BACKGROUND: A chronic autoimmune disease with an increasing incidence rate, type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is typified by the degeneration of the pancreatic beta cells. Diabetes management is significantly impacted by nutrition. Although it has been demonstrated that following the Mediterranean diet (MD) improves metabolic control with type 2 diabetes in children and adults, its effects on children with T1DM have not received much attention. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess whether adherence to Mediterranean diet is associated with better metabolic control and body composition in youths with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus...

BACKGROUND: Self-care refers to the ability that an individual has or develops to regulate the functioning of the body. Health status and age are factors associated with dependency on, and the need for, someone else to take over self-care. In the present case, there was a self-care deficit. Cystic fibrosis is a chronic disease that occurs in one in 10,000 live births in Brazil, and the affected population in the country is predominantly pediatric (approximately 73%). Support from nursing teams is necessary to improve patients' skills until they can take full responsibility for their self-care...

Infantile hemangiomas are the most common birthmark in newborns. They are clinically diagnosed and usually self-limited. However, there are several exceptions with aggressive types of hemangiomas that can be associated with extracutaneous anomalies, such as PHACE syndrome (posterior fossa anomalies, upper body hemangiomas, arterial anomalies, cardiac anomalies, and eye anomalies) and LUMBAR syndrome (lower body hemangiomas, ulcerations/urogenital anomalies, myelopathies, bony deformities, anorectal malformations/arterial anomalies, and renal anomalies)...

A 22-month-old girl of consanguineous parents was admitted with a high-grade fever. She was found to have insensitivity to painful stimuli and an absence of perspiration. She also displayed self-mutilating behaviour and was insensitive to cold/hot water on her body. On examination, there was loss of the tip of the tongue, missing teeth, generalised xerosis, and several ulcers at sites of minor trauma. She also had dysplastic nails and digital ulcers. Sensory examination demonstrated a complete lack of awareness of pain and temperature, vibration and fine touch were intact and lacrimation was normal...

Diabetes is a devastating public health problem. Prediabetes is an intermediate stage in the disease processes leading to diabetes, including types 1 and 2 diabetes. In the article "Prediabetes in children and adolescents: An updated review," the authors presented current evidence. We simplify and systematically clearly present the evidence and rationale for a conceptual framework we term the '3ASs': (1) Awareness Sensible; (2) Algorithm Simple; and (3) Appealing Strategies. Policy makers and the public need to be alerted...

Foreign body aspirations and esophageal foreign bodies are lifethreatening conditions. Sometimes they or their complications can cause severe morbidity and even mortality. Their exact incidence is unknown. Foreign body aspirations and esophageal foreign bodies are most commonly observed in the pediatric age group. While interventions are generally required for the removal of respiratory tract foreign bodies, the majority of esophageal foreign bodies come out spontaneously. Removal of foreign bodies that block the lumen of the organ to a great extent, react with the mucosa such as battery magnets, and can cause poisoning, sharp-edged objects, and swellable foreign bodies such as legumes, should be done acutely...

INTRODUCTION: Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is very rare among children. We are aware of no reports of patients with SC accompanied by leg length discrepancy (LLD). CASE REPORT: We describe a case of synovial osteochondromatosis of a 7-year-old boy complicated by LLD. We performed epiphysiodesis of the distal femur and arthroscopic resection of loose bodies and total synovectomy. Three years after surgery, LLD had been corrected and there was no sign of recurrence...

Pediatric vehicular hyperthermia (PVH) has aroused wide public concern recently. High temperatures in closed vehicles with full sun exposure and no ventilation in summer seriously endanger children's lives. Aiming at this practical problem, this study first took the temperature of child's core body as a standard, and divided the hyperthermia into three stages: un-compensable heating (Tc > 37ºC), heat stroke (Tc > 40ºC) and critical thermal maximum (Tc > 42ºC). On this basis, two weeks of outdoor parking experiments during 10:00-18:00, using an equivalent size dummy were conducted to explore the influence of ambient temperature and solar irradiation on cabin temperature, humidity, and child's core body temperature...

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) involves deliberately causing harm to one's body without the intention of suicide. As the numbers of adolescents presenting NSSI have been steadily increasing during the last years, we intended to investigate adolescent patients exhibiting NSSI, admitted to our clinic-a Romanian child psychiatry inpatient clinic, over the course of five years. A total of 100 adolescents (80 females, 20 males, mean age: 14.9 years) hospitalized for various neuropsychiatric disorders and engaging in self-harm were studied...

Background. Stunting remains a major public health issue in developing countries like Ethiopia. It is termed as a chronic malnutrition which leads to morbidity and mortality among children. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with stunting among 6 to 59 months children in Ethiopia. Methods. A total weighted sample of 34 930 children aged 6 to 59 months was included in this study. A Multilevel Mixed-Effect logistic regression was carried out. The Median Odds Ratio (MOR) and the Intra class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) were calculated...

We report a case of a 29-year-old woman with subtle partial erythematous, partial hyperpigmented streaks along the Blaschko's lines on the right side of the body since early childhood. Primary DNA results of the skin and blood assay diagnosed focal dermal hypoplasia in mosaic form. The postzygotic mutation in the PORCN gene was only detectable in the affected skin and not in the blood assay. This article illustrates that clinically very discrete hypopigmentation and poikiloderma along Blaschko lines should raise awareness for robust diagnostic analysis in order to recognize this variable multisystem disease and to ensure an appropriate search for extracutaneous abnormalities and human genetic counseling, ideally before pregnancy...

Self-medication, the practice of using medications without a valid prescription based on self-diagnosed symptoms, has become a global phenomenon, with a significant presence in developing nations like India. This inclination often arises from the desire to reduce healthcare costs and save time, though it carries inherent risks, including serious adverse effects and the potential masking of chronic disease symptoms. In India, the prevalence of self-medication varies widely, with factors such as media-driven advertisements, positive attitudes, and financial constraints contributing to its adoption, especially among lower- and middle-income families...

Background Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease characterized by the typical appearance of red, thickened, scaly patches on the skin (plaques). These plaques can vary in size and distribution from person to person. In some individuals, it may affect small areas of skin, while in others, large areas covering their body may be involved. Patients with psoriasis might be identified by pediatricians before being seen by dermatologists, highlighting the need for pediatricians to be aware and knowledgeable about pediatric psoriasis...

In recent years, there has been increased awareness of obesity as a condition that carries a high level of stigma, as well as growing recognition of its prevalence and harm. Despite the increasing body of research on this topic, there is a gap in the literature regarding mechanisms that generate or exacerbate perceptions of weight stigma, especially within families and pediatric healthcare settings. The present study aims to identify potential stigma-generating mechanisms by focusing on inter-relational dynamics within these contexts...
