BACKGROUND: Iliac crest has long been the gold standard for lumbar fusion, but concerns over donor site morbidity have led to a wide variety of bone graft substitutes. Despite prolific research, a general consensus is yet to be reached on bone graft materials that lead to optimal fusion. PURPOSE: The purpose of this review is to evaluate the current literature for bone graft material options that maximize fusion rate in posterolateral lumbar fusion surgery. DESIGN: Systematic Review...

Unlike white and brown adipose tissues, the bone marrow adipocyte (BMA) exists in a microenvironment containing unique populations of hematopoietic and skeletal cells. To study this microenvironment at the sub-cellular level, we performed a three-dimensional analysis of the ultrastructure of the BMA niche with focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM). This revealed that BMAs display hallmarks of metabolically active cells including polarized lipid deposits, a dense mitochondrial network, and areas of endoplasmic reticulum...

BACKGROUND: Microfracture is commonly performed for cartilage repair but usually results in fibrocartilage. Microfracture augmented by autologous bone marrow concentrate (BMC) was previously shown to yield structurally superior cartilage repairs in an equine model compared with microfracture alone. The current study was performed to test the hypothesis that autologous BMC without concomitant microfracture improves cartilage repair compared with microfracture alone. METHODS: Autologous sternal bone marrow aspirate (BMA) was concentrated using a commercial system...

Infection with Renibacterium salmoninarum, the cause of Bacterial Kidney Disease (BKD) occurs in salmon populations in many locations, including the east coast of Canada. However, information about risk factors for BKD and their effects in the saltwater phase of the salmon aquaculture industry in the region is inadequate. We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study using industry health records in which BKD was recorded in New Brunswick, Canada, between 2006 and 2012. Several risk factors for BKD, such as stocking season, mortality percentage in the first four weeks, food conversion ratio (FCR), lice treatment, Bay Management Area (BMA), and production year were analyzed in a survival analysis using Cox proportional hazards models with cross-classified random effects to account for the structure of the data...

An adequate bone marrow aspirate is essential for a rapid diagnosis of acute leukaemia by multicolour flow cytometry enabling the simultaneous assessment of multiple antigens on the cell surface as well as intracellular or nuclear ones. In the context of acute leukaemia, it is important to have a diagnosis of the blasts lineage as soon as possible to decide the appropriate treatment. This is sometimes delayed due to difficulties in of obtaining a bone marrow aspirate due to a "dry tap". In this study we evaluated retrospectively cell markers results by flow cytometry of unfixed bone marrow trephines of 65 patients with leukaemia at diagnosis and including a few after treatment...

Background: The purpose of the work was to assess the contribution to diagnosis and/or treatment (CDT) of bone marrow aspiration (BMA) in the critically ill patient. Methods: The retrospective study included 193 patients. On the basis of BMA findings, contribution to diagnosis was defined by one of four previously unestablished diagnoses (maturation arrest of granulocyte precursors, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, hematological malignancy, marrow infiltration with cancer cells) and to treatment as the initiation or withdrawal of a specific treatment including the decision to forgo life-sustaining treatment (DFLST)...

BACKGROUND: Nearly all paediatric patients require deep sedation when undergoing bone marrow aspiration (BMA). We analyzed the data from our protocols documented in a standardised procedure for bone marrow puncture over a period of 2 years. METHODS: Our standard included the documentation of personal data as well as vital parameters. In addition, we documented all medications administered, potential complications and required intervention measures, as necessary...

OBJECTIVE: How adverse outcomes and complaints are managed may significantly impact on physician well-being and practice. We aimed to investigate how depression, anxiety and defensive medical practice are associated with doctors actual and perceived support, behaviour of colleagues and process issues regarding how complaints investigations are carried out. DESIGN: A survey study. Respondents were classified into three groups: no complaint, recent/current complaint (within 6 months) or past complaint...

Bone marrow adipocytes (BMAs) derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are an active and significant element of the bone marrow microenvironment. They are involved in metabolic functions, complex interactions with other stromal cells, and in the development and progression of tumours. Currently, there is little data regarding the role of BMAs in haematological malignancies. Due to this, we have attempted to characterise the BMAs in these malignancies in terms of quantity and morphology. Our study included 30 patients aged 22-76 with myelo- (n=17) and lymphoproliferative malignancies (n=13), both with and without bone marrow infiltration...

BACKGROUND: Northeastern British Columbia (Canada) is an area of intense hydraulic fracturing for unconventional natural gas exploitation. There have been multiple reports of air and water contamination by volatile organic compounds in the vicinity of gas wells. Although these chemicals are known developmental toxicants, no biomonitoring effort has been carried out in the region. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate gestational exposure to benzene and toluene in the Peace River Valley, Northeastern British Columbia (Canada)...

Purpose To update, in collaboration with Cancer Care Ontario (CCO), key recommendations of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) guideline on the role of bone-modifying agents (BMAs) in metastatic breast cancer. This focused update addressed the new data on intervals between dosing and the role of BMAs in control of bone pain. Methods A joint ASCO-CCO Update Committee conducted targeted systematic literature reviews to identify relevant studies. Results The Update Committee reviewed three phase III noninferiority trials of dosing intervals, one systematic review and meta-analysis of studies of de-escalation of BMAs, and two randomized trials of BMAs in control of pain secondary to bone metastases...

Inferring genetic networks from genome-wide expression data is extremely demanding computationally. We have developed fastBMA, a distributed, parallel, and scalable implementation of Bayesian model averaging (BMA) for this purpose. fastBMA also includes a computationally efficient module for eliminating redundant indirect edges in the network by mapping the transitive reduction to an easily solved shortest-path problem. We evaluated the performance of fastBMA on synthetic data and experimental genome-wide time series yeast and human datasets...
