Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mental disorder with various hypotheses regarding its pathogenesis. This article provides a summary of numerous studies on the variations in inflammatory cytokine levels in patients with BD and the effects of treatment with antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and antidepressants on these levels. In addition, patients with autoimmune diseases who use anti-inflammatory monoclonal antibodies experience symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia. These pieces of evidence suggest a potential association between immune inflammation and BD and offer new possibilities for therapy...

Bipolar disorder (BD) is commonly comorbid with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). However, little is known about their relationship. This study aimed to assess the impact of comorbid PMS or PMDD on the clinical characteristics of BD. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 262 women with BD. PMS and PMDD were screened with the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool (PSST). Symptomatic features were assessed with Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and atypical features by the depressive episode section of SCID-I/P...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute encephalitis is associated with psychiatric symptoms. Despite this, the extent of mental health problems following encephalitis has not been systematically reported. METHODS: We recruited adults who had been diagnosed with encephalitis of any aetiology to complete a web-based questionnaire. RESULTS: In total, 445 respondents from 31 countries (55.1% UK, 23.1% USA) responded. Infectious encephalitis constituted 65...

This case illustrates the adverse cognitive and affective effects associated with the use of an intrauterine hormonal contraceptive, which could be confused with symptoms of early onset dementia. We present a case of a 42-year-old woman diagnosed with seronegative spondyloarthropathy who subsequently developed anxiety and depressive symptoms after the implantation of a Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System (LNG-IUS). Three years later, she began to experience memory and attentional failures, refractory pain, and severe depression...

BACKGROUND: Up-to-date data on population-level risk factors for postpartum psychosis is limited, although increasing substance use disorders, psychiatric disorders, autoimmune disorders, and other medical comorbidities in the obstetrical population may be contributing to the increased baseline risk of postpartum psychosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine trends in and risk factors for postpartum psychosis during delivery hospitalizations and postpartum readmissions...

BACKGROUND: The hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis coordinates brain development and post-developmental function. Thyroid hormone variations, even within the normal range, have been associated with the risk of developing common psychiatric disorders, although the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. METHODS: To get new insight into the potentially shared mechanisms underlying thyroid dysfunction and psychiatric disorders, we performed a comprehensive analysis of multiple phenotypic and genotypic databases...

Introduction: Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease affecting exocrine glands and other organs. At the onset of the disease and during its course, it most commonly manifests as neuropsychiatric symptoms, most frequently, depression and anxiety. However, the association with bipolar disorder seems rare and not frequently documented. Case report: Our case report presents a 43-year-old male complaining from neuropsychiatric symptoms including but not limited to periods of elevated mood, increased energy, headaches...

Neuropsychiatric manifestations in Sjögren's syndrome are common and can occur not only during its course, but also at the onset of the disease. Depression and anxiety were the most frequently described symptoms. However, the association with bipolar disorder seems to be rare and not well documented. This case report presents a patient with bipolar disorder as comorbidity with Sjögren's syndrome, suggesting that bipolar disorder could be associated with this autoimmune disease, which could lead to delaying diagnosis and treatment...

Objective: To present a review of the literature on the clinical presentation and pathophysiology of anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor encephalopathy (ANMDARE) with attention to both the more commonly recognized psychotic symptom prodrome and the less well-understood depressive symptom prodrome. Data Sources: The search for clinical neuropsychiatric phenomena and proposed mechanisms involved in ANMDARE pathophysiology was conducted in PubMed. English-language articles published up to September 2019 were identified using a combination of the following search terms: N-methyl-d-aspartate, anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, schizophrenia, psychosis, depression, major depressive disorder, bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder...

BACKGROUND: Converging and accumulating evidence for the cross-communication among the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems, a field of study known as psychoneuroimmunology, implicates immunological dysfunction as a shared and common mechanism of both mental and physical illness. For example, psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and anxiety disorders have higher prevalence rates across a spectrum of autoimmune conditions compared to the general population...

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of five common psychiatrist-diagnosed disorders in patients with pSS. METHOD: Using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, 688 patients with newly diagnosed pSS between 2000 and 2012 were identified. Two comparison cohorts were assembled, namely, 3440 patients without pSS and 1302 newly diagnosed patients with rheumatoid arthritis...

Men and women often experience different symptoms or rates of occurrence for a variety of mood disorders. Many of the symptoms of mood disorders overlap with autoimmune disorders, which also have a higher prevalence in women. There is a growing interest in exploring the immune system to provide biomarkers for diagnosis of mood disorders, along with new targets for developing treatments. This review examines known sex differences in the immune system and their relationship to mood disorders. We focus on immune alterations associated with unipolar depression, bipolar depression, and anxiety disorders...

BACKGROUND: Although the association of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine with autism spectrum disorder has been convincingly disproven, the onset of certain brain-related autoimmune and inflammatory disorders has been found to be temporally associated with the antecedent administration of various vaccines. This study examines whether antecedent vaccinations are associated with increased incidence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anorexia nervosa (AN), anxiety disorder, chronic tic disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder in a national sample of privately insured children...

UNLABELLED: The interferon alpha stands as a reference both in oncology and virology. But its efficiency is limited by frequent somatic as well as neuropsychic side effects. As a matter of fact, the reduction or the ending of a chemotherapy treatment come chiefly from the psychiatric complications caused by the use of interferon. For about 30% of patients, various psychic disorders are noticed: personality disorders, mood disorders, anxiety states, suicidal tendencies, manic and psychotic symptoms...

The advances in the careful screening and diagnosis of women with PMS has led to the ability to conduct epidemiologic, etiologic, and treatment studies in well-defined samples of women. Prospective symptom charting, scoring methods, and careful clinical psychiatric and medical evaluation are necessary to rule out concurrent psychiatric and medical disorders. Studies of women with PMDD have suggested several promising pharmacologic treatment options. Whether these treatment options are also successful for women with milder premenstrual symptoms, with premenstrual exacerbation of underlying conditions, or with premenstrual symptoms superimposed on underlying psychiatric and medical conditions remains to be studied...
