Purpose: Because of growing concerns about lung cancer in female never smokers, low-dose chest CT (LDCT) screening is often performed although it has never shown clinical benefits. We examine whether or not female never smokers really need annual LDCT screening when the initial LDCT showed negative findings. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 4,365 female never smokers aged 40 to 79 years who performed initial LDCT from Aug 2002 to Dec 2007...

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is an autoimmune bullous disease associated with underlying neoplasms, both malignant and benign. The most constant clinical presentation of PNP is the presence of intractable stomatitis. Herein we present a 25-year-old male with a 3-month history of refractory stomatitis especially involving the lips and widespread vesiculobullous eruption on his trunk and extremities. The diagnosis of PNP was confirmed based on histological and serological results. Investigation for the underlying neoplasm revealed a retroperitoneal tumorous mass which was biopsied and diagnosed as the inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT)...

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells which are being explored for various clinical applications. Isolation and in-vitro expansion of MSCs remain important in achieving desired cell number for the therapy. However, in-vitro proliferation of MSCs is often associated with senescence and early onset of apoptosis which limits its therapeutic ability and long term clinical use. Tinospora cordifolia and Withania somnifera are used widely in Ayurveda: the traditional Indian system of medicine and are reported to have rejuvenating and anti-aging potential...

In a karst pit above City of Rijeka in Croatia the hazardous industrial waste was continuously disposed from 1955 to 1990, and later it was periodically used as an illegal dump site. The surface part of a technosol at the edge of dump was analysed mineralogically, geochemically and bacteriologically. From the technosol rich in petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals three isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii were recovered. Isolates from technosol shared many features that are previously described for clinically isolates: the affiliation to IC1 and 2, multi-drug resistant (MDR) or extensively drug-resistant (XDR) antibiotic resistance profile, carbapenem resistance mediated by blaOXA72 and blaOXA23 genes, and the expression of virulence factors...

Pre-menopausal female patients have a prolonged survival than post-menopausal patients, indicating that estrogen and/or estrogen receptor (ER) may have some biological effects on prognosis. ER expression in cancer tissue has been reported to be a significant prognostic marker in multiple human cancers. However, the prognostic value of estrogen and/or ER on female patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is rarely reported. The present study was undertaken to elucidate the associations of serum estradiol level, tissue estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) expression with clinical response and reproductive factor changes in 387 female ESCC patients...

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of disability and death globally. Despite significant progress in neuromonitoring and neuroprotection, pharmacological interventions have failed to generate favorable results. We examined the effect of memantine on serum levels of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), a marker of neuronal damage, and the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) in patients with moderate TBI. Patients were randomly assigned to the control group (who received standard TBI management) and the treatment group (who, alongside their standard management, received enteral memantine 30 mg twice daily for 7 days)...

Assessing agreement is often of interest in biomedical and clinical research when measurements are obtained on the same subjects by different raters or methods. Most classical agreement methods have been focused on global summary statistics, which cannot be used to describe various local agreement patterns. The objective of this work is to study the local agreement pattern between two continuous measurements subject to censoring. In this article, we propose a new agreement measure based on bivariate hazard functions to characterize the local agreement pattern between two correlated survival outcomes...

Broadening clinical evidence has markedly designated inositol(s) as a common and effective therapeutic approach for PCOS and infertility. Although considerable research has been focused on the use in clinical practice of myo-inositol (myo-ins) and D-chiro-inositol (D-chiro-ins), the two major inositol stereoisomers, less attention has been paid to their bioavailability. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to gather and analyze information on inositol(s) bioavailability, to better delineate its optimal concentration for scientific and clinical purposes...

Myo-inositol (MYO) usually represents a therapeutic option for female infertility associated with insulin resistance. Recently, several evidences are accumulating about the potential use of MYO for the treatment of male infertility. This article summarizes the rationale for MYO in the treatment of male infertility. In particular, it illustrates the potential antioxidant and prokinetic role of MYO, and its importance for the modulation of hormonal regulation. In the final part of the manuscript has been added a proposal for a clinical algorithm reserved for patients with asthenozoospermia, where probably MYO could exert specific pharmacological effects...

OBJECTIVE: Insulin resistance (IR) is a common disorder, which can impair female fertility and is characterized by phenotypic heterogeneity. Life-style treatment and insulin sensitizers are commonly used in the management of women with IR and consequent hyperinsulinemia, in order to restore the normal endocrinological and clinical parameters. Metformin (MET) is considered one of the first approaches to this pathology but new evidences are showing promising results using myo-inositol (MYO) in the management of this pathology...
