RATIONALE: Acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) is a rare subtype of acute myelogenous leukaemia. With advances in treatment regimens, namely, introduction of all-trans-retinoicacid, outcomes have drastically improved, its side effects should not be ignored. Mycosis fungoides is one of the side effects of all-trans-retinoicacid treatment, but it may also be a clinical manifestation before disease progression. However, it rarely appears and is easily overlooked. This leads to being easily misled during the treatment process, affecting the treatment plan, and resulting in adverse consequences...

This report details a case of a 16-year-old African American girl who presented with a two-year history of white spicules on her face without associated symptoms, including pruritus or pain. On physical examination, there were many 1-2 mm discreet white to yellow filamentous spicules on the mid and lower face. Histopathology scrapings showed cornified cells and calcification consistent with sebaceous filaments. Sebaceous filaments are a rare condition that presents as white-to-yellow spicules distributed in highly sebaceous areas on the face...

Acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) is an aggressive type of leukaemia associated with severe coagulopathy and haemorrhage. Treatment with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) combined with arsenic trioxide (ATO) therapy is life-saving and induces excellent remission rates. However, ATRA can, on rare occasions, cause pseudotumour cerebri, which is characterised by an elevation in intracranial pressure without evidence of infection or vascular or structural abnormalities. We describe a case of pseudotumour cerebri that was precipitated by ATRA therapy...

The goal of the current study was to explore the potential benefits of Tretinoin (Tre) fatty acid vesicles (Tre-FAV) as a prospective antipsoriatic topical delivery system. This promising system can counteract the drug challenges in terms of its extremely low aqueous solubility, instability, skin irritation, and serious systemic adverse effects. Tre-loaded fatty acid vesicles were successfully developed and entirely characterised. The selected formulation was investigated for in vitro release, ex vivo skin retention and psoriasis efficacy studies...

Tattoos are a form of decorative body art in which pigment dyes of different colors are inoculated into the skin. It is estimated that 15-25% of general population has one or more tattoos (1), and the reasons for the popularity of this procedure may include greater social acceptance, aesthetic appeal, or perhaps the option of using laser removal techniques to eliminate unwanted tattoos. Even though modern professional tattoos are usually performed in sterile conditions, complications still occur, and with increasing numbers of people getting tattoos, the incidence of tattoo-associated side-effects presenting to dermatologists, which may be as high as 2%, is likely to increase (2)...

Acne vulgaris, a prevalent skin disorder among teenagers and young adults, can have numerous psychological consequences. Topical treatment of acne would be advantageous by reducing the risk of systemic adverse drug reactions. However, the major challenge would be skin penetration through the stratum corneum. Therefore, during this study, tretinoin (TRT) and bicalutamide (BCT) loaded niosomes with follicular targeting potential were fabricated through the thin film hydration technique. Formulation optimization was performed using the Design-Expert software and optimum formulation was characterized in terms of particle size, zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy, drug loading, and differential scanning calorimetry...

The present study investigated the effect of tretinoin (2,4-difluoro-phenyl) triazole (TDFPT) on the growth and proliferation of Kyse-270 and EC9706 esophageal carcinoma cells and explored the underlying mechanism. The results demonstrated that TDFPT treatment of Kyse-270 and EC9706 cells led to a dose-dependent reduction in cell proliferation. Colony formation was significantly (p < .05) reduced in Kyse-270 and EC9706 cells on treatment with various concentrations of TDFPT. In TDFPT-treated Kyse-270 and EC9706 cells, the expression of Bcl-2 protein showed a remarkable decrease, whereas the level of Bax protein was found to be higher compared with the control cells...

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a benign papular skin infection caused by Molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV). Over the past 30 years, the incidence of MK has continued to increased association with sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The incidence of MC in HIV patients is quite high at 5-8%. Until now there is no standard therapy used for the treatment of MC in patients with HIV. In HIV patients, anti retro viral therapy (ARV) is the main therapy with several other additional therapies such as cantaridin, chemical peeling agents such as glycolic acid (20-70%) and trichloroacetic acid (20-100%), cryosurgery, electrosurgery, incision, lactic acid, laser surgery, podophyllin, retinoic acid, and urea...

Microencapsulation has received extensive attention because of its various applications. Since its inception in the 1940s, this technology has been used across several areas, including the chemical, food, and pharmaceutical industries. Over-the-counter skin products often contain ingredients that readily and unevenly degrade upon contact with the skin. Enclosing these substances within a silica shell can enhance their stability and better regulate their delivery onto and into the skin. Silica microencapsulation uses silica as the matrix material into which ingredients can be embedded to form microcapsules...

Periungual warts are frequently encountered in the field of dermatology. Here, we describe the case of a 69-year-old individual who presented with hand warts. The wart growth extended to the finger stump, resulting in a soft tissue defect on the fingertip of the right thumb. A treatment approach involving superficial x-ray therapy in combination with tretinoin was employed to address this finding. The warts disappeared after completing 26 days of the treatment regimen. Fingertip soft tissue defects due to periungual warts are a rare occurrence in clinical settings...

BACKGROUND: Melasma is a chronic hypermelanosis of the skin that affects approximately 1% of the global population, predominantly affects women, and is more prevalent in skin of color. Melasma is a common driver for patients with skin of color to seek out a dermatologist for treatment, and ensuring the right approach for these patients is important because some treatments may be associated with adverse side effects. Because of the chronicity of the disease and established psychosocial and emotional impacts, there is a large need to ensure care follows the best available evidence on the treatment of patients with melasma...
