Tyler J Moon, Christopher L Brace
This study presents the development of a dual-slot antenna for small animal tumor ablation. By using a dual-slot design at 8 GHz, it was hypothesized that smaller and more spherical ablations can be produced. After computer-aided design optimization, antennas were fabricated and ablations performed at 5-20 W for 15-120 s with the objective of creating ablations with a diameter/length aspect ratio of at least 0.9. The new dual-slot design at 8 GHz created significantly more spherical ablations than a commercial antenna at 2...

A 56-year-old Japanese man with liver cirrhosis (LC) due to hepatitis C virus was admitted to our hospital for radiofrequency ablation of residual tumor following lusutrombopag administration. Laboratory tests revealed thrombocytopenia and leukopenia. The patient's LC was managed, and he was classified as Child-Pugh A. After admission, lusutrombopag was administered for 7 days. The platelet count increased to over 50,000/mm(3) after 7-14 days and returned to previous levels 50 days after administration. Leukocyte and erythrocyte counts also increased in response to the treatment and stayed elevated for over 120 days...

The chalcone derivatives 3a,b were cyclized upon reaction with thiourea to give the pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine derivatives 5a,b. Condensation of 5a,b and their hydrazide derivatives 8a,b with cyclic and acyclic glucose gave the condensed S- and N-glycosides 7a,b and 9a,b, respectively. Reaction of 3b with ethyl cyanoacetate followed by reaction with cyclic glucose afforded a mixture of the O- and/or N-glycoside isomers 12 and 13, respectively. The pyrazolo[3,4-c]pyrazole derivative 14 was also obtained from the reaction of 3b with hydrazine hydrate...

Activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) plays a pivotal role in the development of liver fibrosis. C1q/tumor necrosis factor-related protein 3 (CTRP3), a member of CTRPs, was involved in fibrosis. However, little is known about the role of CTRP3 in liver fibrosis. This study aimed to determine its role in liver fibrosis and explore the possible mechanism. Our results demonstrated that CTRP3 was lowly expressed in liver fibrosis tissues and activated HSCs. Overexpression of CTRP3 inhibited the proliferation and migration of HSCs, as well as suppressed the expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) in transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1)-stimulated HSC-T6 cells...

Liver fibrosis is the consequence of hepatocyte injury that leads to the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSC). The treatment of choice is Liver transplantation; however, it has many problems such as surgery-related complications, immunological rejection and high costs associated with the procedure. Stem cell-based therapy would be a potential alternative, so the aim of this study is to investigate the therapeutic potential of human umbilical cord mononuclear cells (MNC) and mouse bone marrow cells (BMC) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver fibrosis in mice and compare it with that of silymarin...

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a close association of type 2 diabetes and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Exenatide (Ex-4), a potent diabetes drug targeting glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R), is protective against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the Ex-4 function and GLP-1R status have yet been explored in HCC. Herein we investigated the effect of Ex-4 in diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-treated mice consuming control or high-fat high-carbohydrate diet. Administration of Ex-4 significantly improved obesity-induced hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia and reduced HCC multiplicity in obese DEN-treated mice, in which suppressed proliferation and induced apoptosis were confined to tumor cells...

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent liver condition in the West. The prevalence and severity of NAFLD is higher and the prognosis worse in patients with psoriasis. The pathogenic link between psoriasis and NAFLD is chronic inflammation and peripheral insulin resistance, a common finding in diseases associated with psoriasis. NAFLD should therefore be ruled out during the initial evaluation of patients with psoriasis, in particular if they show signs of metabolic syndrome and require systemic treatment...

Magnetic resonance contrast agents with T1-T2 dual mode contrast capability have attracted considerable interest because they offer complementary and synergistic diagnostic information, leading to high imaging sensitivity and accurate diagnosis. Here, we reported a facile strategy to construct albumin based nanoparticles loaded with hydrophobic gadolinium chelates by hydrophobic interaction for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We synthesized a glycyrrhetinic acid-containing Gd-DOTA derivative (GGD) and loaded GGD molecules into BSA nanoparticles to form GGD-BSA nanoparticles (GGD-BSA NPs)...

Lactic acidosis is a potentially life-threatening complication characterized by accumulation of blood lactate resulting in low arterial pH. The majority of lactic acidosis in malignancies are reported in association with hematologic malignancies. It may result from an imbalance between lactate production and hepatic lactate utilization, but the exact pathophysiology is far more complex than what we can fathom from current micromolecular studies. We report a case of a 71-year-old male with metastatic lung cancer presenting with fatal lactic acidosis in the absence of liver involvement...

BACKGROUND: Only approximately one in ten pancreas cancer patients is a candidate for potentially curative resection of this disease. Even this small fraction of patients has a poor prognosis following pancreatico-duodenectomy. The disease has an anatomic location that makes it difficult for the surgeon to maintain adequate margins of resection and prevent tumor spillage at the time of resection. Also, the disease is biologically aggressive and even with a complete visible resection of the disease, micrometastases are likely to remain behind...
