Lemierre's syndrome (LS) is a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of an oropharyngeal infection, resulting in the presence of septic thrombophlebitis in the internal jugular vein. This condition is most commonly caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum , with a prevalence of one case per million people annually. LS is more commonly seen in adolescents or young adults, but it can also occur in children. Despite its rare occurrence, prompt diagnosis of this condition and the initiation of treatment are crucial to preventing fatal complications...

This case report illustrates a unique presentation of Lemierre's syndrome precipitated by Fusobacterium necrophorum . This case report describes a 20-year-old patient who developed Lemierre's syndrome secondary to a shoulder hematoma and neck abscess with multiple systemic complications in the absence of tonsillitis or oropharyngeal infection. Two weeks prior to presentation, the patient sustained a right shoulder injury and contracted COVID-19. Due to his Lemierre's syndrome, he developed right internal jugular vein and subclavian vein thrombosis, septic lung emboli, right sided Horner's syndrome, disseminated intravascular coagulation, pelvic collection, septic arthritis of pubic symphysis and osteomyelitis of the right pubic bone, and proximal left femoral shaft...

Long considered a "forgotten disease" of a bygone era, the apparent reemergence of Lemierre syndrome highlights the need for awareness of this rare condition to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment. Lemierre syndrome should be suspected in young adults presenting with a chest or neck infection and requires prolonged antibiotic therapy, surgical drainage of collections, and often anticoagulation.

Group A Streptococcus (GAS) in the setting of postpartum endometritis can have severe and life-threatening complications. We report a rare case of septic pulmonary emboli that we surmised to have originated from septic pelvic thrombosis in the setting of GAS toxic shock syndrome (TSS) secondary to postpartum endometritis and intrauterine demise. Although the patient had source control with hysterectomy, she continued to have new septic emboli to the lungs seen on CT scans. CT scan of the pelvis demonstrated several filling defects in the renal and pelvic veins...

We report avian cervical vertebrae from the Quercy fissure fillings in France, which are densely covered with villi-like tubercles. Two of these vertebrae stem from a late Eocene site, another lacks exact stratigraphic data. Similar cervical vertebrae occur in avian species from Eocene fossils sites in Germany and the United Kingdom, but the new fossils are the only three-dimensionally preserved vertebrae with pronounced surface sculpturing. So far, the evolutionary significance of this highly bizarre morphology, which is unknown from extant birds, remained elusive, and even a pathological origin was considered...

BACKGROUND: Given the widespread prevalence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), oral and neck examinations tend to be avoided in patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. This might delay the diagnosis of conditions such as Lemierre's syndrome, which involves symptoms resembling COVID-19-related throat manifestations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old man without any underlying conditions was diagnosed with COVID-19 7 days before presentation. He was admitted to another hospital 1 day before presentation with severe COVID-19 and suspected bacterial pneumonia; accordingly, he was started on treatment with remdesivir and meropenem...

Lemierre's syndrome refers to septic thrombophlebitis caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia. The incidence of Lemierre's syndrome has risen over the past two decades. This report describes a case of a 31-year-old woman presenting with multifocal pneumonia and uncomplicated parapneumonic effusion, considered as COVID-19 pneumonia initially, then found to have Lemierre's syndrome with Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia and right internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis. Her condition improved after four weeks of antibiotics without anticoagulation...

Lemierre's syndrome (LS) is a severe infectious disease that can lead to the formation of neck abscesses and thrombosis. LS may be an indication for surgery; however, there are few reports on the physical therapy approaches used in patients with LS. A male patient in his 20s reported atelectasis and limited range of motion in the neck after resection of a deep neck abscess on the left side of the neck caused by LS. Thrombophlebitis was also observed around the neck lesion, indicating the risk of pulmonary embolism...

Background The underlying mechanisms of thrombosis in Lemierre's syndrome and other septic thrombophlebitis are incompletely understood. Therefore, in this case-control study we aimed to generate hypotheses on its pathogenesis by studying the plasma proteome in patients with these conditions. Methods All patients with Lemierre's syndrome in the Skåne Region, Sweden were enrolled prospectively during 2017-2021 as cases. Age-matched patients with other severe infections were enrolled as controls. Patient plasma samples were analyzed using label-free data-independent acquisition liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry...

A 20-year-old male presented to the Emergency Department with pyrexia, dyspnoea, chest pain and haemoptysis. Cavitating lung lesions were noted on chest X-ray and the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit where he was intubated and ventilated. Routine investigations including serial cultures did not provide an aetiological diagnosis. As such, a CT-guided lung biopsy was carried out and 16S rDNA PCR was undertaken on the sample. This identified Fusobacterium necrophorum as the causative organism. The patient was treated for Lemierre's syndrome and successfully discharged from hospital...

RATIONALE: Septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein also known as Lemierre syndrome occurs secondary to an oropharyngeal infection often leading to septic embolisms to distant sites. Anaerobic gram-negative bacillus, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Fusobacterium necrophorum are commonly isolated organisms. Fusobacterium species has also been reported to complicate an intra-abdominal infection leading to septic thrombophlebitis of portal vein also known as pylephlebitis or abdominal variant of lemierre syndrome...

Lemierre's syndrome, also known as anaerobic post-anginal septicemia, necrobacillosis, and the "forgotten disease," is a rare manifestation. It is often presented with sepsis, sore throat, fever, neck pain, internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis/thrombosis, and septic emboli. The bacteria that are usually associated with the disease are Fusobacterium species, but it is also associated with Staphylococcus , Streptococcus , and other bacterial species. The diagnosis of Lemierre's syndrome is made based on evidence of septic thrombophlebitis, preceding oropharyngeal infection, and positive culture...

Neck infections are common in children, though the clinical presentation is often vague and nonspecific. Therefore, imaging plays a key role in identifying the site and extent of infections, evaluating for potentially drainable collections, and assessing for airway and vascular complications. This review focuses on imaging features associated with common and characteristic neck infections in children to include tonsillar, retropharyngeal, and otomastoid infections; suppurative adenopathy; superimposed inflammation or infection of congenital cystic lesions; and Lemierre syndrome...

Lemierre's syndrome is a rare, life-threatening complication of an acute oropharyngeal infection. It is generally characterised by pharyngitis secondary to Fusobacterium necrophorum , causing thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and sepsis, with subsequent formation of septic emboli that can rapidly spread to different organ sites. The condition is associated with high mortality if treatment with antibiotics is delayed, and recent evidence suggests that patients are at significant risk of in-hospital morbidity and long-term neurological sequelae...
