It is unclear how increasing body mass index (BMI) influences risk of cancer in young women. We used data from the Medical Birth, Patient and Cause of Death registers collected between 1982 and 2014 to determine the risk of obesity-related cancer types, breast cancer, all cancer and cancer-related death in relation to BMI in 1,386,725 women, aged between 18 and 45 years, in Sweden. During a median follow-up of 16.3 years (IQR 7.7-23.5), 9808 women developed cancer. The hazard ratio (HR) of endometrial and ovarian cancer increased with higher BMI from 1...

Gallbladder carcinoma represents the most aggressive biliary tract cancer and the sixth most common gastrointestinal malignancy. The diagnosis is a challenging clinical task due to its clinical presentation, which is often non-specific, mimicking a heterogeneous group of diseases, as well as benign processes such as complicated cholecystitis, xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis, adenomyomatosis, porcelain gallbladder or metastasis to the gallbladder (most frequently derived from melanoma, renal cell carcinoma)...

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation is a chronic inflammatory reaction microscopically characterized by aggregation of foamy histiocytes, fibrous tissue, and infiltration of various inflammatory cells. In contrast to xanthogranulomatous inflammation in the gallbladder or kidney, xanthogranulomatous pancreatitis is rare. We herein present a case of xanthogranulomatous pancreatitis in a patient who underwent distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy under preoperative suspicion of a pancreatic pseudocyst or pancreatic tumor...

Bile acids (BAs) constitute essential components of cholesterol metabolites that are synthesized in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and excreted into the intestine through the biliary system. They play a crucial role in nutrient absorption, lipid and glucose regulation, and the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis. In additional, BAs have demonstrated the ability to attenuate disease progression such as diabetes, metabolic disorders, heart disease, and respiratory ailments. Intriguingly, recent research has offered exciting evidence to unveil their potential antitumor properties against various cancer cell types including tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer, oral squamous cell carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, gastric cancer, colon cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, prostate cancer, gallbladder cancer, neuroblastoma, and others...

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection remains the primary treatment option for gallbladder carcinoma (GBC). However, there is a pressing demand for prognostic tools that can refine patients' treatment choices and tailor personalized therapies accordingly. AIMS: The nomograms were constructed using the data of a training cohort (n = 378) of GBC patients at Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital (EHBH) between 2008 and 2018. The model's performance was validated in GBC patients (n = 108) at Guangzhou Centre from 2007 to 2018...

Small-cell carcinoma (SCC) of the gallbladder is a rare and distinctive clinicopathological entity, characterized by its aggressive nature with early metastasis and a poor prognosis. We present a rare case of a 53-year-old female who came with a perforated gall bladder and was later diagnosed with SCC. This report details how the patient was managed preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. The patient is under follow-up and has survived so far with subsequent chemotherapy.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) are rare malignancies, which may have unique presentations. The diagnostic process predominantly relies on immunohistochemical analysis. While tumor markers are extensively utilized in diagnosing and monitoring GI malignancies, their specific role in NETs has not been fully explored. This case describes an 83-year-old male presenting with jaundice and general weakness. Diagnostic imaging through MRI and CT angiography (CTA) revealed a nodular texture on the liver's surface suggesting cirrhosis...

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) refers to malignancies of the bile ducts that arise in the intrahepatic, perihilar, or distal (extrahepatic) biliary tree, excluding the gallbladder and ampulla of Vater. Although rare, the majority of these cancers are locally advanced at presentation, making them extremely fatal. We present a case of a 65-year-old man who came in for abdominal pain and ascites and was found to have portal vein thrombosis. Initial imaging showed a hepatic lesion, raising suspicion of a hepatic malignancy...

INTRODUCTION: Mucin hypersecretion promoted by intestinal metaplasia can lead to gallstone formation. The presence of large amounts of mucin induced by a change in biliary epithelium structure is called a mucocele, a usually benign condition studied among animals but rarely described in humans. This entity must be distinguished from hydrops, a condition secondary to an impacted gallstone in the cystic duct leading to an outlet obstruction and distension of the gallbladder. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of a 51-year-old female with lithiasic cholecystitis showing areas of intestinal metaplasia associated with a mucocele...

Gallbladder (GB) disease is classified into two broad categories: GB wall-thickening and protuberant lesions, which include various lesions, such as adenomyomatosis, cholecystitis, GB polyps, and GB carcinoma. This review summarizes recent advances in the differential diagnosis of GB lesions, focusing primarily on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and related technologies. Fundamental B-mode EUS and contrast-enhanced harmonic EUS (CH-EUS) have been reported to be useful for the diagnosis of GB diseases because they can evaluate the thickening of the GB wall and protuberant lesions in detail...

Dedifferentiated/undifferentiated melanoma (DM/UM) is a distinct subtype of malignant melanoma that tends to lose all melanocytic markers of differentiation. DM/UM pose major diagnostic challenges as they could be easily confused with UM sarcoma or carcinoma, thus necessitating the use of molecular studies such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) for detecting melanoma-compatible mutations to confirm such diagnosis. The capability of performing NGS molecular studies on small biopsy material with confirmation of adequacy via rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) has tremendous value in diagnosing DM/UM...

Mirizzi syndrome is a serious complication of gallstone disease. It is caused by the impacted stones in the gallbladder neck or cystic duct. One of the features of Mirizzi syndrome is severe inflammation or dense fibrosis at the Calot's triangle. In our clinical practice, bile duct, branches of right hepatic artery and right portal vein clinging to gallbladder infundibulum are often observed due to gallbladder infundibulum adhered to right hepatic hilum. The intraoperative damage of branches of right hepatic artery occurs more easily than that of bile duct, all of which are hidden pitfalls for surgeons...
