Objective: To investigate whether Schisandrin B (Sch B) could improve cardiac structure and function in myocardial infarction (MI) mice and related mechanisms. Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice were randomized into sham (n=8), MI+ Sch B (n=24, 80 mg·kg(-1)·d(-1) per gavage) or MI+ vehicle (n=24, equal volume). After treatment for 3 weeks, cardiac function was detected by echocardiography measurement.Infarction size was measured by Evans blue and TTC staining.HE and Masson trichrome staining were used to observe the myocardial inflammation, structure and fibrosis...

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has been demonstrated to be effective and safe for chronic severe functional constipation (CSFC). However, which patients with CSFC will have a better response to acupuncture remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To explore factors related to acupuncture response in patients with CSFC. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of a previous multicenter randomized controlled trial consisting of a 2-week run-in period, 8-week treatment, and 12-week follow-up without treatment in which patients with CSFC were randomly allocated to an electroacupuncture group or a sham electroacupuncture group...

This study was conducted to assess the influence of dietary protein content in poultry when using the 15N-leucine single-injection method to determine endogenous amino acid losses (EAALs) in poultry. Forty-eight cecectomized roosters (2.39 ± 0.23 kg) were randomly allocated to eight dietary treatments containing protein levels of 0, 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%, 15%, 18% and 21%. Each bird was precisely fed an experimental diet of 25 g/kg of body weight. After feeding, all roosters were subcutaneously injected with a 15N-leucine solution at a dose of 20 mg/kg of body weight...

Orthostatic intolerance, one of the principle causes of syncope, can occur secondary to concomitant venous pooling and enhanced capillary filtration. We aimed to evaluate a prototype portable calf active compression brace (ACB) designed to improve orthostatic haemodynamic control. Fourteen healthy volunteers participated in a randomized, placebo controlled, cross-over, double-blind study. Testing consisted of head-upright tilting and walking on a treadmill conducted on two consecutive days with a pair of ACBs wrapped around both calves...

We present paleo-water depth reconstructions for the Pefka E section deposited on the island of Rhodes (Greece) during the early Pleistocene. For these reconstructions, a transfer function (TF) using modern benthic foraminifera surface samples from the Adriatic and Western Mediterranean Seas has been developed. The TF model gives an overall predictive accuracy of ~50 m over a water depth range of ~1200 m. Two separate TF models for shallower and deeper water depth ranges indicate a good predictive accuracy of 9 m for shallower water depths (0-200 m) but far less accuracy of 130 m for deeper water depths (200-1200 m) due to uneven sampling along the water depth gradient...

BACKGROUND: Chronic anal fissures (CAF) are frequently encountered in coloproctology clinics. Chemical sphincterotomy with pharmacological agents is recommended as first-line therapy. Topical nitrates (TN) heal CAF effectively but recurrences are common. An alternative treatment modality is injection of botulinum toxin (BT) into the anal sphincter. We aimed to perform an updated systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the effectiveness of BT and TN in the management of CAF. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane databases were searched for relevant articles from inception until March 2017...

OBJECTIVES: To examine numbers of hours worked and patient visits provided by age and sex of dentist in Australia, and compare with previous estimates to describe trends. METHODS: Data were collected by mailed survey from a random sample (n=2,961) of Australian dentists. Private sector dentists working in clinical practise were included in the analysis. Data were weighted to the age and sex distribution of Australian practising dentists. RESULTS: The adjusted response rate was 49% (n=1,345 dentists)...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Syzygium cumini leaves (SCL) in laying hens diets on productive performance, egg quality and lipid oxidation of yolk. A total of 108 Hysex White laying hens were distributed in a completely randomized design with three treatments and six replicates of six birds each. The treatments consisted of SCL inclusion at dietary levels of 0, 5 and 10 g/kg. There was no significant effect of SCL inclusion on feed intake, laying percentage, weight and egg mass, feed conversion ratio, Haugh units, specific gravity, percentage of yolk, albumen and egg shells and shell thickness...

OBJECTIVE: To compare the incidence of incisional hernia (IH) between midline and transverse specimen extraction site in patients undergoing laparoscopic colectomy. BACKGROUND: Midline specimen extraction incision is most commonly used in laparoscopic colectomy, but has high IH risk. IH may be lower for transverse incision. METHODS: A single-center superiority trial was conducted. Eligible patients undergoing laparoscopic colectomy were randomly assigned to midline or transverse specimen extraction...

BACKGROUND: The VIPP study compared valganciclovir prophylaxis with preemptive treatment regarding efficacy, safety and long-term graft outcome in CMV-positive (R+) renal transplant recipients. METHODS: Multicenter, open-label, randomized clinical study with a 12-month study phase and a follow-up of up to 84 months. Patients in the prophylaxis group received 2x450 mg/day oral valganciclovir for 100 days adjusted to renal function. Preemptive treatment with 2x900 mg/day valganciclovir was initiated at a viral load of ≥400 CMV copies/mL (PCR) and maintained over ≥14 days, followed by secondary prophylaxis...
