A type of MCM-41 supported dicationic imidazolium ionic liquid nanocatalyst has been synthesized and found to be competent for the synthesis of 2-oxazolidinones through the sustainable chemical conversion of CO2 with aziridines. It was shown that the highest efficiency was achieved in the cycloaddition of a series of aziridines and CO2 in the presence of a catalytic amount of the solid catalyst MCM-41@ILLaCl4 under mild conditions. Merits of this meticulously designed protocol are the use of a novel supported ionic liquid catalyst, the easy work-up process, good to excellent yields, a short reaction time, and purification without column chromatography...

A series of imidazolium-based symmetrical and asymmetrical dicationic ionic liquids (DcILs) with alkyl spacers of different length and with [FeCl3 Br]- as counter ion have been synthesized. The synthesized DcILs are characterized by using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry, along with single-crystal XRD analysis. Physicochemical properties such as solubility, thermal stability and magnetic susceptibility are also measured. These compounds show low melting points, good solubility in water and organic solvents, thermal stability, and paramagnetism...

We synthesized various phosphonium- and ammonium-based ionic liquids (ILs), using benzenesulfonate (BS) and 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (MBS) to establish the criteria for designing an ideal draw solute in a forward osmosis (FO) system. Additionally, the effects of monocationic, dicationic, and anionic species on FO performance were studied. Monocationic compounds ([P4444 ][BS], [P4444 ][MBS], [N4444 ][BS], and [N4444 ][MBS]) were obtained in one step via anion exchange. Dicationic compounds ([(P4444 )2 ][BS], [(P4444 )2 ][MBS], [(N4444 )2 ][BS], and [(N4444 )2 ][MBS]) were prepared in two steps via a Menshutkin SN2 reaction and anion exchange...

A few studies on CO2 capture using dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) show that they are more promising absorbents for CO2 capture than monocationic ILs (MILs). Ion-ion, ion-CO2 and DIL molecule-CO2 interactions are important for understanding the performance-structure-property relationships for the rational design of DILs for CO2 capture applications. However, the role of these interactions in determining CO2 solubility in DILs is unclear. In this study, we used DFT methods to understand these interactions in three selected DILs)considering the effects of alkyl side chain length and symmetry in cations (by exploring different aspects, such as the electronic and geometrical structures, topological properties and the strength and nature of interactions, charge transfer, etc...

Ionic liquids (ILs) are widely applied in many bioprocesses involving microorganisms due to their unique properties. In this work, the toxicity of imidazolium and pyrrolidinium ionic liquids towards E. coli., a bacterium for which there are limited toxicity data in the literature, was determined. For its simplicity, the nephelometry method was used to estimate ionic liquid toxicity values. The influence of the cation and the alkyl chain length of the cation and anion was analysed. Pyrrolidinium cations were seen to be less toxic than imidazolium cations, while an increase in the alkyl chain length of both pyrrolidinium and imidazolium cations increased the toxicity...
