It has been demonstrated that the biological effector of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) is their secretome, which is composed of a heterogeneous pool of bioactive molecules, partially enclosed in extracellular vesicles (EVs). To defend against extracellular pathogens, plants primarily depend on cell-autonomous innate immunity due to the lack of the circulatory immune system including mobile immune cells. To extracellularly restrict or kill the pathogens, plant cells dump out antimicrobials.
