OBJECTIVE: To investigate a method for total reconstruction of auricle. METHODS: 90 patients (101 ears) with congenital microtia underwent two-stage operations for auricular reconstruction. The first stage involved fabrication and grafting of autologous costal cartilage, removing the remnant ear cartilage, embedding the framework into local flap of the mastoid region, transferring the remnant ear lobule flap to link to the inferior framework. The second stage was creating an auriculocephalic sulcus...

The treatment of serious tissue defects on the diabetic foot is complicated and tedious because of a combination of pathogenetic mechanisms that influence healing. Diabetic neuropathies (sensory, motor, vegetative), ischaemia and microangiopathies contribute in varying degrees to the adverse healing. The submitted three-year prospective study was focused on an analysis of the pathogenetic factors with the objective of defining the indications for one of three types of microsurgical transfer: 1. a free flap sutured directly to the vessels at the site of the defect (in predominantly neuropathic defects); 2...

Since 1973 16 reconstructions of the hypopharynx and cervical esophagus were performed. The restoration of swallowing was achieved in 7 cases after partial resection of the pharynx, 9 times after total laryngo-pharyngectomy and twice after laryngo-pharyngo-esophagectomy. The indication for surgery and criteria for the surgical methods to be applied are discussed. It is possible to combine the reconstruction of the pharynx with building up a neoglottis with Staffieri's technique for restoring voice function...
