The ileal pouch-anal anastomosis is a commonly accepted neorectum after total proctocolectomy for familial adenomatous polyposis and ulcerative colitis. Generally, patients have decent bowel control, but ileal pouches are not without complications. One relatively uncommon complication is ileal pouch prolapse. Prolapse can be either mucosal or full thickness, similar to rectal prolapse. There is limited literature detailing the frequency and management of ileal pouch prolapse. The majority of the literature is case reports with a few small retrospective studies...

INTRODUCTION:  Stomal prolapse (SP) is characterized by full-thickness protrusion of the bowel through the stoma site. The surgical procedures for SP include local repair, abdominal wall fixation, and stoma relocation. However, previous reports were mostly case reports or case series with a small number of patients and lacked long-term results. A modified Altemeier technique (MAT) has been used for the local repair of SP in our institution, and this study aimed to evaluate its mid-term efficacy...

Rectal prolapse (RP) most commonly occurs among elderly women and is caused by vulnerable suspensory tissue in the pelvis. In Japan, the Gant-Miwa-Thiersch procedure (GMT) is recommended for elderly people with poor general health. We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from 12 patients who underwent GMT at our hospital from September 2005 to July 2021 and investigated the effect of GMT on the mesorectum using abdominal-pelvic computed tomography (CT) performed for other diseases. The median age of the cohort was 82 years, and 92% of the subjects were women...

A 75-year-old woman visited our hospital with constipation. Colonoscopy revealed a submucosal tumor in the rectum. She was followed up as a case of mucosal prolapse syndrome. Six years later, she was referred to our hospital due to hematochezia and abdominal pain. Colonoscopy revealed that the submucosal tumor had an ulcerative appearance with bleeding. Low anterior resection was performed. Amyloid protein deposition was detected from the submucosa to subserosa. Other organs showed no evidence of amyloidosis; we therefore diagnosed the patient with localized rectal amyloidosis...

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic anorectoplasty (LAARP) is useful for the management of rectoprostatic urethral fistula (RPUF), due to easier rectal mobilization, avoidance of posterior sagittal muscular incision, and shorter hospital stay. However, its role in rectobulbar urethral fistula (RBUF) is still debated as there is a chance of urethral diverticulum (UD), due to incomplete dissection. Laparoscopy-assisted modified posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (LAMPSARP) utilizes advantages of LAARP combined with fistula dissection using small sagittal incision preserving puborectalis...

The small GTPase, Rab11a, regulates vesicle trafficking and cell polarity in epithelial cells through interaction with Rab11 family-interacting proteins (Rab11-FIPs). We hypothesized that deficiency of Rab11-FIP1 would affect mucosal integrity in the intestine. Global Rab11FIP1 knockout (KO) mice were generated by deletion of the second exon. Pathology of intestinal tissues was analyzed by immunostaining of colonic sections and RNA-sequencing of isolated colonic epithelial cells. A low concentration of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS, 2%) was added to drinking water for 5 days, and injury score was compared between Rab11FIP1 KO, Rab11FIP2 KO, and heterozygous littermates...

Mebendazole (MBZ) is an efficacious anthelmintic with known anti-inflammatory and fibrinolytic properties. In this study, we aimed to explore the protective effects of this FDA-approved drug against DSS-induced colitis in a murine model either alone or in combination with Sulfasalazine (SSZ), a standard therapy for ulcerative colitis. We found that MBZ significantly improved colitis disease activity index as assessed by changes in body weight, degree of stool consistency, rectal bleeding, and prolapse. We also found that MBZ ameliorated the colon histopathological score by attenuating crypt loss, mucosal damage, and inflammation score in colitis tissues...

Mucosal prolapse syndrome is also known as solitary rectal ulcer syndrome. It may either presents as an ulcer or polyp, which could mimic other pathological lesions such as juvenile polyp, hyperplastic polyp, adenomatous polyp, polyp related inflammatory bowel disease and adenocarcinoma. It can pose as a diagnostic challenge to both the surgeons and pathologists due to the overlapping gross and histological features. The characteristic histological features of mucosal prolapse syndrome are fibromuscular obliteration of lamina propria and splayed hypertrophic muscularis mucosae...

Rectal prolapse is influenced by many factors including connective tissue dysfunction. Currently, there is no data about genetic contribution in the etiology of this disorder. In this study, we performed trio whole-exome sequencing in an 11-year-old girl with mucosal rectal prolapse and her parents and sibling. Genetic testing revealed a novel heterozygous missense variant c.1406G>T; p.G469V in exon 11 of the COLGALT2 gene encoding the GLT25 D2 enzyme. Sanger sequencing confirmed this variant only in the patient while the mother, father and sister showed a wild-type sequence...

Background: Rectal prolapse is more common in elderly women worldwide, but in India, it predominantly occurs in young- and middle-aged males. While ventral mesh rectopexy is proposed as the preferred procedure in females, the debate on the best procedure in men is still wide open. Methods: A retrospective review of all adult male patients operated for external rectal prolapse (ERP) between January 2005 and December 2019 was performed. Patients either underwent modified laparoscopic posterior mesh rectopexy (LPMR) or laparoscopic resection rectopexy (LRR)...

Stercoral ulcers are localized areas of loss of colonic mucosal integrity. They result from pressure necrosis of the colonic mucosa, secondary to chronic constipation and fecal inspissation. These ulcers are rare and, are associated with serious complications, including bleeding and perforation. We present the case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with small bowel evisceration through the anal canal secondary to extraperitoneal perforation of the rectum. The patient underwent emergent exploratory laparotomy with reduction of the bowel, followed by second look laparotomy in 24 hours...

Mucosal prolapse syndrome most commonly involves the rectum and presents as solitary rectal ulcer syndrome and proctitis cystica profunda. Symptoms and endoscopic appearances are nonspecific. Histologically, mucosal prolapse is characterized by fibromuscular obliteration of the lamina propria, and displacement of crypts into submucosa and muscularis mucosae. Mucosal prolapse presenting as polyposis is rare and has only been reported involving the rectosigmoid colon. In this report, we describe a case of mucosal prolapse syndrome presenting as diffuse polyposis and colitis cystica profunda involving the hepatic, splenic flexures and descending colon in a teenage boy suffering from refractory fibrostenosing Crohn's disease...

Rectal prolapse (RP) is a common clinical condition in mice, that does not have a recognized or documented standard ofcare. At our institution, an average of 240 mice develop RP each year. Our practice has been to recommend euthanasia uponidentifying a RP based on its appearance as a painful or distressful condition. This study aimed to assess treatment options that would maintain the RP mucosa and allow mice to reach their study endpoint, and to evaluate the perception of this condition as a painful or distressful event...

This study included a 45-year-old woman. In 20XX, we performed colonoscopy (CS) on fresh bloody stools, and a diagnosis of rectal mucosal prolapse syndrome (MPS) was made. In 20XX+14 years, CS was reexamined because of fresh bloody stools, and a biopsy of the same site revealed well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma. The lesion was resected via endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and histopathologically diagnosed as MPS with high-grade adenoma and well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma.
