The incidence of diabetes in children and adolescents has increased during the past decades, with a 1.9% increase per year in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Patients with diabetes have a greater risk of hospitalizations compared with those without diabetes. Clear evidence has emerged in the past decade that supports appropriate glycemic control in the hospital setting to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the risk of hospital complications and mortality. Determining the appropriate insulin regimen in patients with T1DM in the hospital depends on the clinical status, type of outpatient insulin regimen (multiple daily injections versus pump therapy), glycemic control before admission, nutritional status, procedures, and enteral versus parenteral nutrition...

Constructing a heterojunction by combining two semiconductors with similar band structures is a successful approach to obtaining photocatalysts with high efficiency. Herein, a CuPc/DR-MoS2 heterojunction involving copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and molybdenum disulfide with S-rich vacancies (13.66%) is successfully prepared by the facile hydrothermal method. Experimental results and theoretical calculations firmly demonstrated that photoelectrons exhibit an S-scheme charge transfer mechanism in the CuPc/DR-MoS2 heterojunction...

The primary objective of this review was to determine whether the attenuation of the postoperative inflammatory response (PIR) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) leads to a notable improvement in clinical outcome scores. The secondary objective of this review was to determine the optimal approach in using inflammatory biomarkers, clinical inflammatory assessments, and imaging to quantify the PIR. A systematic literature search of eight major databases was conducted using a predetermined search strategy. C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), knee surface temperature (KST), and clinical outcome data were collected and graphically displayed...

PURPOSE: Ischemic stroke recurrence (ISR) is prevented by inhibiting platelet function. To investigate the impact of high on-treatment platelet reactivity (HTPR) assessed by thromboelastography (TEG) and its risk factors on ISR in individuals who have experienced acute ischemic stroke (AIS) receiving dual anti-platelet therapy (DAPT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: At the end of follow-up, a total of 264 patients who met the criteria were enrolled in this cohort study. The primary endpoint event was a recurrence of ischemic stroke within 90 days of onset...

We introduce the problem of deceptive information retrieval (DIR), in which a user wishes to download a required file out of multiple independent files stored in a system of databases while deceiving the databases by making the databases' predictions on the user-required file index incorrect with high probability. Conceptually, DIR is an extension of private information retrieval (PIR). In PIR, a user downloads a required file without revealing its index to any of the databases. The metric of deception is defined as the probability of error of databases' prediction on the user-required file, minus the corresponding probability of error in PIR...

The COVID-19 pandemic has strained healthcare systems globally. Shortages of hospital beds, reassignment of healthcare workers to COVID-19-dedicated wards, an increased workload, and evolving infection prevention and control measures have potentially contributed to the spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB). To determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic at the University Medical Center Ljubljana, a tertiary teaching hospital, we analyzed the monthly incidence of select bacterial species per patient from 2018 to 2022...

The incidence rate of cancer is increasing year by year due to the aging of the population, unhealthy living, and eating habits. At present, surgery and medication are still the main treatments for cancer, without paying attention to the impact of individual differences in health management on cancer. However, increasing evidence suggests that individual psychological status, dietary habits, and exercise frequency are closely related to the risk and prognosis of cancer. The reminder to humanity is that the medical concept of the unified treatment plan is insufficient in cancer treatment, and a personalized treatment plan may become a breakthrough point...

BACKGROUND: piRNAs play key roles in various diseases. However, the role of piRNAs in sporadic Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unclear. This study was conducted to explore key piRNAs that can be used as biomarkers for sporadic Parkinson's disease. METHODS: Differentially expressed piRNAs (DEPs) and their interaction were investigated using bioinformatics analysis, while the diagnostic value and expression of the selected piRNAs were detected. RESULTS: 42 DEPs were screened between PD and controls...

INTRODUCTION: California is home to the largest population of Armenians in the United States. The historical categorization of Armenians as 'White' or 'Some Other Race' in population databases has likely masked cancer incidence patterns in this population. This is the first study considering cancer incidence among Armenians in California. METHODS: We used the Armenian Surname List and birthplace information in the California Cancer Registry to identify Armenians with cancer diagnosed during 1988-2019...

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that antioxidant-rich diets may prevent hyperlipidemia. However, the relationship between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and hyperlipidemia is unclear. The CDAI is a composite score reflecting the antioxidant content of an individual's diet, and this study aimed to investigate the relationship between CDAI and hyperlipidemia. METHODS: The study used the 2003-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database for cross-sectional analyses and included 27,626 participants aged 20 years and older...

BACKGROUND: In the past, research has shown that a higher body mass index (BMI) is one of the variables that increase the likelihood of kidney stones; however, no studies have found a connection between the two in the type II diabetic population. The purpose of this research is to reveal the association between BMI and kidney stones in the type II diabetic population. METHODS: We selected demographic data, laboratory data, lifestyle, and medical history from the NHANES...

Buildings are rapidly becoming more digitized, largely due to developments in the internet of things (IoT). This provides both opportunities and challenges. One of the central challenges in the process of digitizing buildings is the ability to monitor these buildings' status effectively. This monitoring is essential for services that rely on information about the presence and activities of individuals within different areas of these buildings. Occupancy information (including people counting, occupancy detection, location tracking, and activity detection) plays a vital role in the management of smart buildings...

This study investigated the effect of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) on insulin resistance in pregnant mice with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and underlying mechanism. C57BL/6 mice fed with a high-fat diet for 4 weeks and the newly gestated were selected and injected with streptozotocin for GDM modeling. We demonstrated that the fasting insulin levels (FINS) and insulin sensitivity index (ISI) in serum and blood glucose level were significantly higher in GDM group than in normal control (NC) group. The low or high dose of EPA intervention reduced these levels, and the effect of high dose intervention was more significant...

Orbital plasmacytomas are exceedingly rare neoplasms characterized by the proliferation of monoclonal plasma cells in the orbital soft tissues. Their presentation and clinical course can be diverse, making early diagnosis and management challenging. This case report sheds light on one such instance, emphasizing the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of this uncommon condition. We present an 81-year-old patient with a prior diagnosis of multiple myeloma and bilateral orbital plasmacytomas, highlighting the importance of imaging in diagnosis and management...
