BACKGROUND: Cardiac diseases are highly detrimental illnesses, responsible for approximately 32% of global mortality [1]. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can reduce deaths caused by cardiac diseases. In paediatric patients, it is challenging for paediatricians to identify functional murmurs and pathological murmurs from heart sounds. OBJECTIVE: The study intends to develop a novel blended ensemble model using hybrid deep learning models and softmax regression to classify adult, and paediatric heart sounds into five distinct classes, distinguishing itself as a groundbreaking work in this domain...

Phonocardiogram signal (PCG) has been the subject of several signal processing studies, where researchers applied various analysis techniques and extracted numerous features for different purposes, like cardiac pathologies identification, healthy/pathologic case discrimination, and severity assessment. When talking about cardiac severity, many think directly about the intensity or energy of the signal as the most reliable parameter. However, cardiac severity is not always reflected by the intensity or energy of the signal but includes other variables as well...

BACKGROUND: Syringomyelia (SM) and myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) are highly prevalent in Cavalier King Charles spaniels (CKCS). Cardiac status in CKCS with and without SM is currently unknown. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between SM and MMVD severity in CKCS and CKCS with SM with and without clinical signs of SM. ANIMALS: Fifty-five CKCS: 40 with SM (22 symptomatic and 18 asymptomatic) and 15 without SM. METHODS: A combined retrospective and prospective study...

Unroofed coronary sinus (UCS) represents a rare subtype of atrial septal defect (ASD), an adult congenital heart disease characterized by communication between the systemic and pulmonary circulations at the atrial level. This case report presents the unique occurrence of a large, unrepaired ASD secundum and an incidentally identified UCS type II in a 25-year-old female during a cardiac murmur assessment. The diagnosis of ASD secundum was initially made using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and was later confirmed with a transesophageal echocardiogram...

BACKGROUND: Systolic murmur suggesting the association of aortic valve (AV) stenosis or obstructive pathology in the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) usually requires preoperative echocardiographic evaluation for elective surgery. CASE: In a 63-year-old female patient undergoing elective thoracic surgery, the systolic murmur was auscultated on the right sternal border of the second intercostal space in the preoperative patient holding area. Point-of-care (POC) transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) demonstrated a systolic jet flow in the LVOT area...

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous arteriovenous fistulas (AVF), in contrast to iatrogenic or post-traumatic ones, are extremely rare and only sporadically published in the literature. In the absence of exposure risk, the diagnosis of AVF can be challenging, especially if it is an incidental finding. CASE HISTORY: An 80-year-old female patient presented to our vascular consultation because of swelling of the left leg due to varicosis. For years, she had also noticed that the right foot seemed to be cooler...

Left ventricular tumour is a rare condition in children. The causes include vegetations, thrombus, and fibroma. 2-year-old asymptomatic female presented with an innocent heart murmur at 6 months of age. Subsequent follow-ups at 18 months of age showed left ventricular mass. Surgical pathology revealed "nodular fasciitis." This type of tumour has never been described in the heart before.

Mitral and aortic valve insufficiencies have been commonly reported in horses. The objective of this study was to establish the use of acoustic cardiography (Audicor® ) in horses with aortic (AI) or mitral valve insufficiency (MI). A total of 17 healthy horses, 18 horses with AI, and 28 horses with MI were prospectively included. None of the horses was in heart failure. Echocardiography and Audicor® analyses were conducted. Electromechanical activating time (EMAT), rate-corrected EMATc, left ventricular systolic time (LVST), rate-corrected LVSTc, and intensity and persistence of the third and fourth heart sound (S3, S4) were reported by Audicor® ...

We performed a literature search to identify the details of patients with right ventricular outflow tract obstruction caused by an aneurysm of the ventricular membranous septum in a perimembranous ventricular septal defect. Thirty-one cases with a median age of 29 years (range, 1-69 years) were studied. A right ventricle-pulmonary artery systolic pressure gradient ranged from 35 to 107 mm Hg (mean 69 mm Hg). An interventricular shunt was absent in eight patients: two children and six adults. It is necessary to monitor the size of an aneurysm of the ventricular membranous septum, whether or not an interventricular shunt is present...

The asymptomatic and slow progressive nature of cardiopathies represents a risk to the welfare of avian species in human care. Diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease in birds pose a challenge due to unique anatomic and physiologic characteristics. Comprehensive cardiac assessments with diagnostic tools such as echocardiography, color-Doppler, the biomarker cardiac troponin I (cTn1), and cholesterol serum concentrations have been utilized in different bird species with varying success. Saddle-billed storks ( Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis ) have been maintained in human care for over 80 yrs and several institutions have noted heart murmurs and cardiomegaly...

This case describes an asymptomatic child with incidental identification of a supradominant right coronary artery with absent left circumflex coronary artery. The coronary variant was identified due to concern for an unexplained, dilated right coronary artery demonstrated initially during an evaluation for a functional heart murmur. Cardiac CTA provided a non-invasive diagnosis of the coronary variant. This variant is mostly thought to be benign though some have reported concern for associated exertional ischemia...

Noninvasive infrasonic hemodynography using the MindMics earbuds captures low-frequency acoustic vibrations throughout the cardiac cycle. In an n-of-1 analysis, we propose a new method of assessing severe aortic stenosis by using infrasonic hemodynography to detect its characteristic systolic ejection murmur before and after transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

Morgagni hernia is a rare congenital defect of the diaphragm, especially seen in children but rarely observed in adults. It occurs due to a congenital defect during the development of the diaphragm. Bochdalek hernia is a common congenital form of diaphragmatic hernia. Morgagni hernia is usually rare with a prevalence of approximately 2-3%. Beaver tail liver, which is also called sliver of liver, is a rare variant of liver morphology. Sometimes elongated left lobe of the liver can extend laterally across the midline to contact and often surround the spleen...

A 45-days-old mixed-breed female cat was referred to a veterinary specialty hospital for evaluation due to poor general condition, dyspnea of possible cardiac origin, and a heart murmur. The results of the physical examination, thoracic radiography, and echocardiography led to a diagnosis of hypotrophy of the right ventricle, tricuspid atresia, and atrial septal defect. Cardiovascular pathological findings confirmed the clinical diagnosis in addition to the observation of a ventricular septal defect. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of tricuspid atresia with atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect in a cat...

Cardiovascular disease, particularly Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), is one of the leading causes of death in many developing countries. RHD is manageable and treatable with early detection. However, multiple countries across the globe suffer from a scarcity of experienced physicians who can perform screening at large scales. Advancements in machine learning and signal processing have paved way for Phonocardiogram (PCG)-based automatic heart sound classification. The direct implication of such methods is that it is possible to enable a person without specialized training to detect potential cardiac conditions with just a digital stethoscope...
