RESEARCH QUESTION: What clinical factors are associated with 'unexpected' poor or suboptimal responses to IVF ovarian stimulation per POSEIDON's criteria, and which AMH and AFC threshold values distinguish this population? DESIGN: Tri-centre retrospective cohort study (2015-2017) involving first-time IVF and ICSI cycles with conventional ovarian stimulation (≥150 IU/day of FSH). Eligibility criteria included sufficient ovarian reserve markers according to POSEIDON's classification (AMH ≥1...

As awareness of BPA's health risks has increased, many countries and regions have implemented strict controls on its use. Consequently, bisphenol analogues like BPF and BPAF are being increasingly used as substitutes. However, these compounds are also becoming increasingly prevalent in the environment due to production, use and disposal processes. The oceans act as a repository for various pollutants, and recent studies have revealed the extensive presence of bisphenols (BPs, including BPA, BPF, BPAF, etc.) in the marine environment, posing numerous health hazards to marine wildlife...

To investigate the impact on the ovarian reserve after minimally invasive ovarian cystectomy using two platforms, the Da Vinci robotic system (Xi and SP) and the laparoscopic system. Patients underwent laparoscopic or Da Vinci robotic (Xi or SP) ovarian cystectomy for benign ovarian cysts between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022 at Guro Hospital, Korea University Medical center. We measured the change of AMH values (%) = [(postAMH - preAMH)] × 100/preAMH. No significant differences in preoperative age, cyst size, estimated blood loss during surgery, hemoglobin drop, length of hospital stay, adhesion detachment rate and cyst rupture rate were observed...

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine and metabolic disorder in women of reproductive age. It has a strong hereditary component estimated at 60 to 70% in daughters. It has been suggested that environmental factors during the fetal period may be involved in the development of the syndrome in adulthood. However, the underlying mechanisms of its transmission remain unknown, thus limiting the development of effective therapeutic strategies. This article highlights how an altered fetal environment (prenatal exposure to high levels of anti-Müllerian hormone) can contribute to the onset of PCOS in adulthood and lead to the transgenerational transmission of neuroendocrine and metabolic traits through alterations in the DNA methylation process...

As more premenopausal patients undergo fertility preserving cancer treatments, there is an increased need for fertility counseling and ovarian sparing strategies. Many patients receive gonadotoxic chemotherapeutic agents which can put them at risk of primary ovarian insufficiency or profoundly diminished ovarian reserve. Traditionally, estradiol and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) values have been used to evaluate ovarian function but more recently, reproductive endocrinologists have been proponents of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) as a validated measure of ovarian potential...

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a technique that directly injects a single sperm into the cytoplasm of mature oocytes. Here, we explored the safety of single-sperm cryopreservation applied in ICSI. This retrospective study enrolled 186 couples undergoing ICSI-assisted pregnancy. Subjects were allocated to the fresh sperm (group A)/single-sperm cryopreservation (group B) groups based on sperm type, with their clinical baseline/pathological data documented. We used ICSI-compliant sperm for subsequent in vitro fertilization and followed up on all subjects...

BACKGROUND: Resveratrol is a natural polyphenolic compound present in plants and red wine with many potential health benefits. This compound has various anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties and can improve cellular mitochondrial activity. This trial was designed to evaluate the effect on the outcome of IVF of Resveratrol supplementation in women > 35 years with good ovarian reserve (AMH > 1.2 ng/ml). Women were randomized to receive or placebo or Resveratrol (150 mg per day) for three months preceding the ovarian stimulation (OS)...

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder with effective pharmacological treatments that improve symptoms and reduce complications. NICE guidelines recommend primary care practitioners prescribe medication for adult ADHD under shared care agreements with adult mental health services (AMHS). BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) treatment decreases fertility capacity, but unnecessary fertility preservation procedures in women who would not be infertile after treatment would be a waste of time and resources and could cause the unwarranted exposure of cancer cells to exogenous sex hormones. It has been largely shown that post-treatment ovarian reserve is directly associated with pre-treatment anti-mullerian hormone levels (AMH0). A threshold for AMH0, or a model including AMH0 and patient characteristics that could distinguish the patients who will be infertile after treatments, still needs to be defined...

Most TGFβ family ligands exist as procomplexes consisting of a prodomain noncovalently bound to a growth factor (GF); Whereas some prodomains confer latency, the Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) prodomain maintains a remarkably high affinity for the GF yet remains active. Using single particle EM methods, we show the AMH prodomain consists of two subdomains: a vestigial TGFβ prodomain-like fold and a novel, helical bundle GF-binding domain, the result of an exon insertion 450 million years ago, that engages both receptor epitopes...

The genetic contributions of Neanderthals to the modern human genome have been evidenced by the comparison of present-day human genomes with paleogenomes. Neanderthal signatures in extant human genomes are attributed to intercrosses between Neanderthals and archaic anatomically modern humans (AMHs). Although Neanderthal signatures are well documented in the nuclear genome, it has been proposed that there is no contribution of Neanderthal mitochondrial DNA to contemporary human genomes. Here we show that modern human mitochondrial genomes contain 66 potential Neanderthal signatures, or Neanderthal single nucleotide variants (N-SNVs), of which 36 lie in coding regions and 7 result in nonsynonymous changes...
