AIM: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition of the central nervous system. Today any therapeutic agent has not been proved to heal this complex condition yet. Asiatic acid (AA), which has been used in the far Eastern countries as an anti-inflammatory agent, antioxidant and wound healing therapeutic for years. We investigated efficiency of AA administration just after spinal cord injury in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats ( n =32) were drafted in to Four experimental groups (Laminectomy, Laminectomy+ Trauma, Vehicle, AA) ramdomly...

The effects of exercise and physical activity on cognitive function and brain health have been established by longitudinal and intervention studies. However, it is not clear whether exercise has positive effects on cognitive function in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Further studies, including a ramdomized controlled trial with a larger sample size, are required to identify the effects of exercise and multicomponent intervention on cognitive function in the older adults with mild cognitive impairment...

We perform discrete element simulations of homogeneous shearing of frictionless cylinders and show that the particles are characterized by orientational order and form a granular liquid crystal. For elongated and flat cylinders, the alignment is in the plane of shearing, while cylinders having an aspect ratio equal to 1 and 0.8 show no orientational order. We show that the particle pressure is insensitive to the cylinder aspect ratio and well predicted by the kinetic theory of granular gases, with a singularity in the radial distribution function at contact different from that for frictionless spheres...

BACKGROUND: It has been proven that nm23-H1 gene is an important metastaticsuppressed gene of lung cancer. In order to screen the differential expression genes related to nm23-H1 , we constructed the suppression subtractive cDNA libraries of human large cell lung cancer line L9981 transfected and untransfected with nm23-H1 gene by suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) in this study, which lay a solid foundation for further screening and cloning metastatic-related genes of nm23-H1...

The objective of this work was to estimate the nucleotidic variation between two groups of tepezcuintles (Agouti paca) from the states of Campeche and Quintana Roo, Mexico and within members of each group. Blood samples were collected from eleven A. paca kept in captivity. DNA from leukocytic cells was used for Ramdom Amplification of DNA Polimorphism (RAPD). The primers three 5'-d(GTAGACCCGT)- 3' and six 5'-d(CCCGTCAGCA)- 3' were selected from de Amersham kit (Ready.To.Go. RAPD Analysis Beads, Amersham Pharmacia Biotech), because they produced an adequate number of bands...

The genetic diversity of 29 endophytic bacterial strains isolated from apoplastic sap of the medullary parenchym of the stem of healthy sugarcane plants grown in Cuba was analysed by Two Primers-Ramdom Amplified Polymorphic DNA fingerprinting (TP-RAPD) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The strains were distributed into 17 groups on the basis of their TP-RAPD patterns, and a representative strain from each group was subjected to 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Analysis of these sequences showed that the isolates belong to a wide variety of phylogenetic groups being closely related to species of genera Bacillus and Staphylococcus from Firmicutes, Microbacterium, Micrococcus and Kokuria from Actinobacteria, Rhizobium and Gluconacetobacter from alpha -Proteobacteria, Comamonas and Xanthomonas from beta-Proteobacteria, and Acinetobacter and Pantoea from gamma-Proteobacteria...

OBJECTIVE: Although much has been written on how to manage recurrent pharyngotonsillitis, it remains a controversial topic. The composition of normal commensal oropharynx bacteria may be disrupted by frequently using antimicrobials, by inhibiting sensitive organisms and by allowing resistant organisms to overgrowth. This may cause the recurrence of acute episodes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ribosomal immunotherapy in the prophylaxis of recurrent pharyngotonsillitis...

Yeasts have numerous applications in modern and traditional biotechnology. They take place in production of food, unicellular protein and products with added value, and in the last decades they have been incorporated to the biotechnology industry as host in the production of eukaryotes proteins. Apart from their advantages, some genera are the causes of mycosis on man and in some cases, are opportunistic pathogens associated to diseases such as HIV. They are also agents responsible for the damaging of fresh and elaborated food for human consumption...
