Nanomaterials with surface functionalized by different chemical groups can either provoke or attenuate the immune responses of the nanomaterials, which is critical to their biomedical efficacies. In this study we demonstrate that synthetic waterborne polyurethane nanoparticles (PU NPs) can inhibit the macrophage polarization towards the M1 phenotype, but not M2 phenotype. The surface-functionalized PU NPs decrease the secretion levels of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β) for M1 macrophages. Specifically, PU NPs with carboxyl groups on the surface exhibit a greater extent of inhibition on M1 polarization than those with amine groups...

Infection with protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi results in activation of nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat containing receptors (NLRs). NLR activation leads to inflammasome formation, the activation of caspase-1, and the subsequent cleavage of IL-1β and IL-18. Considering that inflammasome activation and IL-1β induction by macrophages are key players for an appropriate T cell response, we investigated the relevance of NLR pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) and caspase-1/11 to elucidate their roles in the induction of different T cell phenotypes and the relationship with parasite load and hepatic inflammation during T...

In mammals, tumor necrosis factor receptor associated factors (TRAFs) are signaling adaptors that regulate diverse physiological processes, including immunity and stress responses. In Arabidopsis, MUSE13 and MUSE14 are redundant TRAF proteins serving as adaptors in the SCFCRP 1 complex to facilitate the turnover of nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeats (NLR) immune receptors. Degradation of MUSE13 is inhibited by proteasome inhibitor, suggesting that the MUSE13 stability is controlled by the 26S proteasome...

Due to the characteristics of high invasiveness, relapse and poor prognosis, the management of malignant gliomas has always been a great challenge. Nod-like receptor (NLR) family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) is a crucial component of the NLRP3 inflammasome, a multiprotein complex that can triggercaspase-1/interleukin-1 (IL-1) mediated inflammatory response once activated and participates in the pathogeny of diverse inflammatory diseases as well as cancers. Herein, we examined the function of NLRP3 in the development of glioma...

Increasing evidences reported that cancer-triggered inflammation was associated with survival prognosis from colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the comprehensive effects of inflammatory-based coNLR-PLR that combines neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) rarely remain to be determined during chemotherapy. We retrospectively analyzed clinical data and baseline laboratory parameters from 153 colorectal cancer patients who underwent palliative adjuvant chemotherapy between January 2009 to January 2012...
