INTRODUCTION: Sterilization at caesarean section is usually performed by the modified Pomeroy's technique. Application of Falope rings and Filshie clips may also be used for tubal sterilization at caesarean section, and these techniques are also used during laparoscopy or minilaparotomy. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the study was to evaluate the failure rates, complications, technical difficulties and reversibility of the Falope ring application for tubal sterilization as compared to the traditional modified Pomeroy's technique used during caesarean sections...

BACKGROUND: This is an update of a review that was first published in 2002. Female sterilisation is the most popular contraceptive method worldwide. Several techniques exist for interrupting the patency of fallopian tubes, including cutting and tying the tubes, damaging the tube using electric current, applying clips or silicone rubber rings, and blocking the tubes with chemicals or tubal inserts. OBJECTIVES: To compare the different tubal occlusion techniques in terms of major and minor morbidity, failure rates (pregnancies), technical failures and difficulties, and women's and surgeons' satisfaction...

INTRODUCTION: Tubal occlusion is a common form of contraception. Filshie clips have been widely used for tubal occlusion since their introduction. Reports of Filshie clip migration are rare. We describe what we believe to be the first reported case of a patient with multiple groin hernias associated with migration of a Filshie clip. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of 56-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with a tender right groin lump. She had undergone a right-sided inguinal hernia repair 3 years earlier...

OBJECTIVE: To analyze data on sterilization and refertilization procedures that took place at Orbis Medical Center in Sittard, a hospital in the south of the Netherlands. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of surgical tubal sterilizations performed on 966 patients for contraception between 2002 and 2011, and of 19 patients who underwent refertilization between 2002 and 2012. The main outcome measures were complications and failure rates of sterilization, motives for refertilization and pregnancy rates after refertilization...

We report two cases of robot-assisted coelioscopic proximal tubal reanastomosis after proximal tubal ligature. Patients were aged 43 and 34 years respectively and had previously undergone proximal tubal ligation by coagulation section at 37 years of age for the first patient, and by Filshie clip at 24 years for the second one. Both had regular menstrual cycles and their ovarian reserve was good. Their partners were presenting with normal sperm criteria. Proximal tubal reanastomosis was carried out in September 2010 by robotic coelioscopy with five extramucous vicryl 5-0 stitches on each tube and positive blue testing...

OBJECTIVES: The modified Pomeroy procedure is currently the most widely used method for postpartum sterilisation. Alternative options are Filshie clips, Hulka-Clemens clips and Falope rings. In this systematic review we pooled the available evidence in order to compare the failure rates, complications, technical difficulties, and reversibility of the Pomeroy method and Filshie clips when resorted to for postpartum sterilisation. METHODS: We gathered data from MEDLINE, EMBASE (1970-2010), the Cochrane database, and reference lists of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pregnancy rates of microtubal reanastomosis (MTR) and any associated clinical variables, to determine pregnancy rates and live birth rates of MTR as compared to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and to study the rates of ectopic pregnancy and spontaneous abortion (SAB) after MTR. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. RESULTS: At our institution, the pregnancy rate in the first 12 months following MTR was 44.3%. The study also showed that 2 clinical variables of the MTR procedure that had higher pregnancy rates were when Hulka clips (Hulka-Clemens, Richard Wolf, Rosemont, Illinois) or Filshie clips (Coopersurgical, Lake Forest, California) were used as the mechanism of tubal occlusion and if bilateral MTR was performed instead of unilateral...

INTRODUCTION: Women with previous tubal sterilisation seeking fertility are faced with treatment options of reconstructive tubal surgery or in vitro fertilisation (IVF) techniques. The aim was to assess the current viability of tubal anastomosis in a local clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort review of all sterilisation reversal cases from January 1998 to January 2008. The main outcome measures included fi rst pregnancy success and live birth after surgery...

OBJECTIVE: To observe the incidence of menstrual symptoms and relevant surgery after sterilisation. STUDY DESIGN: 1101 women sterilised with Filshie clips between 1983 and 2002 were assessed prospectively comparing menstrual symptomatology documented immediately before surgery and 5-14 years later by questionnaire. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Prevalence of menstrual dysfunction and subsequent surgery related to pre-operative menstrual symptoms and contraception...

We report the case of a patient presenting with a chronic groin sinus secondary to a tubal ligation clip migration (Filshie clip) 21 years after the laparoscopic sterilisation took place. Our case report adds to the small number of cases describing tubal clip migration with resultant local sepsis. Although this is a rare complication, it should be borne in mind for women who have undergone tubal clip ligation and present with recurrent or chronic groin, perineal or peri-anal sepsis.

There were 290 sterilisations performed at the time of Caesarean section over the period of 1994-2007. Studied population included 203 Pomeroy procedures and 87 Filshie clips applications. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the failure, regret, and reversal rates 5 or more years after laparoscopic Filshie clip sterilization using local anesthesia. METHODS: A total of 1,101 women underwent Filshie clip sterilization between 1983 and 2002. They completed follow-up questionnaires that were analyzed for the following outcomes: failed sterilization, regret after the operation, and sterilization reversal. RESULTS: Two hundred thirty-three of 968 (24%) eligible women sent the questionnaire had moved from their last known address...

The Filshie method is a tubal occlusion method commonly used to prevent pregnancy. In medical negligence cases where it is suspected that closure of a Filshie clip may be faulty, lawyers may call on expert surgeons to assess whether or not a clip is closed on the basis of visual examination of the X-rays. However, it is not uncommon for experts to disagree. The aim of this work was to reduce the uncertainty in determining whether or not Filshie clips had been correctly closed. An estimate of the error in the estimate of the clip height was made by propagating measurement errors through a mathematical model...

OBJECTIVE: A case series is presented to illustrate the dilemma in management of women with Chronic Pelvic Pain (CPP) additional to a tubal sterilization. METHODS: Between January 1999 and June 2007, five women consulted the Department of Gynecology for CPP additional to tubal sterilization with Filshie Clips (FCs). A biopsychosocial approach of the complaint was offered and laparoscopic removal of the clips was performed in all cases. The effectiveness of this management was assessed by a personal interview and a retrospective chart review...
