OBJECTIVES: Previous studies demonstrated that preconditioning with argon gas provided a marked reduction in inflammation and apoptosis and increased myocardial contractility in the setting of acute myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion (IR). There is substantial evidence that myocardial IR injury following cardioplegic arrest is associated with the enhancement of apoptosis and inflammation, which is considered to play a role in cardiac functional impairment. Therefore, the present study was designed to clarify whether preconditioning with argon gas enhances recovery of cardiac function following cardioplegic arrest...

Plasmanylethanolamine desaturase (E.C. introduces the 1-prime double bond into plasmalogens, one of the most abundant phospholipids in the human body. This labile membrane enzyme has not been purified and its coding sequence is unknown. Previous assays for this enzyme used radiolabeled substrates followed by multistep processing. We describe here a straight-forward method for the quantification of plasmanylethanolamine desaturase in enzyme incubation mixtures using pyrene-labeled substrates and reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection...

Recently the first pheromone of a marine diatom was identified to be the diketopiperazine (S,S)-diproline. This compound facilitates attraction between mating partners in the benthic diatom Seminavis robusta. Interestingly, sexualized S. robusta cells are attracted to both the natural pheromone (S,S)-diproline as well as to its enantiomer (R,R)-diproline. Usually stereospecificity is a prerequisite for successful substrate-receptor interactions, and especially pheromone perception is often highly enantioselective...
