Salt (NaCl), is an essential nutrient for survival, while excessive salt can be detrimental. In the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster , internal taste organs in the pharynx are critical gatekeepers impacting the decision to accept or reject a food. Currently, our understanding of the mechanism through which pharyngeal gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) sense high salt are rudimentary. Here, we found that a member of the ionotropic receptor family, Ir60b , is expressed exclusively in a pair of GRNs activated by high salt...

Texture modification in the form of gels or jellies is used for patients with dysphagia. For over 20 years, our group has been using gelatin jellies, a type of gel, as a starting diet for patients with dysphagia. Gelatin jellies are served in a small-sliced form and swallowed whole. In sliced jelly whole swallowing (SJWS), sliced gelatin jelly (SGJ) passes through the pharynx in one lump without collapsing. This study aimed to examine the usefulness of SJWS. We analyzed the images of videofluoroscopic swallowing studies performed using the normalized residue ratio scale (NRRSv: vallecula, NRRSp: pyriform sinus), the penetration-aspiration scale (PAS), and pharyngeal transit time (PTT) in 50 patients with dysphagia and compared the results in a prospective study...

Of all the head and neck tumors, salivary gland tumors account to 3%. Pleomorphic adenomas are one of the most common benign tumors arising from major salivary glands, although it could also develop from minor salivary glands situated at accessory sites like nasal cavity, pharynx, parapharyngeal space, lacrimal glands etc. Tumors of infratemporal fossa are quite unusual, mainly because of its hidden location in retromaxillary region. We report an unusual case of 65 years old male presenting with complaint of progressive left cheek swelling for 4 years...

Distribution of endomorphin-1 (EM-1) was immunohistochemically investigated in the rat cranial sensory ganglia. Small to medium-sized neurons in the trigeminal (TG), petrosal (PG), and jugular ganglia (JG) expressed EM-1-immunoreactivity. However, EM-1-immunoreactive (-ir) neurons were infrequent in the nodose ganglion. In the brainstem, EM-1-ir varicose fibers were detected in the superficial layer of the medullary dorsal horn and the caudal part of the nucleus tractus solitarius. By trichrome immunofluorescence analysis, approximately 70% of EM-1-ir neurons were also immunoreactive for transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) in all the examined ganglia...

Elucidating the expression of microRNAs in developing single cells is critical for functional discovery. Here, we construct scCAMERA (single-cell cartography of microRNA expression based on reporter assay), utilizing promoter-driven fluorescent reporters in conjunction with imaging and lineage tracing. The cartography delineates the transcriptional activity of 54 conserved microRNAs in lineage-resolved single cells throughout C. elegans embryogenesis. The combinatorial expression of microRNAs partitions cells into fine clusters reflecting their function and anatomy...

The pharyngeal endoderm, an innovation of deuterostome ancestors, contributes to pharyngeal development by influencing the patterning and differentiation of pharyngeal structures in vertebrates; however, the evolutionary origin of the pharyngeal organs in vertebrates is largely unknown. The endostyle, a distinct pharyngeal organ exclusively present in basal chordates, represents a good model for understanding pharyngeal organ origins. Using Stereo-seq and single-cell RNA sequencing, we constructed aspatially resolved single-cell atlas for the endostyle of the ascidian Styela clava ...

Masses in the parapharyngeal area are rare and often due to infectious phenomena arising from the oral cavity or pharynx which lead to abscess formation. Less frequently, the lesion can be neoplastic. Tumours of the parapharyngeal space are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all head and neck neoplasms. We report the case of a patient who came to our observation for mandibular pain. Multiparametric diagnostic imaging was done thus showing a parapharyngeal mass. An ultrasound guided biopsy was performed by a transcutaneous route with a high median approach at neck level, to characterize the mass in the right tonsillar region...

BACKGROUND: Individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have been reported to have increased overall risk of cancer. In addition, individuals with a kidney transplant/transplantation (KT) have markedly increased cancer risk due to chronic use of immunosuppressive agents. However, it has not been elucidated whether the observed excess cancer risk is related to KT or whether diabetic kidney disease (DKD) per se is a risk factor for cancer in individuals with T1D. Attempts to explain the origin and diversification of vertebrates have commonly invoked the evolution of feeding ecology, contrasting the passive suspension feeding of invertebrate chordates and larval lampreys with active predation in living jawed vertebrates. Of the extinct jawless vertebrates that phylogenetically intercalate these living groups, the feeding apparatus is well-preserved only in the early diverging stem-gnathostome heterostracans. However, its anatomy remains poorly understood. Here, we use X-ray microtomography to characterize the feeding apparatus of the pteraspid heterostracan Rhinopteraspis dunensis (Roemer, 1855)...

BACKGROUND: A fish spike stuck in the throat is a common ear, nose, and throat (ENT) emergency. However, it is very rare for a fish spike to reach the thyroid tissue through the throat, which is very dangerous and can lead to pharyngeal fistula, cervical abscess, mediastinal abscess, and thyroid abscess. Proper and timely management can help reduce complications, especially in elderly patients. Cherubism is an uncommon, multilocular cystic condition of the jaws. This autosomal dominant, nonneoplastic, fibro-osseous condition of the jaws affects children and is self-limiting. Clinically, it shows up as an expansion or distortion of the jaw together with an unnatural teeth alignment. In their most severe forms, these deformations might cause phonation difficulties, decreased pharynx lumen, visual issues, and psychological effects. This case report describes a case report of two siblings involving the maxilla and the mandible presenting with a painless bilateral symmetrical enlargement...
