Congenital erythrocytosis (CE) is a rare and heterogeneous disease. The high oxygen affinity hemoglobin (Hb) variants are the most common cause of CE. Herein, we report a Korean patient with isolated erythrocytosis. A 25-year-old man was referred to our hospital for evaluation of high Hb level (Hb 20.4 g/dL, hematocrit 58%, reticulocyte count 2.90%, white blood cell count 6.83×10⁹/L, and platelet count 195×10⁹/L). Bone marrow biopsy revealed normocellular marrow without myeloproliferative features. JAK2 (V617F, exon 12), CALR (exon 9), and MPL W515K/L mutations were not detected...

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is used to treat acute anemia with the goal of increasing blood oxygen-carrying capacity as determined by hematocrit (Hct) and oxygen delivery (DO2). However, increasing Hct also increases blood viscosity, which may thus lower DO2 if the arterial circulation is a rigid hydraulic system as the resistance to blood flow will increase. The net effect of transfusion on DO2 in this system can be analyzed by using the relationship between Hct and systemic blood viscosity of circulating blood at the posttransfusion Hct to calculate DO2 and comparing this value with pretransfusion DO2...

Hemorrhagic shock is generally characterized by hemodynamic instability with cellular hypoxia and diminishing cellular function, resulting from an imbalance between systemic oxygen delivery and consumption and redistribution of fluid and electrolytes. Magnesium (Mg) is the fourth most abundant cation overall and second most abundant intracellular cation in the body and an essential cofactor for the energy production and cellular metabolism. Data for blood total Mg (tMg; free-ionized, protein-bound, and anion-bound forms) and free Mg(2+) levels after a traumatic injury are inconsistent and only limited information is available on hemorrhagic effects on free Mg(2+) as the physiologically active form...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibition with dapagliflozin decreases hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), body weight, BP, and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio). Dapagliflozin also modestly increases hematocrit, likely related to osmotic diuresis/natriuresis. Prior studies suggest that the HbA1c-lowering effects of dapagliflozin attenuate at lower eGFR. However, effects on other cardiovascular risk factors at different eGFR levels are incompletely understood...

Improper dismantling and combustion of electronic waste (e-waste) may release persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals that possess potential risk for human health. Lead (Pb) is carried through the circulatory system by erythrocytes and is known to alter the functions of hematopoietic and immune systems. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of Pb exposure on blood morphology and erythrocyte complement receptor 1 (CR1) levels as related to immunologic function in preschool children. We recruited 484 preschool children, 2- to 6-years of age, among whom 332 children were from Guiyu, a typical and primitive e-waste processing area, and 152 children from Haojiang (reference area)...
