Little is known about the process of how nurses transition between vocational training and institutions of higher education. Understanding this process provides educators with the knowledge to support new groups of university students making this transition. Grounded theory (GT) was used to explore and understand this process. Three studies from a 7-year research program were used as data. The analysis led to the generation of a GT illuminating the process of students transitioning from post-LPN to BN. This GT illustrates how students overcome difficulties encountered moving to a more complex nursing role...

BACKGROUND: Native Hawaiians, representing 25% of Hawai'i's population, suffer socioeconomic and health strains as evidenced by overrepresentation in low-wage jobs without health insurance and a higher prevalence of chronic disease compared with Hawai'i's other ethnic groups. Native Hawaiians are more likely to attend community colleges than 4-year colleges and have high dropout rates. OBJECTIVE: To describe a culturally relevant, community-based action research approach to build a program to keep Hawaiians in college to advance career options and improve long-term health and socioeconomic outcomes...

This paper presents findings from a qualitative descriptive study that explored the professional socialization experiences of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who attended an online university to earn a Baccalaureate degree in nursing (BN), a prerequisite to writing the Canadian Registered Nurse (RN) qualifying exam. The project was framed from a constructivist worldview and Haas and Shaffir's theory of legitimation. Participants were 27 nurses in a Post-LPN to BN program who came from across Canada to complete required practicums...

In 2003, the Colorado Permanente Medical Group (CPMG), a 780-member, multispecialty physician group that provides ambulatory and hospital care principally in metropolitan Denver and Boulder, embarked upon a multifaceted program to leverage physician leadership to address the nursing shortage. Designated as the "Preferred Clinical Partner Program" (the PCP Program), CPMG sought to participate in solving the nursing shortage by engaging in a number of initiatives. Through an initial fund of $1 million, over $350,000 was used to fund nursing scholarships, over $150,000 was used to provide advanced training to a select group of health care professionals in a program that may be the first physician-partnered MA-to-LPN and RN-to-BSN initiative, and over $500,000 was devoted to building and expanding nursing simulation laboratories...

Canadian Licensed Practical Nurses continuing their education in an online Bachelor of Nursing program face unique barriers as they transition towards a new and more complex nursing role. This qualitative descriptive study explored Post Licensed Practical Nurse to Bachelor of Nursing (Post LPN to BN) students' perceptions of their experiences during their education. George Kelly's (1955/1991) psychology of personal constructs, which seeks to understand how individuals perceive the world around them, was the theoretical framework for this three year longitudinal project in which 10 Post LPN to BN students were interviewed at the beginning, middle and end of their program...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Laparoscopic-guided radiofrequency ablation (LRFA) has been introduced as a minimally invasive nephron-sparing management option for renal tumors. Many patients who desire treatment present with multiple comorbidities, which poses a therapeutic challenge. Our purpose is to determine if multipass LRFA is comparable, in terms of surgical risk and immediate postoperative outcomes, to laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study identified 36 and 33 patients who underwent LRFA and LPN, respectively...

The shortage of registered nurses (RN) had made licensed practical nurse (LPN) to RN educational programs common. These programs give credit for previous learning and advance place the LPN in the nursing curriculum. Faculty have developed courses to ensure that the LPN is academically prepared to enter the nursing program. However, is the LPN socially prepared to enter into a cohesive group of traditional students? The authors discuss a peer mentoring program designed to ease the social integration of the LPNs, resulting in their perception that they are an equal and valued member of the class...

The recent neuroimaging literature gives conflicting evidence about whether the left fusiform gyrus (FG) might recognize words as unitary visual objects. The sensitivity of the left FG to word frequency might provide a neural basis for the orthographic input lexicon theorized by reading models [Patterson, K., Marshall, J. C., & Coltheart, M. (1985). OBJECTIVE: To compare a contemporary series of laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) and open partial nephrectomy (OPN) at one institution, to evaluate the size and types of tumour in each group and the early outcome after each procedure, as LPN is replacing open radical nephrectomy as the standard of care for uncomplicated renal tumours but partial nephrectomy remains significantly more difficult laparoscopically, especially if the goal is to duplicate the open surgical technique. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the records of all patients who underwent partial nephrectomy at our institution from January 2000 to April 2004, identifying 66 who had LPN and compared them with 59 who had OPN (mean age at LPN and OPN, 62...

Nursing researchers have investigated students' and faculty members' views of effective clinical teaching. Various students (diploma, ADN, BSN) and their respective faculty have been studied, and some investigators have researched opinions of part-time students. No study was available that analyzed effective clinical teaching from the perspectives of students representing various formats of nursing education (basic BSN, RN-BSN, LPN-BSN students) and whether they were full or part time...

Success was ultimately reflected by the lack of difference in the performance of the generic BSN nursing student and the LPN to BSN student. While there were slight variations in NCLEX-RN examination pass rates-LPNs, 100 percent; control group of generic students, 97 percent-this initiative showed the enormous potential of a predominantly female population of health care providers who have frequently been discounted by baccalaureate nursing education. Some of the critical factors leading to success in the Teagle Initiative seem to be: an interested, supportive faculty, counseling support, curricula revised to acknowledge the LPNs' prior learning, and tuition and resource support...
