We describe for the first time a case of lateral femoral condyle fracture following a fall in a 13-year-old child that was reduced arthroscopically using a probe. It was definitively fixed with 0 vicryl sutures in a cruciate pattern after being initially stabilised with 1.5-mm Kirschner wires. Four beath pins carrying sutures were drilled at four opposing quadrants through the reduced fragment into the femur. The sutures were then tied on the lateral cortex of the femur. After fixation, the child was kept non-weight bearing for 6 weeks, partial weight bearing from 6 weeks to 12 weeks and then full weight bearing thereafter...

Invasive species are a significant threat to global biodiversity, but our understanding of how invasive species impact native communities across space and time remains limited. Based on observations in an old field in Southeast Michigan spanning 35 years, our study documents significant impacts of habitat change, likely driven by the invasion of the shrub, Elaeagnus umbellata, on the nest distribution patterns and population demographics of a native ant species, Formica obscuripes. Landcover change in aerial photos indicates that E...

As highlighted in a recent editorial, the ageing population and burden of frailty amongst those aged 60 years and older represents an impending challenge for individuals and health care systems globally (Smith & Kydd 2017). As frailty is largely considered a geriatric syndrome, research has primarily occurred within elderly community dwelling populations (Fried et al. 2001). However, it is important to highlight that not all older people are frail; and conversely not all younger people are non-frail. With frailty research expanding its scope beyond geriatrics over the last 2 decades, our understanding of this syndrome and its complexities has progressed...

Loneliness in later life is a common problem with poor health outcomes. However, interventions to prevent or ameliorate loneliness have a weak evidence base. The views of older people experiencing or at risk of loneliness in the community are important in identifying features of potential support, but have been little studied. Twenty-eight community dwelling people, aged 65 and over who reported being 'lonely much of the time' or identified as lonely from the de Jong Gierveld six-item loneliness scale in a larger study, participated in in-depth interviews, between June 2013 and May 2014...

Transmembrane C-X-C chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) and its ligand C-X-C motif chemokine 12 (CXCL12) came into focus in many solid cancers, allowing a more fundamental diagnostic and therapeutic approach by modulating the immune response against cancer cells. CXCR4 and CXCL12 mediate cell proliferation, migration, and metastatic outgrowth in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and are strongly associated with cancer recurrence and patient survival. Despite recent advances in molecular imaging and cancer therapy in lymphoma using CXCL12 analogues, clinical trials evaluating the diagnostic and therapeutic impact on HNSCC are missing...

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) are frequent causes of diarrhoea in infants and in young mammals by inducing attaching effacing (AE) lesions of the intestinal epithelium. EPEC bacteria have also been implicated in cases of porcine post-weaning diarrhoea but their pathogenicity for conventional weaned pigs remains less elucidated. This present study investigates differences in pathogenic potential and virulence genotypes of intestinal and faecal isolates of EPEC from newly-weaned pigs. For this we inoculated ligated ileal loops of four weeks old weaned pigs to assess EPEC adherence to enterocytes by histology and immunohistology...

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about how to design serious videogames for children. The purpose of this article is to describe how behavior change techniques promoting self-regulation were incorporated into a serious videogame to help children consume more fruits and vegetables (FVs) and the extent to which these techniques were used by players. A secondary goal is to contribute to the body of scientific knowledge regarding how to design effective serious videogames for children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This research examines the game play data from an effective 10-episode online serious videogame promoting FV consumption to preadolescent children in the United States (roughly 9-11-year-olds)...
