BACKGROUND: The SynCardia total artificial heart (TAH) provides complete circulatory support by replacing both native ventricles. Accepted indications include bridge to transplantation and destination therapy. We review our experience with TAH implantation during a period when axial flow pump became available. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the demographics, clinical characteristics and survival of all patients receiving the TAH. Acute Type A aortic dissection is a surgical emergency. Urgent repair is indicated to avoid complications such as acute aortic insufficiency, coronary ischemia and aortic rupture with cardiac tamponade. This report details the management of a patient with acute Type A aortic dissection complicated by an extensive anterolateral myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock who was successfully bridged to transplantation with a total artificial heart.

These devices are more portable as well, allowing patients to await cardiac transplantation in an outpatient setting.
