Oral premalignant disorders (OPMDs) are a group of potentially malignant conditions that pose a significant health burden globally. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small non-coding RNA molecules, have emerged as crucial regulators of gene expression and have been implicated in various biological processes, including carcinogenesis. This review synthesizes existing knowledge to provide a comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying OPMDs and to highlight the potential of miRNAs as promising biomarkers and therapeutic targets...

Oral leiomyomatous hamartoma (OLH) is a rare lesion, with only 40 cases reported in the literature. It typically presents early in life as a nodule on the anterior maxillary alveolar tissues or the tongue. Its growth potential is limited, with few cases reaching dimensions >2.0 cm, and its microscopic composition includes an intact surface mucosa with an underlying fibrovascular stroma possessing an unencapsulated proliferation of smooth muscle fascicles. Excision is considered the definitive treatment. Here we describe the clinical, microscopic, histochemical, and immunohistochemical features and management of 3 cases of OLH and review the literature...

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is an oral mucosa lesion with a high rate of malignant transformation. The diagnosis is often difficult, especially when the initial lesion is a simple homogeneous white leukoplakia, and when located only on the gingiva or palate. Moreover, the anatomopathological analysis is non-specific in the initial stages. The gingival PVL localisation (gPVL) is described as the most aggressive form with the highest rate of malignant transformation. Cases with a unique gingival localisation are rare, described with a "ring around the collar" clinical form...

The accumulation of dental plaque is a precursor to various dental infections, including lesions, inflammation around dental implants, and inflammation under dentures. Traditional cleaning methods involving physical removal and chemical agents often fall short of eliminating bacteria and their protective biofilms. These methods can also inadvertently lead to bacteria that resist drugs and upset the mouth's microbial harmony. To counter these issues, a new approach is needed that can target and clear away dental plaque, minimize biofilms and bacteria, and thus support sustained dental health...

Compelling evidence indicates that dyslipidemia is positively associated with oral lichen planus (OLP). The types and magnitude of lipid metabolism disturbance in peripheral blood of OLP patients have been investigated in different studies. Yet, consensus on how these different lipid components varied in levels for the development of OLP lesions has not been reached so far. Herein, a total of 8 eligible studies were recognized, which enrolled 533 cases of OLP and 499 healthy controls. The analysis showed that the average total triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were considerably higher, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were significantly lower in OLP patients compared to healthy controls...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a precancerous lesion in the oral cavity, commonly results from the Areca nut chewing habit. Arecoline, the main component of Areca nut, is known to stimulate the activation of myofibroblasts, which can lead to abnormal collagen I deposition. Meanwhile, Resveratrol is a non-flavonoid phenolic substance that can be naturally obtained from various berries and foods. Given that resveratrol has significant anti-fibrosis traits in other organs, but little is known about its effect on OSF, this study aimed to investigate the therapeutic impact of resveratrol on OSF and its underlying mechanism...

Peri-implantitis and periodontitis are common oral inflammatory diseases, which seem to exhibit critical differences in some of their molecular features. Thus, we assessed the immune cell composition of peri-implantitis and periodontitis lesions and the corresponding inflammatory profile in soft tissues and crevicular fluid. Peri-implantitis, periodontitis and control patients were recruited (n=62), and soft tissue biopsies were collected during surgery. Crevicular fluid around implant or tooth was collected...

INTRODUCTION: The fields of medicine and dentistry are beginning to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) in diagnostics. This may reduce subjectivity and improve the accuracy of diagnoses and treatment planning. Current evidence on pathosis detection on Pantomographs(PGs) indicates the presence or absence of disease in the entire radiographic image, with little evidence of the relation of periapical pathosis to the causative tooth. OBJECTIVE: To develop a Deep Learning (DL) AI model for the segmentation of periapical pathosis and its relation to teeth on PGs...

However, an increased incidence of renal and hepatic cysts has been reported in the patients on crizotinib treatment. In this study, we prepared antisense oligonucleotide (ASO)-encapsulated nanoparticles (NPs) with a suitable profile for oral administration for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We chose a water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) method to prepare the NPs using poly(lactide-co-glycolide) as a matrix and Pluronic as a stabilizer. The obtained NPs had a suitable diameter (158 nm) for the penetration of the mucus layer, endocytic uptake by enterocytes, and accumulation in inflammatory lesions in the intestine...

A 3.5-year-old male intact domestic short hair cat presented for a chronic wound and crusts over the claw and claw folds over several months. The cat was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus based on the presence of persistent hyperglycemia, glucosuria, and compatible clinical signs which consist of polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, and weight loss. Glipizide (Glucotrol XL, Pfizer, Indonesia) 2.5 mg orally twice daily was prescribed. By the seventeenth day, the patient's claws and skin around the paw had normalized and the abnormal claw sloughed off, revealing a normal claw underneath...

BACKGROUND: Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is the leading cause of death among systemic mycoses in Brazil. On the other hand, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most prevalent malignant neoplasm of the mouth. Both lesions rarely affect the tongue dorsum and may share similar clinical characteristics. This study aimed to retrieve cases of single oral ulcers diagnosed as PCM or OSCC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted. All patients who had a single ulcer on dorsum of the tongue and confirmed diagnosis of PCM or OSCC were evaluated...

Acute lung injury (ALI) represents a life-threatening condition with high morbidity and mortality despite modern mechanical ventilators and multiple pharmacological strategies. Therefore, there is a need to develop efficacious interventions with minimal side effects. The anti-inflammatory activities of sea cucumber ( Cucumaria frondosa ) and wild blueberry ( Vaccinium angustifolium ) extracts have been reported recently. However, their anti-inflammatory activities and the mechanism of action against ALI are not fully elucidated...

Background/Objectives : Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral mucosal lesions and a very debilitating lesion, especially in paediatric and adolescent patients. The current pharmacotherapy offers a pain relief but not without side effects, and therefore photobiomodulation (PBM) can be an alternative therapy. To the authors' best knowledge, no published study has explored the efficacy of λ 980 nm laser PBM in the management of all RAS subtypes in paediatric and adolescent patients, and therefore, this prospective observational clinical study was conducted to bridge this gap by evaluating λ 980 nm laser PBM efficacy in symptomatic RAS management in paediatric and adolescent patients...

Integra® (Integra LifeSciences) is a well-known dermal regeneration template used in partial and full-thickness wound reconstruction. It can be applied directly on to vascular tissue to create a bed for a skin graft, which is often placed in a second surgery. We present our experience of its novel use in oral and maxillofacial surgery patients, using it directly on bone and cartilage (avascular tissue) without further skin grafting. Patients who required full-thickness excision of lesions down to bone or cartilage and who were treated using Integra® were included...
