BACKGROUND: Cluster of differentiation 47 (CD47) negatively regulates macrophage phagocytosis and is correlated with adverse survival of multiple cancers. In melanoma patients, especially in Chinese melanoma patients, its prognostic value is unclear. In this study, we aim to study the prognostic value of CD47 in a Chinse melanoma patient cohort and its immunomodulation roles in mouse model. METHOD: 164 melanoma tissue specimens were collected. The expression of CD47 in these clinical samples was examined by immunohistochemistry staining (IHC)...

Cisplatin (CP) is a potent and widely used chemotherapeutic agent. However, the clinical benefits of CP are compromised because it elicits nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. In this study, we investigated the nephroprotective effects of the phytochemical genipin (GP) isolated from the gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) fruit, using a murine model of CP-induced nephropathy. GP pretreatment attenuated the CP-induced renal tissue injury by diminishing the serum blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and cystatin C levels, as well as those of kidney injury molecule-1...

BACKGROUND: In patients with left ventricular heart failure (HF), the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH) is common and represents a strong predictor of death. Despite recent advances in the pathophysiological understanding there is as yet no prospect of cure of this deadly clinical entity and the majority of patients continue to progress to right ventricular failure and die. Furthermore, there is no single medical treatment currently approved for PH related to HF. There is, therefore an urgent unmet need to identify novel pharmacological agents that will prevent the progressive increased or reverse the elevated pulmonary arterial pressures while enhancing cardiac performance in HF...

OBJECTIVES: Ginkgo biloba L. is called a living fossil plant, and could be used for the treatment of cancer thousands of years ago in China. The extracts prepared from the Ginkgo biloba exocarp (Ginkgo biloba exocarp extracts, GBEE) has a significant anti-cancer effect. Autophagy plays an important role in the occurrence and development of cancer as programmed cell death (PCD) type II. Thus it would be interesting to study the effects and mechanisms of GBEE inducing autophagy in Lewis lung cancer (LLC) cells...

REVIEW
María Gabriela Montiel Schneider, Verónica Leticia Lassalle
Cardiovascular complications derivate from atherosclerosis are the main cause of death in western world. An early detection of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques is primordial for a better care of patients suffering the pathology. In this context nanotechnology has emerged as a promising tool to achieve this goal. Nanoparticles based on magnetic iron oxide (MNPs) have been extensively studied in cardiovascular diseases diagnosis, as well as in the treatment and diagnostic of other pathologies. The present review aims to describe and analyze the most current literature regarding to this topic, offering the level of detail required to reproduce the experimental tasks providing a critical input of the latest available reports...

Oleanolic acid (OA) is a triterpenoid contained in many herbal medicines. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of OA against D-galactosame plus lipopolysaccharides (D-GalN/LPS)-induced acute liver injury and the underling mechanisms. Mice were randomly divided into normal control with vehicles only (corn oil), D-GalN/LPS only (700mg/10μg/kg, ip), OA-po (200μmol/kg in corn oil, po) plus D-GalN/LPS, and OA-sc (50μmol/kg in 2% tween 80, sc) plus D-GalN/LPS groups. OA pretreatment was conducted twice daily for 4 consecutive days...

Evidence regarding carcinogenic mechanisms serves a critical role in International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Monograph evaluations. Three recent IARC Working Groups pioneered inclusion of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ToxCast program high-throughput screening (HTS) data to supplement other mechanistic evidence. In Monograph V110, HTS profiles were compared between perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and prototypical activators across multiple nuclear receptors. For Monograph V112 -113, HTS assays were mapped to 10 key characteristics of carcinogens identified by an IARC expert group, and systematically considered as an additional mechanistic data stream...

Purpose: To analyze the proportion and cross-sectional area of myofibers containing myosin heavy chain slow-twitch (MyHCI) and myosin heavy chain slow tonic (MyHCsto) in extraocular muscles of autopsied amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients with either spinal or bulbar site of disease onset. Methods: Whole-muscle cross sections from the middle portion of the medial rectus were labeled with antibodies against MyHCI or MyHCsto and laminin. Myofibers labeled with the MyHC antibodies (MyHCI+sto) and the total number of myofibers were quantified in the orbital and global layer of 6 control individuals and 18 ALS patients...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cystic fibrosis (CF) liver disease is the third most frequent cause of death in CF patients. Although it alters fatty acid (FA) metabolism, data concerning the profile of FA in CF patients with liver cirrhosis is lacking. This study aimed to assess the FA composition of serum phospholipids in CF patients with and without liver cirrhosis. METHODS: The study comprised 25 CF patients with liver cirrhosis and 25 without it. We assessed Z-scores for body height and weight, lung function, exocrine pancreatic sufficiency and colonization with Pseudomonas aeruginosa...

In the present study, a series of 2'- and 4'-aminochalcones were synthesized and their antiproliferative activity against a canine malignant histiocytic cell line (DH82) was evaluated. Particularly aminochalcones with a hydrophobic substituent on ring B proved to be potent antiproliferative agents. Among these compounds, aminochalcones 3, 4 and 11 inhibited the growth of DH82 cells, with IC50 values of 34.4, 31.4 and 38.2 μM, respectively, and were three times more potent than etoposide (IC50 = 95.5 μM)...

Two ruthenium(II) complexes Ru1 and Ru2 bearing as a one ligand 2,2'-bipyridine substituted by a semicarbazone 2-formylopyridine moiety (bpySC: 5-(4-{4'-methyl-[2,2'-bipyridine]-4-yl}but-1-yn-1-yl)pyridine-2-carbaldehyde semicarbazone) and as the others 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dip), respectively, as auxiliary ligands have been prepared. Their biological activity has been studied on murine colon carcinoma (CT26) and human lung adenocarcinoma (A549) cell lines. The anti-proliferative activity was dependent on the presence of bpy or dip in the complex, with one order of magnitude higher cytotoxicity for Ru2 (dip ligands)...
