The Australian National Neisseria Network (NNN) comprises reference laboratories in each state and territory that report data on antimicrobial susceptibility testing to an agreed group of antimicrobial agents for the Australian Gonococcal Surveillance Programme (AGSP). The AGSP data are presented quarterly in tabulated form, as well as in the AGSP annual report. This report presents national gonococcal antimicrobial resistance surveillance data from 1 January to 31 March 2023.

We describe a severe case of swimmer's itch in Victoria with widespread bullous eruption, which is a rare manifestation of this condition and presented a diagnostic challenge. This is the first case reported in Victoria, having been previously reported in more northern parts of Australia; with climate change trends, swimmer's itch is likely to become increasingly common in southern parts of the region.

Timor-Leste is a mountainous, half-island nation with a population of 1.3 million, which shares a land border with Indonesia and is 550 km from Darwin, Australia. Since independence in 2002, Timor-Leste has achieved significant development; however, high levels of poverty remain. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is endemic in over 100 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and in the Americas. It is transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes aegypti or Ae. albopictus mosquitoes, which are present in Timor-Leste and which contribute to annual rainy-season dengue virus (DENV) outbreaks...

Dengue virus (DENV) infection causes 390 million infections per year and 40,000 deaths globally. It is endemic in many countries in Asia, Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, and Oceania. Dengue is endemic in Timor-Leste year-round, but peak transmission occurs during the rainy season. We briefly describe the epidemiology of DENV in the Municipality of Dili between 2018 and 2022. There were 6,234 cases notified, with a mean annual incidence rate of 330 cases per 100,000 population. There were 55 deaths (case fatality rate 0...

In 2023, an increased number of urogenital and anorectal infections with Neisseria meningitis serogroup Y (MenY) were reported in New South Wales (NSW). Whole genome sequencing (WGS) found a common sequence type (ST-1466), with limited sequence diversity. Confirmed outbreak cases were NSW residents with a N. meningitidis isolate matching the cluster sequence type; probable cases were NSW residents with MenY isolated from a urogenital or anorectal site from 1 July 2023 without WGS testing. Of the 41 cases, most were men (n = 27), of whom six reported recent contact with a female sex worker...

The infection caused by Clostridioides difficile represents one of the bacterial infections with the greatest increase in incidence among nosocomial infections in recent years. C. difficile is a Gram-positive bacterium able to produce toxins and spores. In some cases, infection results in severe diarrhoea and fulminant colitis, which cause prolonged hospitalisation and can be fatal, with repercussions also in terms of health economics. C. difficile is the most common cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea in the healthcare setting...

INTRODUCTION: Emotion dysregulation is a transdiagnostic marker for vulnerability and has high comorbidity rates across various range of disorders among adolescents and young adults, highlighting the crucial need for precise assessment tools to recognize its significant impact on well-being. The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale Short Form (DERS-SF) is a comprehensive instrument designed to measure the ability to regulate emotion. This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of DERS-SF among the non-clinical population, particularly high school and university students in Indonesia...

PURPOSE: This study is to evaluate the correlation between retrobulbar perfusion deficits and glaucomatous visual field defects. METHODS: Eighty-four patients with glaucoma and 17 normal subjects serving as controls were selected. Color Doppler imaging (CDI) was used to measure the changes in blood flow parameters in the retrobulbar ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA), and short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCAs). Visual field testing was performed using a Humphrey perimeter, categorizing the visual field deficits into four stages according to the Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study (AGIS) scoring method...

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile ( C . difficile ) is a spore-forming bacterial species that ubiquitously exists in the environment. Colonization by C. difficile is highly prevalent in infants, while fewer than 5% of adults are asymptomatic carriers. Disruption of the microbiome, such as through antibiotic treatment, triggers the germination of bacterial spores into numerous vegetative cells. These cells then produce enterotoxins that result in watery diarrhea and colonic inflammation...

BACKGROUND: Because interventions are available to prevent further recurrence in patients with recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI), we identified predictors of multiple rCDI (mrCDI) in adults at the time of presentation with initial CDI (iCDI). METHODS: iCDI was defined as a positive C difficile test in any clinical setting during January 2018-August 2019 in a person aged ≥18 years with no known prior positive test. rCDI was defined as a positive test ≥14 days from the previous positive test within 180 days after iCDI; mrCDI was defined as ≥2 rCDI...

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) poses a persistent challenge in healthcare, with substantial morbidity and mortality implications. This comprehensive review explores current CDI management, emphasising guidelines from IDSA, SHEA, and ESCMID. Additionally, this study spotlights recent drug developments that have the potential to reshape CDI treatment paradigms. Within the current treatment landscape, fidaxomicin, vancomycin, bezlotoxumab, and faecal microbiota transplantation offer varied options, each with its unique strengths and limitations...

Prior studies have found that children are more likely to learn words that are frequent in the input and highly imageable. Many theories of word learning, however, predict that these variables should interact, particularly early in development: frequency of a form is of little use if you cannot infer its meaning, and a concrete word cannot be acquired if you never hear it. The present study explores this interaction, how it changes over time and its relationship to syntactic category effects in children acquiring American English...

An 80-year-old man with FLT3-TKD mutation-positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML) relapsed during consolidation therapy with venetoclax/azacitidine and was started on gilteritinib as salvage therapy. On the day after treatment initiation, febrile neutropenia was observed, but the fever resolved promptly after initiation of antimicrobial therapy. On the fifth day after completion of antimicrobial therapy, the patient experienced fever and watery diarrhea over 10 times a day, and a diagnosis of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) was made based on stool examination...

Antibiotic-induced dysbiosis is a major risk factor for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is recommended for treating CDI. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we show that Tritrichomonas musculis (T.mu), an integral member of the mouse gut commensal microbiota, reduces CDI-induced intestinal damage by inhibiting neutrophil recruitment and IL-1β secretion, while promoting Th1 cell differentiation and IFN-γ secretion, which in turn enhances goblet cell production and mucin secretion to protect the intestinal mucosa...

BACKGROUND: Since the emergence of hypervirulent strains of Clostridioides difficile , the incidence of C. difficile infections (CDI) has increased significantly. METHODS: To assess the incidence of CDI in Korea, we conducted a prospective multicentre observational study from October 2020 to October 2021. RESULTS: In the prospective study with active surveillance, 30,212 patients had diarrhoea and 907 patients were diagnosed with CDI over 1,288,571 patient-days and 193,264 admissions in 18 participating hospitals during 3 months of study period; the CDI per 10,000 patient-days was 7...
