Schistosomes are responsible for the parasitic disease schistosomiasis, an acute and chronic parasitic ailment that affects more than 240 million people in 70 countries worldwide. It is the second most devastating parasitic disease after malaria. At least 200,000 deaths per year are associated with the disease. In the absence of the availability of vaccines, chemotherapy is the main stay for combating schistosomiasis. The antischistosomal arsenal is currently limited to a single drug, Praziquantel, which is quite effective with a single-day treatment and virtually no host-toxicity...

Kounis syndrome (KS) is defined as concurrent acute coronary syndrome and allergic or hypersensitivity reactions. Despite being increasingly reported, it is still an underdiagnosed entity. Several medications are already known to result in KS. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is a frequently used antibiotic, and its use has been linked with KS. The aim of the present report was to draw attention to rare clinical manifestation of KS following peroral amoxicillin/clavulanate use.

Anaphylactic insults that cause cardiovascular signs and symptoms have been defined as Kounis syndrome, which has been associated with specific triggered anaphylactic reactions. Kounis syndrome has not been described in patients with no evidence of coronary artery disease (type I Kounis) in a scenario of idiopathic anaphylaxis. We reported a case of a 65-year-old white woman with no evidence of coronary artery disease who experienced two myocardial infarctions on separate occasions attributable to idiopathic anaphylaxis...

BACKGROUND: Kounis syndrome corresponds to the occurrence of myocardial injury following an allergic insult. This syndrome is infrequent, and is not well known. In consequence, it is usually misdiagnosed leading to inappropriate treatment. The current literature is limited to case studies and there are no international recommendations concerning this topic. CASE PRESENTATION: We discussed, through two case reports, the clinical presentation and the management of a 60-year-old North African man and a 45-year-old North African man presenting with chest pain suggesting acute coronary syndrome following anaphylactic reaction...

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty with coronary stent implantation is a life-saving medical procedure that has become, nowadays, the most frequent performed therapeutic procedure in medicine. Plain balloon angioplasty, bare metal stents, first and second generation drug-eluting stents, bioresorbable and bioabsorbable scaffolds have offered diachronically a great advance against coronary artery disease and have enriched our medical armamentarium. Stented areas constitute vulnerable sites for endothelial damage, endothelial dysfunction, flow turbulence, hemorheologic changes, platelet dysfunction, coagulation changes and fibrinolytic disturbances...

Kounis syndrome (KS) is the coincidental occurrence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and anaphylactic or allergic insult. It results from mast cell degranulation with subsequent release of numerous inflammatory mediators, leading to coronary vasospasm or atheromatous plaque rupture. Diagnosis is clinical and based on the temporal relationship between the two events. Despite the growing number of reported cases, especially in southern Europe, the lack of awareness of this association may lead to under-reporting in Portugal...

OBJECTIVE: Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) is endemic in central Tunisia and is more prevalent in rural agricultural areas. The aim of this work was to determine ZCL prevalence among farmers and to test their availability to take ownership of the problem and participate actively to fight and address the disease. METHODS: A sample of farmers from Sidi Bouzid, central Tunisia, was selected randomly. Farmers were interviewed using a standardized questionnaire about ZCL lesion occurrence, its date of onset among family members, and the farmers' availability to contribute to fighting this disease...

Kounis syndrome is the concurrence of coronary spasm, acute myocardial infarction or stent thrombosis, with allergic reactions in the setting of mast-cell and platelet activation. In this report Kounis syndrome manifesting as stent thrombosis with left ventricular thrombus formation was triggered by a food-induced allergic reaction. The allergic reaction to food was confirmed by oral rice pudding ingredients challenge test while skin tests were inconclusive. To our knowledge, this is first report of early stent thrombosis secondary to food allergic reaction in a 70-year-old man patient who was found to have left ventricular thrombus and undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy...

Kounis syndrome is defined as the coincidental occurrence of an acute coronary syndrome with hypersensitivity reactions following an allergic event. The three reported variants of Kounis syndrome are vasospastic allergic angina, allergic myocardial infarction and stent thrombosis with occluding thrombus. The syndrome is caused by various inflammatory mediators. The pathophysiological characteristics of Kounis syndrome involve coronary artery spasm and/or atheromatous plaque erosion or rupture during an allergic reaction...
