary infection; however, in immunosuppressed patients involvement of the reticuloendothelial system, alimentary tract, urinary tract, and central nervous system is fairly common. Rarely patients present with bilateral adrenal masses which mimic tuberculosis and metastasis on radiology because of associated central necrosis. Ultrasound guided FNAC aided by special stains like Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) and Gomori Methenamine Silver (GMS) may help in early diagnosis in such dubious cases...

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is an oncogenic retrovirus of cats. Immunoassays for the p27 core protein of FeLV aid in the detection of FeLV infections. Commercial microtiter-plate ELISAs have rapid protocols and visual result interpretation, limiting their usefulness in high-throughput situations. The purpose of our study was to validate the PetChek FeLV 15 ELISA, which is designed for the reference laboratory, and incorporates sequential, orthogonal screening and confirmatory protocols. A cutoff for the screening assay was established with 100% accuracy using 309 feline samples (244 negative, 65 positive) defined by the combined results of FeLV PCR and an independent reference p27 antigen ELISA...

Two important goals in orthopedic implants research are to promote osseointegration and prevent infection. However, much of previous efforts have been paid on the design of coatings either to enhance osseointegration while ignoring antibacterial activity or vice versa, to prevent infection while ignoring bone integration. Here, we designed a multifunctional mineralized collagen coating on titanium with the aid of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanocrystals to control the release of naringin, a Chinese herbal medicine which could promote osseointegration and prevent bacterial infection...

In recent years, investigation into the cognitive and neural mechanisms of autobiographical memory has been aided by the use of experimental paradigms incorporating wearable camera technology. By effortlessly capturing first-person images of one's life events, these cameras provide a rich set of naturalistic stimuli that can later be used to trigger the recall of specific episodes. Here, we chronicle the development and progression of such studies in behavioral and neuroimaging examinations of both clinical and nonclinical adult populations...

Thrombocytopenia is frequent among sick neonates. While most cases are transient, some neonates experience prolonged and severe thrombocytopenia. These infants often pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, and may receive large numbers of platelet transfusions. Romiplostim (ROM) is a thrombopoietin (TPO)-receptor-agonist approved for treatment of adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). The immature platelet fraction (IPF) is a novel measure of newly produced platelets, which could aid with the diagnostic evaluation of thrombocytopenic neonates...

The understanding of lithium solvation and transport in ionic liquids is important due to the possible applications in electrochemical devices. Using first principles simulations aided with the metadynamics approach we study the free energy landscape for lithium at infinite dilution conditions in ethylammonium nitrate, a protic ionic liquid. We analyze the local structure of the liquid around the lithium cation and find a quantitative picture in agreement with experimental findings. Our simulations show that the lowest two free energy minima correspond to conformations with the lithium solvated either by 3 or 4 nitrates ions with a transition barrier between them of 0...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Intraoperative cholangiogram (IOC) is commonly used to detect retained bile duct stones. This often leads to another invasive procedure such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). However, due to the variation in methods and results of IOC, it is unclear if clinical factors will aid in identifying true choledocholithiasis. METHODS: All cholecystectomies in a 3 year period were examined retrospectively for positive IOC. Sonographic bile duct dilation and transaminase levels at admission including trends during the course of hospitalization and prior to ERCP were evaluated...
