Avian chlamydiosis is a bacterial infectious disease of birds, considered until recently caused only by Chlamydia psittaci, that now includes the newly described species C. buteonis, C. avium, and C. gallinacea, associated with several avian hosts. Since its recognition as a species in 2014 and having chickens as one of its main hosts, C. gallinacea has already been described in backyard poultry on all continents. The present study aimed to survey by molecular techniques the presence and species of Chlamydia spp...

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to estimate the overall in vitro activity of bedaquiline (BDQ) against clinical isolates of Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABS) and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), considering BDQ as a repurposed drug for non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of publications in PubMed/ MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Embase up to April 15, 2023. Studies were included if they followed the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) criteria for drug susceptibility testing (DST)...

OBJECTIVES: The in vivo selection of E157Q plus R263K has not been reported in patients treated with coformulated bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (BIC/FTC/TAF). To the best of our knowledge, we hereby report the first case of high-grade INSTI resistance associated with the presence of these aminoacidic substitutions in a treatment-experienced HIV patient treated with BIC/FTC/TAF. METHODS: Clinical case report and review of the literature. RESULTS: A heavily treatment-experienced patient was switched to BIC/FTC/TAF due to drug-drug interactions after being diagnosed with disseminated Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare disease...

The number of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) lung disease cases is increasing in the United States (US). This respiratory disease is primarily caused by three NTM species: Mycobacterium avium, M. intracellulare, and M. abscessus. Since disease transmission could occur through water aerosolization, this study investigated these three species' occurrence (sporadic and persistent) in hot water samples collected from residences (n = 70) and office buildings (n = 30) across the US...

We report the first description of spinal cord mycobacterial spindle cell pseudotumor. A patient with newly diagnosed advanced HIV presented with recent-onset bilateral leg weakness and was found to have a hypermetabolic spinal cord mass on structural and molecular imaging. Biopsy and cultures from blood and cerebrospinal fluid confirmed spindle cell pseudotumor due to Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare. Despite control of HIV and initial reduction in pseudotumor volume on antiretrovirals and antimycobacterials (azithromycin, ethambutol, rifampin/rifabutin), he ultimately experienced progressive leg weakness due to pseudotumor re-expansion...

This longitudinal case study provides an in-detail report of the process towards the elimination of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) from a closed 450-head commercial dairy herd. In parallel, two diagnostic approaches were applied to all cows in annual intervals during 2012-2022: detection of MAP in individual faecal samples by bacteriological cultivation on solid medium and detection of MAP-specific antibodies by ELISA. For each annual sampling, the kappa coefficients for test agreement and the survival rates of MAP-positive and MAP-negative cows were calculated...

THE PROBLEM: Ante-mortem diagnosis of Johne's disease, caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), is normally achieved through faecal culture, PCR, or serological tests, but agreement as to which samples are positive for Johne's disease is often poor and sensitivities are low, particularly in early-stage infections. The potential solution: Mycobacterial cells contain very complex characteristic mixtures of mycolic acid derivatives that elicit antibodies during infection; this has been used to detect infections in humans...

Urinary tract infections occupy a special niche among diseases of infectious etiology. Many microorganisms associated with urinary tract infections, such as Klebsiella oxytoca , Enterococcus spp., Morganella morganii , Moraxella catarrhalis , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Proteus mirabilis , Staphylococcus aureus , Staphylococcus spp., and Candida spp., can form biofilms. The aim of this research was to study the effect of the enzyme L-lysine-Alpha-oxidase (LO) produced by the fungus Trichoderma harzianum Rifai on the biofilm formation process of microorganisms associated with urinary tract infections...

BACKGROUND: The Mycobacterium avium complex includes the commonest non-tuberculous mycobacteria associated with human infections. These infections have been associated with the production of biofilms in many cases, but there are only a few studies about biofilms produced by the species included in this group. METHODS: Three collection strains ( M. avium ATCC25291, M. intracellulare ATCC13950, and M. chimaera DSM756), three clinically significant strains (647, 657, and 655), and three clinically non-significant ones (717, 505, and 575) of each species were included...

To address intracellular mycobacterial infections, we developed a cocktail of four enzymes that catalytically attack three layers of the mycobacterial envelope. This cocktail is delivered to macrophages, through a targeted liposome presented here as ENTX_001. Endolytix Cocktail 1 (EC1) leverages mycobacteriophage lysin enzymes LysA and LysB, while also including α-amylase and isoamylase for degradation of the mycobacterial envelope from outside of the cell. The LysA family of proteins from mycobacteriophages has been shown to cleave the peptidoglycan layer, whereas LysB is an esterase that hydrolyzes the linkage between arabinogalactan and mycolic acids of the mycomembrane...

The fabrication possibility of nanocomposite film from sweet cherry tree exudate gum (SCG) was studied. To improve SCG film properties, oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, ultraviolet irradiation (UV-A and UV-C), and TiO2 nanoparticles (T-NPs) were used. Hydrogen peroxide oxidation at higher amounts decreased the water vapor permeability (WVP) and thickness and increased the mechanical properties and transparency. In comparison with the UV-A, UV irradiation of the C-type increased permeability, and elongation at break (EAB) and thickness, but reduced the tensile strength (TS), solubility, and transparency...

We report a case of chronic infection with Pasteurella multocida in the lower respiratory tract in a man with a cat. A 77-year-old man presented with recurrent hemoptysis accompanied by bronchiectasis and an opacity in the left lung on chest computed tomography. BACKGROUND: Autoantibodies against interleukin-12 (anti-interleukin-12) are often identified in patients with thymoma, but opportunistic infections develop in only some of these patients. Interleukin-12 (with subunits p40 and p35) shares a common subunit with interleukin-23 (subunits p40 and p19). In a patient with disseminated Burkholderia gladioli infection, the identification of both anti-interleukin-23 and anti-interleukin-12 prompted further investigation. METHODS: Among the patients (most of whom had thymoma) who were known to have anti-interleukin-12, we screened for autoantibodies against interleukin-23 (anti-interleukin-23)...
