Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary malignancy of the liver and one of the most frequent causes of death in patients with liver cirrhosis. Simultaneously with the recognition of the clinical relevance of this neoplasm, in recent years there have been important developments in the diagnosis, staging and treatment of HCC. Consequently, the Asociación Española para el Estudio del Hígado has driven the need to update clinical practice guidelines, continuing to invite all the societies involved in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease to participate in the drafting and approval of the document (Sociedad Española de Trasplante Hepático, Sociedad Española de Radiología Médica, Sociedad Española de Radiología Vascular e Intervencionista y Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica)...

INTRODUCTION: Protease inhibitors, boceprevir and telaprevir, have changed the treatment paradigm of chronic hepatitis C (CHC). The objective is analyzing the degree of compliance with the recommendations for boceprevir and telaprevir use that have been issued for the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products in patients with CHC on a tertiary hospital. METHOD: All patients who started treatment with triple therapy between March and September 2012 were included...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: No prospective study has been published investigating etiology of HCC in Latin America. The primary aim of this prospective study was to analyze the etiology of liver disease in patients with HCC from our area. Secondary aims were to evaluate staging using Okuda and BCLC classifications; and percentage of patients receiving treatment. METHODS: The Governing Board of the Latin American Association for the Study of the Liver designed the protocol...

OBJECTIVE: This review updates clinical guidelines on HIV+ and hepatitis A, B and C in coinfected adult patients. METHODS: This consensus has been adopted by an expert panel from several scientific societies (GESIDA/SPNS/AEEH). Published data on epidemiology, natural history, prevention and treatment of viral hepatitis in HIV+ patients have been reviewed. These statements are classified according to the rating scheme of the DHHS for the strength and quality of evidence of the data...

We compared the incidence of and factors associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among hepatitis C virus (HCV)-monoinfected subjects and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/HCV-coinfected individuals, both with decompensated cirrhosis. In a retrospective study, a cohort of 180 individuals with HIV coinfection and 1037 HCV-monoinfected patients with decompensated HCV-related cirrhosis from eight centres in Spain were analyzed. HCC was found in 234 (23%) HCV-monoinfected subjects and in four (2%) HIV-coinfected subjects (p<0...

The impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection on the survival of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related end-stage liver disease (ESLD) is unknown. Because HIV infection is no longer considered an absolute contraindication for liver transplantation in some countries, it has become a priority to address this topic. The objective of this study was to compare the survival of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected patients with decompensated cirrhosis due to HCV. In a retrospective cohort study, the survival of 1,037 HCV monoinfected and 180 HCV/HIV-coinfected patients with cirrhosis after the first hepatic decompensation was analyzed...
