Despite the combined antiretroviral therapy has improved the length and quality of life of HIV infected patients, the survival of these patients is always decreased compared with the general population. This is the consequence of non-infectious illnesses including cardio vascular diseases. In fact large studies have indicated an increased risk of coronary atherosclerotic disease, myocardial infarction even in HIV patients on cART. In HIV infected patients several factors may contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular problems: life-style, metabolic parameters, genetic predisposition, viral factors, immune activation, chronic inflammation and side effects of antiretroviral therapy...

BACKGROUND: Sodium butyrate (NaB) is a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor exhibiting anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects in a rat ischemic model of stroke as well as a myocardial ischemia model. Although clinical evidence shows that older women are at higher risk for stroke occurrence and greater stroke severity, no studies have evaluated the effectiveness of NaB either in females or in older animals. METHODS: To determine the effects of NaB on stroke in older females, acyclic middle-aged Sprague-Dawley female rats (9-11 months old, constant diestrus) were subject to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) by intracerebral injection of recombinant endothelin-1...

Inflammatory processes are firmly established as central to the development and complications of cardiovascular diseases. Elevated levels of inflammatory markers have been shown to be predictive of future cardiovascular events. The specific targeting of these processes in experimental models has been shown to attenuate myocardial and arterial injury, reduce disease progression, and promote healing. However, the translation of these observations and the demonstration of clear efficacy in clinical practice have been disappointing...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common supraventricular arrhythmia following ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Oxidative stress and inflammation may cause structural and electrical remodeling in the atria making these critical processes in the pathology of AF. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association between total oxidative status (TOS), total antioxidative capacity (TAC) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in the development of AF in patients presenting with STEMI. This prospective cohort study consisted of 346 patients with STEMI...

Significant associations between clinical history factors, lipid metabolism parameters, and type of atherosclerotic process (area of vascular lesions and severity of clinical manifestations) were detected. The predominance of generalized atherosclerosis in chronic coronary heart disease group was associated with patients' age, more incident excessive body weight and type 2 diabetes mellitus, and more severe course of arterial hypertension. Increased lipid spectrum atherogenicity was significantly more often observed in generalized atherosclerosis in the myocardial infarction group...

The p38α, also named Mapk14, is a pro-apoptotic protein, which is reported to be downregulated 2 h after cerebral ischemia. However, little is known what causes the downregulation of p38α protein level. Here, we studied the effect of cerebral ischemia on p38α mRNA expression and p38α protein level in brain of mice. We found that p38α protein level is reduced after middle cerebral artery occlusion. However, at the meantime, p38α mRNA expression has no detectable changes, suggesting that the possible posttranscription is regulated by ischemia...

Statins are primarily metabolized by cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), which reduces clopidogrel to its active metabolite. Recent studies suggest that CYP3A4-metabolized statins attenuate clopidogrel's anti-aggregatory effect on platelets. We aimed to assess the impact of concomitant CYP3A4-metabolized statin and clopidogrel use on antiplatelet activity and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We enrolled 1187 patients from the HOST-ASSURE trial with platelet reactivity unit (PRU) values at both baseline and 1 month...

Cell death in MI is the most critical determinant of subsequent left ventricular remodeling and heart failure. Besides apoptosis, autophagy and necroptosis have been recently found to be another two regulated cell death styles. HGF has been reported to have a protective role in MI, but its impact on the three death styles remains unclear. Thus, our study was performed to investigate the distribution of autophagy, apoptosis and necroptosis in cardiac tissues after MI and explore the role and mechanism of Ad-HGF on cardiac remodeling by regulating the three death styles...

Acute heart failure is still characterized by poor prognosis with high mortality. Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and hemodynamic measurements. Early coronary revascularization in cardiogenic shock complicating myocardial infarction improves outcome. The further contemporary therapeutic options in the management of acute heart failure are limited to a merely symptomatic effect with relief of dyspnea, reduction of volume overload and improvement of hemodynamic parameters by vasodilators (in hypertension) or inotropic and vasopressor agents (in hypotension)...

INTRODUCTION: Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) plays a critical role in inducing tumor cell infiltration, and this invasive phenotype is caused by up-regulation of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2. The relationship between Ang-2 and MMP-2 in atherosclerosis has not been reported yet. The aim is to measure the plasma concentrations of Ang-1, Ang-2 and MMP-2 and assess the correlation between the concentrations of these factors in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The testing was done in a cross-sectional study...
