OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association between the number of teeth, food intake, and cognitive function in Japanese community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: This 9-year longitudinal study included a total of 293 analyzable participants who participated in baseline and follow-up surveys. Dental status (number of teeth and periodontal pocket depth), dietary assessment using the brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire, cognitive function, and the following confounding factors were evaluated: educational level, financial satisfaction, living situation, smoking and drinking habits, history of chronic diseases, apolipoprotein E-ε4 carrier, body mass index, handgrip strength, instrumental activities of daily living, and depressive symptomatology...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of two different intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) pulse doses in patients with severe microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA). METHODS: We emulated a target trial using observational data from the nationwide registry in Japan. Patients with severe glomerulonephritis or diffuse alveolar haemorrhage were selected and pseudo-randomised into three groups using propensity score-based overlap weighting as follows: non-IVMP, IVMP 0...

The demand for monitoring anthropogenic U isotopes, 236 U and 233 U, in seawater will continue to increase due to radioecological issues and the need for tools for environmental dynamics research. In response to this growing demand, herein, a novel and simple method was developed for the collection of U isotopes in seawater, both in the laboratory and field, using a fabric-like amidoxime adsorbent. The results from the adsorption studies showed that the optimum conditions for processing seawater in a glass beaker were as follows: seawater pH 4, amidoxime adsorbent 0...

Background: Although there are many reports of temperature being associated with the onset of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), few studies have examined differences in ACS due to climatic differences between Japan and Thailand. The aim of this joint Japan-Thailand study was to compare patients with myocardial infarction in Japanese and Thai hospitals in different climates. Methods and Results: We estimated the climate data in 2021 for the Wakayama Prefecture and Chonburi Province, two medium-sized cities in Japan and Thailand, respectively, and ACS patients who were treated at the Wakayama Medical University (WMU) and Burapha University Hospital (BUH), the two main hospitals in these provinces (ACS patient numbers: WMU, n=177; BUH, n=93), respectively...

BACKGROUND: To understand age-related changes in sweet taste perception in daily life, it is important to understand taste intensity at the suprathreshold level. Previous studies have attempted to characterize the temporal aspects of human taste perception in terms of time-intensity evaluations. The perception of dynamic taste intensity in older adults increases slowly for salty taste; however, there have been no previous studies on time-intensity sensory evaluation of sweet taste in older adults...

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown inconsistent results regarding the link between smoking and breast cancer risk, despite the biological plausibility of a positive association. METHODS: Participants were 166 611 women from nine prospective cohort studies in Japan which launched in 1984-1994 and followed for 8-22 years. Information on smoking and secondhand smoke was obtained through self-administered baseline questionnaires. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in women of reproductive age, but its pathology has not been fully characterized and the optimal treatment strategy remains unclear. Cellular senescence is a permanent state of cell-cycle arrest that can be induced by multiple stresses. Senescent cells contribute to the pathogenesis of various diseases, owing to an alteration in secretory profile, termed 'senescence-associated secretory phenotype' (SASP), including with respect to pro-inflammatory cytokines...

The study presents a novel setup for measuring the flow regime of hydrate particles in a gas-dominated flow, which is of interest for applications such as natural gas transportation. A closed-flow loop, driven by a novel internal fan, enables continuous observation of hydrate particle behavior in a gas flow. The experimental setup allows the production and insertion of HFC134a gas hydrate particles with diameters of 10-50 μm into the gas flow loop via a bypass loop. The performance curve of the internal fan is validated, and its suitability for achieving the required flow speed (5 m/s) is demonstrated...

Chloroplast-actin (cp-actin) filaments are crucial for light-induced chloroplast movement, and appear in the front region of moving chloroplasts when visualized using GFP-mouse Talin. They are short and thick, exist between a chloroplast and the plasma membrane, and move actively and rapidly compared to cytoplasmic long actin filaments that run through a cell. The average period during which a cp-actin filament was observed at the same position was less than 0.5 s. The average lengths of the cp-actin filaments calculated from those at the front region of the moving chloroplast and those around the chloroplast periphery after stopping the movement were almost the same, approximately 0...

Patients with advanced cancer are frequently burdened with a severe sensation of fatigue called cancer-related fatigue (CRF). CRF is induced at various stages and treatments, such as cachexia and chemotherapy, and reduces the overall survival of patients. Objective and quantitative assessment of CRF could contribute to the diagnosis and prediction of treatment efficacy. However, such studies have not been intensively performed, particularly regarding metabolic profiles. Here, we conducted plasma metabolomics of 15 patients with urological cancer...

The gut microbiome is implicated in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and prenatal androgen exposure is involved in the development of PCOS in later life. Our previous study of a mouse model of PCOS induced by prenatal dihydrotestosterone (DHT) exposure showed that the reproductive phenotype of PCOS appears from puberty, followed by the appearance of the metabolic phenotype after young adulthood, while changes in the gut microbiota was already apparent before puberty. To determine whether the prenatal or postnatal nurturing environment primarily contributes to these changes that characterize prenatally androgenized (PNA) offspring, we used a cross-fostering model to evaluate the effects of changes in the postnatal early-life environment of PNA offspring on the development of PCOS-like phenotypes and alterations in the gut microbiota in later life...

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an amino acid that has a role as a signaling molecule. In plants, its involvement in stress responses is widely investigated. A newly developed method of quantification of GABA is described in this chapter. The assay kit consisting of three bacterial enzymes enables easy but accurate measurement of GABA (~200 mg/mL) based on the serial enzymatic reaction leading to dye formation. The method was successfully applied to measure the GABA content in several plant tissues.

The conventional intracarotid amobarbital (Wada) test has been used to assess memory function in patients being considered for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery. Minimally invasive approaches that target the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and spare neocortex are increasingly used, but a knowledge gap remains in how to assess memory and language risk from these procedures. We retrospectively compared results of two versions of the Wada test, the intracarotid artery (ICA-Wada) and posterior cerebral artery (PCA-Wada) approaches, with respect to predicting subsequent memory and language outcomes, particularly after stereotactic laser amygdalohippocampotomy (SLAH)...

Α sensitive and selective derivatization and inject method for the quantification of intact nandrolone phase II oxo-metabolites was developed and validated using liquid chromatography - (tandem high resolution) mass spectrometry (LC-MS/(HRMS)). For the derivatization, Girard's reagent T (GRT) was used directly in natural urine samples and the analysis of the metabolites of interest was performed by direct injection into LC-MS/(HRMS) system operating in positive ionization mode. Derivatization enabled the efficient detection of nandrolone oxo-metabolites, while at the same time producing intense product ions under collision-induced dissociation (CID) conditions that are related to metabolites of the steroid backbone and not to the conjugated moieties...
