Alkaline salt stress adversely affects rice growth, productivity and grain quality. However, the mechanism underlying this process remains elusive. We characterized here an alkaline tolerant mutant, alt1 in rice. Map-based cloning revealed that alt1 harbors a mutation in a chromatin remodeling ATPase gene. ALT1-RNAi transgenic plants under different genetic background mimicked the alt1 phenotype, exhibiting tolerance to alkaline stress in a transcript dosage-dependent manner. Microtubules and microtubule-associated proteins are fundamental for multiple cellular processes, including mitosis and intracellular motility, but the factors that control microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) are poorly understood. Here we show that two MAPs-the CLIP-170 homologue Bik1p and the Lis1 homologue Pac1p-interact with several proteins in the sumoylation pathway. Posttranslational protein modification with small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO) is an important regulatory mechanism implicated in many cellular processes, including several of biomedical relevance. We report that inhibition of the proteasome leads to accumulation of proteins that are simultaneously conjugated to both SUMO and ubiquitin in yeast and in human cells. Cytogenetic, molecular genetic and functional analyses have implicated chromosome 3 genes in epithelial ovarian cancers (EOC). To further characterize their contribution to EOC, the Affymetrix U133A GeneChip(R) was used to perform transcriptome analyses of chromosome 3 genes in primary cultures of normal ovarian surface epithelial (NOSE) cells (n = 14), malignant serous epithelial ovarian tumors (TOV) (n = 17), and four EOC cell lines (TOV-81D, TOV-112D, TOV-21G, and OV-90).
