Stenosing laryngotracheitis (SLT) affecting the children is considered to be an emergency pediatric condition associated with ENT pathology. Its treatment presents a serious challenge for otolaryngologists, pediatricians, specialists in communicable diseases, allergologists, etc. We have undertaken a retrospective analysis of the available data with a view to summarizing the tendencies in the evolution of SLT morbidity. The results of the 35 year-long experience with the use of the currently available therapeutic strategies for the treatment of the children suffering from stenosing laryngotracheitis are presented...

The search for new, effective and safe antimicrobial compounds from plant sources has continued to play an important role in the maintenance of human health since ancient times. Such compounds can be used to help to eradicate microorganisms from the root canal system, preventing/healing periapical diseases. Mikania glomerata (Spreng.), commonly known as "guaco," is a native climbing plant from Brazil that displays a wide range of pharmacological properties. Many of its activities have been attributed to its phytochemical composition, which is mainly composed of diterpenes, such as ent-kaurenoic acid (KA)...

BACKGROUND: Kamebakaurin (KA) is an ent-kaurane diterpenoid known to have anti-inflammatory potential. In the current study, we investigated whether pretreatment with KA could ameliorate acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatotoxicity by inhibiting the anti-inflammatory response in mice. METHODS: Seven-week-old C57BL/6J mice were orally administered KA or olive oil emulsion for seven days. Twenty-four hours after the last KA or olive oil administration, the mice were intraperitoneally injected with 400mg/kg APAP or saline under feed deprived condition...

A 23-year-old woman presented to the emergency department (ED) with a sensation of a 'fish bone' stuck in her throat after eating cod. On physical examination, while she reported an uncomfortable sensation in her throat, no airway compromise was evident. Clinical examination, including ear, nose and throat (ENT) and oropharyngeal assessment, was unremarkable. A linear opacity consistent with a fishbone was visualised on a soft tissue lateral neck X-ray anterior to the vertebral body of C4-6. One attempt to visualise the fishbone on direct laryngoscopy failed in the ED...

We report the first longitudinal-transverse separation of the deeply virtual exclusive π^{0} electroproduction cross section off the neutron and coherent deuteron. The corresponding four structure functions dσ_{L}/dt, dσ_{T}/dt, dσ_{LT}/dt, and dσ_{TT}/dt are extracted as a function of the momentum transfer to the recoil system at Q^{2}=1.75  GeV^{2} and x_{B}=0.36. The ed→edπ^{0} cross sections are found compatible with the small values expected from theoretical models. The en→enπ^{0} cross sections show a dominance from the response to transversely polarized photons, and are in good agreement with calculations based on the transversity generalized parton distributions of the nucleon...

Chiral amino alcohol-copper(ii) catalysts Cu-L1c and Cu-ent-L1c were utilized to promote the diastereoselective nitroaldol reactions of chiral aldehydes (S)-3 or (R)-3 with nitromethane, which respectively led to the preferential formation of certain stereoisomer for nitro diol derivatives 4. Using this catalytic protocol, all the four stereoisomers of the antidepressant reboxetine were divergently prepared. The highest overall yield of this synthetic route reached up to 30.5% from aldehyde (S)-3.

In the first part of this chapter, we summarize the various pharmacophore models for σ1 receptor ligands. Common to all of them is a basic amine flanked by two hydrophobic regions, representing the pharmacophoric elements. The development of computer-based models like the 3D homology model is described as well as the first crystal structure of the σ1 receptor. The second part focuses on the synthesis and biological properties of different σ1 receptor ligands, identified as 1-9. Monocyclic piperazines 1 and bicyclic piperazines 2 and 3 were developed as cytotoxic compounds, thus the IC50 values of cell growth and survival inhibition studies are given for all derivatives...

Molecular component-resolved diagnostics (CRD) are, in addition to its research applications, being increasingly used in daily allergological routine. CRD offers improved diagnostic accuracy via a better understanding of the underlying allergen causing symptoms and helps to distinguish between true sensitization and cross reactions in polysensitized patients, thereby providing an approach for individual personalized therapy. Particularly in food allergies and anaphylaxis, CRD can stratify risks for the recurrence of reactions and their severity...

The reaction of C6F5H and H2C=CHSiMe3 with catalytic [iPr2Im]Ni(η2-H2C=CHSiMe3)2 (1b) forms the C-H silylation product C6F5SiMe3 exclusively, with ethylene as a byproduct ([iPr2Im] = 1,3-di(isopropyl)imidazole-2-ylidene). Catalytic C-H bond silylation is facile with partially fluorinated aromatic substrates containing two ortho fluorine substitu-ents adjacent to the C-H bond and 1,2,3,4-tetrafluorobenzene, with the less fluorinated substrates reacting slower. Under the same reaction conditions, catalytic [IPr]Ni(η2-H2C=CHSiMe3)2 (1a) ([IPr] = 1,3-bis[2,6-diisopropylphenyl]-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazol-2-ylidene), provided only the alkene hydroarylation product C6F5CH2CH2SiMe3...

This study investigated the Ni-removal efficiency of phytohormone-producing endophytic fungi Penicillium janthinellum, Paecilomyces formosus, Exophiala sp., and Preussia sp. Among four different endophytes, P. formosus LHL10 was able to tolerate up to 1 mM Ni in contaminated media as compared to copper and cadmium. P. formosus LHL10 was further assessed for its potential to enhance the phytoremediation of Glycine max (soybean) in response to dose-dependent increases in soil Ni (0.5, 1.0, and 5.0 mM). Inoculation with P...

Odontogenic tumours are a group of heterogeneous diseases that range from hamartomatous or non-neoplastic tissue proliferations to benign neoplasms to malignant tumours with metastatic potential. They are rare, comprising about <2-3% of all oral and maxillofacial biopsy specimens. The aim of the present study was to determine the clinico-pathological presentation of this heterogeneous group of lesions and review of literature. The present study was conducted in the ENT department of a Government Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal, India, over the period of 5 years from January 2011 to December 2015...

Numerous laws, guidelines and recommendations govern the handling and reprocessing of semi-critical medical devices in the field of ENT. Although mechanically reprocessing is characterized as a preferential, manual reprocessing is still conducted in most ENT clinics and medical practices for reasons of cost and practicability. In the presented study, we developed an optimized hygienic concept for reprocessing of medical products in the field of ENT.A demand analysis of rigid endoscopes and of ENT equipment was carried out based on hypothesis that only mechanical reprocessing was performed for the entire instrumentation...
