BACKGROUND: Peer-assisted learning (PAL) - where students take up a teaching role at an early stage of their training-is widely used in medical curricula. Many qualitative studies have investigated the perceptions and benefits of PAL, but no studies have longitudinally explored how peer teachers experienced their development. This could allow for a better understanding of PAL. In this study, we explored the perceived impact of being a peer teacher on the development of personal and professional competencies as a medical student...

We present the comparison of a field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA) based digital servo module with an analog counterpart for the purpose of laser frequency stabilization to a high-finesse optical cavity. The transfer functions of both the digital and analog modules for proportional-integral-derivative control are measured. For the lasers stabilized to the cavity, we measure the singe-sideband power spectral density of fast phase noise by means of an optical beat with filtered light transmitted through the cavity...

Verticillium wilt of cotton is a very serious soil-borne disease and there is no effective control method. The mechanism of Gossypium hirsutum thaumatin-like protein 1(GhTLP1) in upland cotton regulating Verticillium wilt resistance has been an uncovered research approach. GhTLP1 is mainly localized in the cell wall. Overexpression of GhTLP1 significantly enhanced Arabidopsis plants resistance to Verticillium dahliae, while its homologous mutant tlp1 in Arabidopsis was more susceptible to the pathogen, and the heterologous complement line (EC) recovered resistance to V...

PURPOSE: To revise the 2009 Canadian Geriatrics Society (CGS) Core Competencies in the Care of Older Persons for Canadian Medical Students by applying current frameworks and using a modified Delphi process. METHOD: The working group chose the Geriatric 5Ms model and CanMEDS framework to develop and structure the competencies. National (i.e., Canadian) Delphi participants were recruited, and 3 Delphi survey rounds were conducted from 2019-2021. Each survey round collected quantitative data using a 7-point Likert scale (LS) and qualitative data using free-text comments...

BACKGROUND: Nursing competency frameworks describe the competencies; knowledge, skills and attitudes nurses should possess. Countries have their own framework. Knowledge of the content of professional competency frameworks in different countries can enhance the development of these frameworks and international collaborations. OBJECTIVE: This study examines how competencies and task divisions are described in the current professional competency frameworks for registered nurses (RNs with a Bachelor's degree) in the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom (UK), Canada and the United States (US)...

Bicupin domain protein (BCD) family, an important component of Cupin domain superfamily, plays important roles in oxalic acid (OA) degradation and stress responses in high plants. However, no studies have been reported on the Cupin domain family in cotton up till now. In our study, a total 110 proteins including Cupin domain were identified from the upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). Among them, 17 proteins contained Bicupin domain. Subsequently, we found that V. dahliae produces OA leading to cotton leaf wilting...

Clinical embryologists are responsible for the handling, evaluation, and care of human gametes and preimplantation embryos within the context of an assisted reproductive technology laboratory. They are integral members of a team of professionals who provide care for fertility patients. Despite the increasing recognition of clinical embryologists as professionals, training requirements, continuing professional development, and appropriate credentialing have lagged in several countries. In many cases, individuals enter the profession with training limited to technical aspects provided by individual laboratory directors through an apprenticeship model...

The immunogenomic features of tumor-adjacent lungs (TALs) in stage I lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) are not clear. Multiomics analyses of tumor tissues and paired TALs from 59 stage I LUSC patients were performed. Compared to tumors, TALs exhibited a better-preserved immune contexture indicated by upregulation of immune pathways, increased immune infiltration, and higher expression of immune effector molecules. Notably, TALs had no mutations in PTEN and KEAP1, a lower incidence of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) loss and higher expression of HLA class I genes, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) I chaperones, and interferon (IFN)-γ-associated genes...

Psychiatric practice faces many challenges in the first quarter of 21st century. Society has transformed, as have training requirements and patient expectations, underlining an urgent need to look at educational programmes. Meanwhile, awareness has grown around psychiatric disorders and there are evolving workforce trends, with more women going to medical school and specialising in psychiatry.
