Gallbladder cancer is an aggressive tumor. Its incidence varies according to geography. Surgery is the standard treatment for localized stage but there is no standard treatment in metastatic or locally advanced disease. Because of the rarity of bile tract cancer (BTC) and gallblader carcinoma (GBC), most studies have grouped all BTC and GBC together, and there are very few GBC-specific studies. In addition, there is a paucity of randomized controlled studies in this disease with small numbers of patients and inclusion bias...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The postoperative survival rate is dependent on the invasive depth of the gallbladder carcinoma. When this carcinoma has invaded beyond the subserosal layer, lymph node and adjacent organ involvement is found in a large number of patients, and long-term survival cannot be achieved. The aim of this study is to establish a surgical strategy for advanced gallbladder carcinoma according to the invasive depth. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 44 patients with the gallblader carcinoma...

AIM: To establish the effectiveness of radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of metastatic hepatic lesions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 104 pts with 231 metastases were treated with RFA. The volume of achieved destruction was assessed using imaging method and cytology. Patients were followed-up for 1-37 months. RESULTS: 87.3% of metastases < 3.0 cm, 50.9% of tumors sized 3.0-5.0 cm and 14.3% of metastases > 5.0 cm were completely destroyed...

AIM: To examine the relationship between cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) overexpression and p53 accumulation in gallbladder carcinoma and its precursor lesions. METHODS: Sixty-eight gallbladder tissue samples comprising 14 cases of normal gallblader epithelium, 27 cases of dysplasia (11 low-grade dyplasia and 16 high-grade dysplasia) and 27 adenocarcinomas were evaluated by immunohistochemistry for COX-2 expression and p53 accumulation. The relationship among COX-2 expression, p53 accumulation and clinicopathological characteristics was analysed...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this prospective study was to analyze the risk of liver resection in unselected patients. PATIENTS AND METHOD: From 1990 to 2000, 437 consecutive hepatectomies were performed in our center. Most frequent indications were liver metastases (n = 288), hepatocellular carcinoma (n = 62), Klatskin tumor (n = 17), gallblader carcinoma (n = 139) and other malignant tumors (n = 6). The indication was a benign tumor in 51 patients. In 357 cases the liver parenchyma was normal, 51 patients had an underlying cirrhosis and 17 patients had an obstructive jaundice...
