BACKGROUND: Adverse events in the primary care setting result in a direct cost equivalent to at least 2.5% of total healthcare spending. Across OECD countries, they lead to more than seven million avoidable hospital admissions annually. In this manuscript, we describe the protocol of a trial aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of SinergiAPS (a patient-centered audit and feedback intervention) in reducing avoidable hospital admission and explore the factors that may affect its implementation...

Positive-strand RNA viruses encompass a variety of established and emerging eukaryotic pathogens. Their genome replication is confined to specialized cytoplasmic membrane compartments known as replication organelles (ROs). These ROs derive from host membranes, transformed into distinct structures such as invaginated spherules or intricate membrane networks including single- and/or double-membrane vesicles. ROs play a vital role in orchestrating viral RNA synthesis and evading detection by innate immune sensors of the host...

UNLABELLED: In adolescence and especially in females, greater body dissatisfaction has been evidenced, which is defined as a negative evaluation of one's own body, being a strong predictor of eating disorders and obesity. OBJECTIVE: To relate body dissatisfaction with self-esteem, depression, and body mass index in adolescents. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Quantitative, correlational, and cross-sectional study in a sample of 397 school adolescents (180 males and 217 females) from Concepción, Chile, aged 10 to 19 years, to whom the following instruments were applied: Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) to assess body dissatisfaction, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Beck's Depression Inventory-II for those older than 14 years, and Birleson Depression Self-Rating Scale for those younger than 14 years...

BACKGROUND: More than half of women with psychosis take care of their children despite the difficulties caused by the disease. Additionally, these kids have a higher risk of developing a mental health disorder. However, no interventions have been developed to meet these needs. Metacognitive Training (MCT) is a psychological intervention that has demonstrated its efficacy in improving cognitive insight, symptom management and social cognition in people with first-episode psychosis (FEP)...

Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the assessment of the application for renewal of Pediococcus pentosaceus DSM 14021, a technological additive for all animal species. The applicant has provided evidence that the additive currently on the market complies with the existing conditions of authorisation. The Panel concluded that the additive remains safe for all animal species, consumers and the environment under the authorised conditions of use. Regarding user safety, the Panel considers that any exposure through skin and respiratory tract is considered a risk...

The exploration of edible insects, specifically Alphitobius diaperinus and Tenebrio molitor , as sustainable sources of protein for human consumption is an emerging field. However, research into their effects on intestinal health, especially in relation to inflammation and permeability, remains limited. Using ex vivo and in vivo models of intestinal health and disease, in this study we assess the impact of the above insects on intestinal function by focusing on inflammation, barrier dysfunction and morphological changes...

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 pneumonia causes hyperinflammatory response that culminates in acute respiratory syndrome (ARDS) related to increased multiorgan dysfunction and mortality risk. Antiviral-neutralizing immunoglobulins production reflect the host humoral status and illness severity, and thus, immunoglobulin (Ig) circulating levels could be evidence of COVID-19 prognosis. METHODS: The relationship among circulating immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, IgM) and COVID-19 pneumonia was evaluated using clinical information and blood samples in a COVID-19 cohort composed by 320 individuals recruited during the acute phase and followed up to 4 to 8 weeks (n = 252) from the Spanish first to fourth waves...

Although predictors of response to first-generation somatostatin receptor ligands (fg-SRLs), and to a lesser extent to pasireotide, have been studied in acromegaly for many years, their use is still not recommended in clinical guidelines. Is there insufficient evidence to use them? Numerous biomarkers including various clinical, functional, radiological and molecular markers have been identified. The first ones are applicable pre-surgery, while the molecular predictors are utilized for patients not cured after surgery...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Same-day discharge (SDD) after atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation is an effective means to spare healthcare resources. However, safety remains a concern, and besides structural adaptations, SDD requires more efficient logistics and coordination. Therefore, we implemented a streamlined, nurse-coordinated SDD program following a standardized protocol. METHODS: As dedicated SDD coordinator a nurse specialized in ambulatory cardiac interventions was in charge of the full SDD protocol, including eligibility, patient-flow, in-hospital logistics, patient education and discharge as well as early post-discharge follow-up by smartphone-based virtual visits...

Enforcing strict protocols that prevent transmission of airborne infections in prisons is challenging. We examine a large SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in a Catalan penitentiary center from February-March 2021, prior to vaccination deployment. The outbreak was initially detected in one module but spread to four, infecting 7 staff members and 140 incarcerated individuals, 6 of whom were hospitalized (4...

Limited data regarding elevation of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in mobilized donors with G-CSF is available. Inappropriate type I interferon (IFN) signaling during embryo implantation and placentation is linked to poor pregnancy outcomes. Here, we evaluated the consequence of elevated type I IFN exposure on implantation using a biomimetic model of human implantation in an organ-on-a-chip device. We found that type I IFN reduced extravillous trophoblast (EVT) invasion capacity. Analyzing single-cell transcriptomes, we uncovered that IFN truncated endovascular EVT emergence in the implantation-on-a-chip device by stunting EVT epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition...

INTRODUCTION: Hospitalized COVID-19 patients may present acute malnutrition which could influence morbidity and mortality. In the first wave of the pandemic severe weight loss was observed in many hospitalized patients. There is little long-term outcome data on the efficacy of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in light chain deposition disease (LCDD). We identified 51 LCDD patients in the EBMT registry who had undergone upfront ASCT between 1995 and 2021. The median serum creatinine was 280 μmol/L and 45% required renal replacement therapy (RRT) at time of transplant. The melphalan dose was 100mg/m2 in 23%, 140mg/m2 in 55% and 200 mg/m2 in 21%. The rate of very good partial response or better improved from 41% pre-transplant to 66% at Day +100 post-ASCT...
