A luminescent terbium ions/reduced graphene oxide complex (Tb-RGO) was successfully and rapidly synthesized by the microwave hydrothermal reaction via the interactions between terbium ions and the active oxygen functional groups of graphene oxide. The as-prepared material was porous stacked by multilayer graphene in all directions. Thus, the resulting product owed the high specific surface area, high adsorption capacity and ultra-fast adsorption rate. Combined with the characteristic photoluminescence derived from terbium ions, the material has potential applications in biosensing and environmental protection...

High pressure (HP) was applied to pre-rigor rabbit muscles (PRRMs) for the manufacture of value-added gel-type products. A 2×3 factorial design was adopted for HP-treatment (100, 200 and 300MPa for 15 or 180s) to PRRMs. The HP-treated meat was used for gel preparation and determination of water mobility properties and textural profiles. Salt-soluble meat proteins (SSMP) were then extracted from meat for estimating the tertiary conformational changes (hydrophobic and sulfhydryl groups). The water-holding capacity of treated samples increased significantly (P<0...

TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are employed in many products (paints, personal care products, especially sunscreens, plastics, paper, water potabilization and food products) and are then released into the environment from these products. These nanoparticles present potential risk to freshwater and marine microalgae. The primary toxicity mechanism is adsorption between NPs and microalgae (heteroagglomeration); however, studies of interactions of this kind are scarce. We investigated the heteroagglomeration process that occurs between two forms of TiO2 material, nanoparticles and bulk, and three different microalgae species, and under different environmental conditions (freshwater and marine water), in order to assess the influence of pH and ionic strength (IS)...

Many ecosystem models incorrectly treat urban areas as devoid of vegetation and biogenic carbon (C) fluxes. We sought to improve estimates of urban biomass and biogenic C fluxes using existing, nationally available data products. We characterized biogenic influence on urban C cycling throughout Massachusetts, USA using an ecosystem model that integrates improved representation of urban vegetation, growing conditions associated with urban heat island (UHI), and altered urban phenology. Boston's biomass density is 1/4 that of rural forests, however 87% of Massachusetts' urban landscape is vegetated...

BACKGROUND: Androgenic alopecia (AGA) occurs as a result of the contraction of the anagen phase because of the action of androgens on hair follicles. TGF-β production from dermal papillae is enhanced by androgens, and growth inhibition of hair-follicle cells is induced by TGF-β, and the hair cycle progresses from the anagen phase to the catagen phase. We investigated both the in vitro and in vivo potency of the newly identified ALK5 inhibitor TP0427736 {6-[4-(4-methyl-1,3-thiazol-2-yl)-1H-imidazol-5-yl]-1,3-benzothiazole}...

The present study investigated the phenotypical, physiological and biochemical changes of rice plants exposed to high selenium (Se) concentrations to gain an insight into Se-induced phytotoxicity. Results showed that exposure of rice plants to excessive Se resulted in growth retardation and biomass reduction in connection with the decreased levels of chlorophyll, carotenoids and soluble proteins. The reduced water status and an associated increase in sugar and proline levels indicated Se-induced osmotic stress in rice plants...

This investigation reports a simplified approach for the purification of urinary siderocalin known as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL). Urinary NGAL was purified by tangential flow filtration and ion exchange chromatography. Isolated NGAL was analyzed by SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting and mass spectrometry (MS). The relative molecular mass of NGAL is 23674Da. Peptide mass fingerprinting of the purified NGAL yielded peptides that partially matched with known sequence of P80188 (NGAL_HUMAN). The tryptic digestion profile of isolated NGAL infers that it may be unique and additive molecule in the dictionary of urinary proteins...

Malic acid (MA) plays an important role in the regulation of plant growth, stomatal aperture, nutrition elements homeostasis and toxic metals tolerance. However, little is known about the effects of exogenous MA on physiological and biochemical responses to toxic metals in plants. To measure the alleviation roles of exogenous MA against cadmium (Cd), we determined the effects of MA on plant growth, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and the activities of anti-oxidant enzymes in the leaves of Miscanthus sacchariflorus (M...

C75 is a synthetic anticancer drug that inhibits fatty acid synthase (FAS) and shows a potent anorexigenic side effect. In order to find new cytotoxic compounds that do not impact food intake, we synthesized a new family of C75 derivatives. The most promising anticancer compound among them was UB006 ((4SR,5SR)-4-(hydroxymethyl)-3-methylene-5-octyldihydrofuran-2(3H)-one). The effects of this compound on cytotoxicity, food intake and body weight were studied in UB006 racemic mixture and in both its enantiomers separately...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 channel (TRPV1) is found to be expressed in endothelial cells (ECs) and activate endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). Recent studies implicate TRPV1 in attenuating inflammatory responses. However, the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects remain unclear. In this study, we investigated whether TRPV1 suppresses inflammatory responses of ECs via eNOS/NO pathway. METHODS: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and renal microvascular endothelial cells (MVECs) isolated from deoxycorticosterone (DOCA)-salt hypertensive mice were cultured in the presence of capsaicin (CAP, a specific TRPV1 agonist) with or without the specific inhibitor of TRPV1, NOS, or Ca(2+)-dependent phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathway, before lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation...

Potable water reuse has been adopted by cities suffering water scarcity in recent years. The microbial safety in water reuse, especially with respect to pathogenic viruses, is still a concern for water consumers. Membrane filtration can achieve sufficient removal of pathogenic viruses without disinfection byproducts, but the required energy is intensive. In this study, we graft-polymerized zwitterionic SPP ([3-(methacryloylamino) propyl] dimethyl (3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide) on a 150 kDa ultrafiltration polyethersulfone membrane to achieve a significantly higher virus removal...

Recent studies report high concentrations of haloacetic acids (HAAs), a prevalent class of toxic disinfection by-products, in swimming pool water (SPW). We investigated the removal of 9 HAAs by four commercial reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes. Under typical SPW conditions (pH 7.5 and 50 mM ionic strength), HAA rejections were >60% for NF270 with molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) equal to 266 Da and equal or higher than 90% for XLE, NF90 and SB50 with MWCOs of 96, 118 and 152 Da, respectively, as a result of the combined effects of size exclusion and charge repulsion...

The European Basic Safety Standards (EU-BSS) describes a set of NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material)-processing industries which produce residues known to be possibly enriched in NORs (Naturally Occurring Radionuclides). These residues can be used as a component in building materials aimed for public usage. The industrial processes, in which the residues are produced, are often complex and total monitoring can be challenging especially when the origin of the used raw materials varies. In this study the NORs present in non-ferrous fayalite slags of a secondary smelter facility, a NORM-processing industry according to the EU-BSS, were monitored daily during a one-month production period...

In among of various methods, nerve tissue engineering (NTE) is one of the applicable methods to reconstruct damaged nerve tissues. Electrospinning technique and biomaterials are often considered to fabricate fibrous tissue engineered conduits which have great similarity to the extracellular matrix on fiber structure. Polymer blending is one of the most effective methods for production of new materials with outstanding features. In this research, conduit structures as main part of the peripheral nerve regeneration based on polymer blend nanocomposites PCL/Collagen/NBG (poly (ε-caprolactone)/Collagen/nano bioglass) were manufactured by electrospinning technique...
