BACKGROUND: It is extremely rare for Lyme borreliosis to present solely with features of increased intracranial pressure. The treatment of pediatric Lyme neuroborreliosis with oral versus intravenous antibiotics remains controversial. METHODS: Case report and literature review. RESULTS: A 13-year-old male presented with five days of binocular diplopia, several weeks of headache, and a history of multiple tick bites six weeks prior...

Dear Editors, A 37-year-old man from a Lyme disease-endemic area presented with a one-week old rapidly expanding rash on his right calf. He lacked other comorbidities or symptoms such as fever, weakness, lack of appetite, or joint pain, but recalled removing a tick from the same region three weeks earlier. Inspection revealed a round, bluish-red erythematous patch with a central clearing (Figure 1). The patient experienced no discomfort, but the rash was warm and faded easily when palpated. Dermatoscopic inspection revealed collarette-shaped white scales encircling the punctum of the tick bite in the center (Figure 2, left inset)...

PURPOSE: The demand for eye care is growing continuously. We created a triage survey system, based on categories of severity, to optimize first line patient care in an ophthalmology emergency department. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out from July 7th, 2021 to October 10th, 2021. During this period, a survey was taken by patients upon arrival to the emergency department. Patients completed the survey by ticking boxes that best fitted their situation...

Bovine tropical theileriosis is one of the potentially fatal disease of dairy cattle, which is caused by hemoparasite Theleria annulata . About seven years old cross-bred cow was presented with complaint of pyrexia, inappetance, lacrimation and ocular swelling since last 5 days. The clinical examination showed elevated rectal temperature (39.4 °C), mild enlarged pre-scapular lymph nodes, bilateral bulging of temporal fossa, protruded pale and icteric conjunctivae of the eyes with lacrimation and presence of ticks on body...

In 2020, adult hard ticks (males and females) were collected from great horned owls [Bubo virginianus (Gmelin, 1788)] in the coastal region in southern Brazil. The engorged females were allowed to oviposit in the laboratory and hatched larvae could be obtained. Analyses of the external morphology of the adult ticks revealed that they represent a new species, which was named Amblyomma monteiroae n. sp. Partial sequences of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene and the nuclear second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) were generated from a male and a female...

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease after a tick bite often presents as erythema migrans, yet less frequent variants of this disease, such as Borrelia lymphocytoma, multiple erythema migrans and neuroborreliosis, are also seen occasionally. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a tick-bitten child who first presented with an indistinct macular erythema around the left eye and a more distinct macular erythema on and around the left ear. The next day, she developed a facial palsy...

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of Lyme disease (LD) in Canada and the United States has risen over the last decade, nearing 480,000 cases each year. Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative agent of LD, is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected tick, resulting in flu-like symptoms and often a characteristic bull's-eye rash. In more severe cases, disseminated bacterial infection can cause arthritis, carditis and neurological impairments. Currently, no vaccine is available for the prevention of LD in humans...

PURPOSE: Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is an allergy to non-primate mammalian carbohydrate (galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose) which may cause anaphylaxis. Allergic patients must avoid ophthalmic drugs containing animal-derived ingredients. OBSERVATIONS: We report a 59-year-old non-Hispanic white woman who was referred for a glaucoma evaluation. She had been diagnosed with AGS after a tick bite in 2017. Ophthalmic exam revealed potentially occludable, narrow iridocorneal angles and laser iridotomy was recommended...

PURPOSE: The objective was to study the positivity of the Weil-Felix test (WFT) in epidemic retinitis (ER) during the course of the disease. METHODS: This is a retrospective, observational case series of patients diagnosed with ER and presented to a tertiary eye care hospital in south India. Patients with positive WFT at the presentation, and who underwent a follow-up WFT during or after the resolution of ER were studied from September 2019 to March 2022. Patient's demographics, timings of clinical presentation and resolution, and investigation details with a special focus on WFT positivity and its duration were noted...

Hoogstraal and Kim (1985) proposed from morphology, three groups of Haemaphysalis subgenera: (i) the "structurally advanced"; (ii) the "structurally intermediate"; and (iii) the "structurally primitive" subgenera. Nuclear gene phylogenies, however, did not indicate monophyly of these morphological groups but alas, only two mitochondrial (mt) genomes from the "structurally intermediate" subgenera had been sequenced. The phylogeny of Haemaphysalis has not yet been resolved. We aimed to resolve the phylogeny of the genus Haemaphysalis, with respect to the subgenus Alloceraea...

Background and objective Diagnosis of early Lyme disease (LD) often relies on clinical recognition of the skin lesion, erythema migrans (EM), a diagnostic sign of disease when laboratory testing is insensitive. Because EM can present in morphologically distinct forms, its recognition by clinicians can be challenging. This study aimed to characterize the clinical spectrum of lesions in patients presenting with suspected early LD in an ambulatory care setting to identify features that might help clinicians to be better prepared to recognize EM lesions...

Bovine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Babesia . Babesia bigemina is one of the most prevalent and economically important parasite species that infects cattle because of its impact on the meat and milk production industry. Effective disease control strategies should include detection of reservoir animals and early and specific pathogen detection using rapid, economical, sensitive, and specific detection techniques. The loop-mediated isothermal amplification technique (LAMP) is a one-step molecular reaction that amplifies DNA sequences with high sensitivity and specificity under isothermal conditions and requires no special equipment...
