Significant increases in remotely sensed vegetation indices in the northern latitudes since the 1980s have been detected and attributed at annual and growing season scales. However, we presently lack a systematic understanding of how vegetation responds to asymmetric seasonal environmental changes. In this study, we first investigated trends in the seasonal mean leaf area index (LAI) at northern latitudes (north of 30°N) between 1982 and 2009 using three remotely sensed long-term LAI data sets. The most significant LAI increases occurred in summer (0...

INTRODUCTION: Nonunion is a common complication (15%) of hindfoot and ankle arthrodesis. Autograft can improve the fusion rate because of its osteoconductive, osteoinductive and osteogenic properties. However, autograft harvesting is a source of morbidity. One alternative is to combine allograft with demineralized bone matrix (DBM) and iliac bone marrow aspirate (BMA). This combination graft has similar biological properties to healthy bone. When used alone, allograft has osteoconductive and sometimes structural properties...

No studies have examined the transplantation of a bone marrow aspirate (BMA) containing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) combined with human parathyroid hormone 1-34 (hPTH1-34) administration. Therefore, we evaluated the feasibility and efficacy of autologous BMA transplantation combined with hPHT1-34 administration in a bone necrosis model. The metatarsal bones of rabbits were necrotized using liquid nitrogen, and the rabbits received a BMA transplantation or saline injection followed by hPTH1-34 (30 μg/kg) or saline administration three times per week (n = 3-4 per group)...

A rationally-designed library of ternary siRNA polyplexes was developed and screened for gene silencing efficacy in vitro and in vivo with the goal of overcoming both cell-level and systemic delivery barriers. [2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (DMAEMA) was homopolymerized or copolymerized (50mol% each) with butyl methacrylate (BMA) from a reversible addition - fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) chain transfer agent, with and without pre-conjugation to polyethylene glycol (PEG). Both single block polymers were tested as core-forming units, and both PEGylated, diblock polymers were screened as corona-forming units...

Extrusion is an increasingly used type of processing which combined with enzymatic action could open extended possibilities for obtaining clean label modified flours. In this study, native and extruded maize flours were modified using branching enzyme (B) and a combination of branching enzyme and maltogenic α-amylase (BMA) in order to modulate their hydrolysis properties. The microstructure, pasting properties, in vitro starch hydrolysis and resistant starch content of the flours were investigated. Whereas BMA treatment led to greater number of holes on the granule surface in native samples, B and BMA extruded samples showed rougher surfaces with cavities...

BACKGROUND: Childhood acute leukemia is traditionally diagnosed from a bone marrow aspirate (BMA). New-onset acute leukemia patients do not always have visible circulating blasts in the peripheral blood (PB) at diagnosis. While the role of bone marrow flow cytometry for the diagnosis of acute leukemia is well established, the utility of PB flow cytometry (PBFC) is unknown. We performed a single-institution retrospective analysis to compare PBFC versus BMA in establishing or excluding a diagnosis of childhood acute leukemia...

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective, multicenter, medical record review and independent analysis of computed tomographic scans was performed in 46 patients to determine radiographic arthrodesis rates after 1-segment, 2-segment, or 3-segment instrumented posterolateral fusions (PLF) using autograft, bone marrow aspirate (BMA), and a nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite bone void filler (nHA). OBJECTIVE: To determine the radiographic arthrodesis rates after instrumented lumbar PLF using local autograft, BMA, and nHA...

PURPOSE: This prospective study was conducted to evaluate the bone regeneration capacity of synthetic hydroxyapatite mixed with autogenous bone marrow aspirate when used as a bone graft substitute in maxillo-mandibular osseous defects. METHODS: This study included nine patients with histopathalogically proven benign osteolytic lesions in maxilla and mandible that were treated with enucleation or marginal resection followed by bone marrow aspirate coated synthetic biphasic hydroxyapatite (hydroxyapatite and beta tricalcium phosphate) graft placement...

Peptides derived from the third Bcl-2 homology domain (BH3) renormalize apoptotic signaling by antagonizing prosurvival Bcl-2 family members. These potential peptide drugs exhibit therapeutic activities but are limited by barriers including short circulation half-lives and poor penetration into cells. A diblock polymeric micelle carrier for the BIM BH3 peptide was recently described that demonstrated antitumor activity in a B-cell lymphoma xenograft model [Berguig et al., Mol. Ther. 2015, 23, 907-917]. However, the disulfide linkage used to conjugate the BIM peptide was shown to have nonoptimal blood stability...

Bisindolylmaleimides, a series of derivatives of a PKC inhibitor staurosporine, exhibit potential as anti-cancer drugs and have received considerable attention in clinical trials. This study aims to investigate the effects of a bisindolylmaleimide alkaloid 155Cl (BMA-155Cl) with a novel structure on autophagy and apoptosis in human hepatocarcinoma HepG-2 cells in vitro and in vivo. The cell poliferation was assessed with a MTT assay. Autophagy was evaluated by MDC staining and TEM analysis. Apoptosis was investigated using Annexin V-FITC/PI and DAPI staining...

OBJECTIVES: Among bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family members, BMP-2 and BMP-9 have demonstrated potent osteoinductive potential. However, in vivo differences in their potential for bone regeneration remain unclear. The present study aimed to compare the effects of recombinant human (rh) BMP-2 and rhBMP-9 on bone formation in rat calvarial critical-size defects (CSD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight Wistar rats surgically received two calvarial defects bilaterally in each parietal bone...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the number of connective tissue progenitor cells (CTPs) and nucleated cells obtained during bone marrow aspiration (BMA) from the proximal humerus using either a fenestrated or a nonfenestrated trocar and determine differences in varying amounts of aspiration volume. The first hypothesis was that the number of CTPs extracted with the fenestrated trocar would be greater due to its potential to extract more cells through its fenestrations. The second hypothesis was that using consecutive aspirations with either trocar would provide a consistent number of CTPs and nucleated cells throughout the aspiration with no significant decrease of cells at the end...
