Streptococcus salivarius, a non-pathogenic species and the predominant colonizer of the oral microbiota, finds a wide application in the prevention of upper respiratory tract infections, also reducing the frequency of their main pathogens. In this pilot study, the primary objective was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a nasal spray, S. salivarius 24SMBc, as a medical device in a clinical study involving 20 healthy adult subjects. The secondary aim was to determine the ability of colonization assessed by molecular fingerprinting...

BACKGROUND: Oral breathing and maxillary deficiency are often associated with steep mandibular plane angle, and retrognathic mandible compared with the faces of healthy controls. Some studies suggested that after rapid maxillary expansion, improvement in nasal breathing and repositioning of mandible with transitory increasing of facial height and, in some cases, spontaneous forward repositioning might occur. The above-mentioned mandibular effects could contribute to enlarge oropharynx volume with repositioning of tongue and soft palate with an improvement of upper airway volume after treatment...

Localized nasal argyria has been reported in 3 published articles as secondary to occupational exposure and involving the anterior part of the nose. No previous cases of such pathology involving the rhinopharynx were described. Here we report the first case of localized argyria of the roof and of the posterior wall of the rhinopharynx secondary to prolonged use of nasal drops containing colloidal silver protein. The recognition of such pathology can be useful to increase the number of conditions that must be considered in the differential diagnosis of rhinopharyngeal mucosa alterations...

INTRODUCTION: The rhinopharynx and the parapharyngeal space (PPS) are complex anatomical territories located beneath the skull base. Thorough knowledge of the complex anatomy of the PPS is essential in treatment of pathologies such as parapharyngeal abscesses. The roof of the PPS is overlooked in anatomy. It was hypothesized that the pneumatization pattern of the PPS roof is individually variable, as determined by the variable pneumatization patterns of the sphenoid and temporal bones...

This study provides data on prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in oropharynx, rhinopharynx and vestibulum nasi. Specimens were taken from these three pharyngeal sites in 346 patients and analysed for S. aureus. Abnormal pharyngeal findings and patient histories were recorded. S. aureus was found in 8.1%, 7.2% and 20.2% of all specimens from oropharynx, rhinopharynx and vestibulum nasi, respectively. A strong association between colonization of oropharynx and rhinopharynx was found, especially when vestibulum nasi was not colonized...

We report the CT and MR characteristics of a newborn with a rare, complex malformation characterised by a large rhinopharyngeal and oropharyngeal enterogenous cyst, associated with an osseous defect of the basiocciput, called canalis basilaris medianus (CBM). A partial herniation of the bulb was demonstrated through the bony defect on the midline. The enterogenous cyst occupied the rhinopharynx and oropharynx, narrowing the pharyngeal lumen and making it difficult for the introduction of an orotracheal tube...

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumor of the parotid glands. Rarely it may arise from minor salivary glands of the upper aerodigestive tract. A 57-year-old woman was admitted at our institution presenting with nasal obstruction. Endoscopic evaluation revealed a pedicled mass in the rhinopharynx. After radiological examination, we opted for a transnasal endoscopic-assisted excision of the mass under general anaesthesia. Histological evaluation deponed for pleomorphic adenoma with clear surgical margins...

This chapter will describe the use of organ cultures of human nasopharyngeal mucosa to study the interaction of Neisseria meningitidis with this complex tissue. Colonization of nasopharyngeal mucosa is the first step in the pathogenesis of meningococcal disease. Supporting evidence for this is the correlation between the prevalence of community carriage and the occurrence of meningococcal disease (1). During nonepidemic periods, the baseline prevalence of nasopharyngeal carriage of meningococci is 5-10% but is considerably higher in certain populations such as military personnel (2), and in households of cases (3)...

Symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) are nasal blockage, nasal discharge, postnasal drip, facial pain, headache, and reduction or loss of smell, but they are often subtle and make it difficult to obtain a firm diagnosis based only on clinical data, and especially to distinguish CRS from persistent rhinitis. A diagnosis of certainty of CRS relies upon either direct observation by nasal fibroendoscopy of nasal turbinates, middle meatus, and rhinopharynx, detecting mucopurulent discharge from the middle meatus, and/or oedema or mucosal obstruction, or by imaging of the rhinosinusal cavities...

The airways should be considered as a functional unit. Indeed, disorders involving the upper respiratory tract (URT) spread to the lower respiratory tract (LRT). Modern functional anatomy divides URT in three, mutually dependent, junction boxes: i) the ostio-meatal complex (OMC), ii) the spheno-ethmoidal recess (SER), and iii) the rhinopharynx (RP). The first is the most interesting as it joins the anterior paranasal sinuses with the nose. The correct ventilation and the effective mucociliary clearance of these three pathophysiologic junction boxes condition the healthy physiology of the entire respiratory system...

Several histopathological modalities of tumours can grow in the rhinopharynx. Solitary extramedullary plasmocytoma (SEP) is a low frequent variety of low-grade lymphoma. The aim of this work is to present a new case of SEP localized in rhinopharynx and to perform a review of diagnostic and therapeutic protocols of these neoplasias. They must be taken into account in the differential diagnosis of nasopharyngeal tumours.
