OBJECTIVE: The question whether arterial stiffness in hypertension is increased solely because of increased arterial pressure is not solved. Because measurement of arterial stiffness is highly dependent on measurement of blood pressure (BP), the development of methods independent of BP is necessary for clarifying this question. Ultrafast echography (UFE, Supersonic Imagine, Aix en Provence, France) makes use of very fast sampling rate (up to 10 kHz), so transient events such as pressure wave arrival can be tracked...

Urinary steroid profiling (USP) was studied using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) methods in 108 patients with adrenocortical adenoma (ACA) and in 31 patients with adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). Thirteen ACC and Cushing's syndrome (ACC-CS) patients had two types of USP as well as 18 ACC patients without hypercortisolism. These four types differed by androgen and glucocorticoid secretion of the adrenal cortex. Fifteen main ACC features were observed by GC-MS...

Background. Since its introduction in 1996, uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) has become standard medical practice in the management of symptomatic uterine fibroids. An extremely rare complication, pyomyoma, has been reported only 5 times previously in the literature following UFE. Case. A 37-year-old woman underwent UFE for symptomatic leiomyomas of the uterus. Signs and symptoms of uterine infection ensued, beginning at 6 days following the procedure. Recurrent fevers and increasing leukocytosis despite the intravenous administration of appropriate antibiotics eventually necessitated surgical intervention on postprocedure day #18...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to analyze the plasma and urinary cortisol (F) and cortisone (E) levels in normotensive and hypertensive pregnant women. The parameters known to reflect the function of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11β-HSD2) were calculated to verify the changes in glucocorticoid balance over the course of gestational hypertension (GH) and pre-eclampsia (PE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included women in the third trimester of pregnancy, diagnosed with: GH (n = 29), PE (n = 26), or chronic hypertension (CH; n = 22)...

BACKGROUND: This study compares the DSM-IV and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for eating disorders. DSM-IV resulted in a large number of patients being diagnosed with Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). In DSM-5 the residual category is renamed Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED) and Unspecified Eating Disorders (UFED) however the diagnostic criteria for the residual category in each of the diagnostic systems remains the same. This study aims to evaluate the changes in percentages of patients in a residual DSM-IV category compared to a residual DSM-5 category by retrospectively applying DSM-5 criteria to the clinical records of a patient population in a clinical setting...

In adrenal incidentaloma (AI) patients, beside the cortisol secretion, a different 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (HSD11B2) activity, measurable by 24-h urinary cortisol/cortisone ratio (R-UFF/UFE) (the higher R-UFF/UFE the lower HSD11B2 activity), could influence the occurrence of the subclinical hypercortisolism (SH)-related complications (hypertension, type 2 diabetes, obesity). We evaluated whether in AI patients, UFF levels are associated to UFE levels, and the HSD11B2 activity to the complications presence...

OBJECTIVE: Renal 11 beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11BHSD2) is a key molecular player in the renin- angiotensin- aldosterone system (RAAS). We hypothesize that decreased renal 11BHSD2 activity, as measured by increased urinary free cortisol to cortisone (UFF/UFE) ratio using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS), may be an important biomarker in identifying diabetic patients with increased left ventricular mass. DESIGN AND METHOD: We studied insulin-naive male patients with type 2 diabetes and stage 1 hypertension (blood pressure of 140-160/90-100 mmHg) in this study...

We report a case of a 20-week pregnant woman, who underwent embolisation of a cervical fibroid to end a life-threatening massive bleeding. This is the first reported case in the literature of a super-selective uterine fibroid embolisation (UFE) in a pregnant woman, even though pregnancy is considered an absolute contraindication for UFE. This rare case demonstrates that UFE can be safely performed during pregnancy providing an excellent short- and long-term clinical outcome for both mother and child.

INTRODUCTION: Early literature suggested that the size of the uterus, the size of the dominant fibroid, and the amount of applied embolization particles would be the risk factors for major postprocedural complications, but recent publications have confuted these early results. The purpose of our study was to evaluate whether the size of the dominant fibroid would influence the complication rate and effectiveness in a large single-center cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 28 April 2008 until 31 December 2012, 303 patients had uterine artery embolization (UAE)...

Endocytosis is a ubiquitous eukaryotic membrane budding, vesiculation and internalization process fulfilling numerous roles including compensation of membrane area increase after bursts of exocytosis. The mechanism of the coupling between these two processes to enable homeostasis is not well understood. Recently, an ultrafast endocytosis (UFE) pathway was revealed with a speed significantly exceeding classical clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME). Membrane tension reduction is a potential mechanism by which endocytosis can be rapidly activated at remote sites...
