Regeneration of skeletal muscles is limited in cases of volumetric muscle loss and muscle degenerative diseases. Therefore, there is a critical need for developing strategies that provide cellular and structural support for skeletal muscle regeneration. In the present work, a bioengineered cell niche composed of mechanically competent aligned polyester fiber scaffolds is developed to mimic the oriented muscle fiber microenvironment by electrospinning poly(lactide- co -glycolide) (PLGA) using a custom-designed rotating collector with interspaced parallel blades...

Imaging modalities play a crucial role in the management of suspected COVID-19 patients. Before reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test results are positive, 60-93% of patients have positive chest computed tomographic (CT) findings consistent with COVID-19. We report a case of positive lung ultrasound findings consistent with COVID-19 in a woman with an initially negative RT-PCR result. The lung ultrasound-imaging findings were present between the negative and subsequent positive RT-PCR tests and correlated with CT findings...

BACKGROUND: Cystic Fibrosis (CF), affecting functional exercise capacity generally measured by submaximal exercise test such as 6min walk test, is a progressive, autosomal recessive and metabolic disorder. Three-axis accelerometers, which are used during gait, are an easy way to assess gait parameters in patients and healthy individuals. Gait parameters were significantly associated with clinical outcomes of COPD. However, the association between gait parameters and clinical outcomes in children with CF is unclear...

Obesity is one of the primary causes of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). To better understand how obesity impairs glucose-insulin homeostasis, we tracked fasting blood glucose and insulin levels and the key components of glucose-insulin homeostasis for 7 months in high fat diet (HFD; 45% fat) fed mice (n = 8). Every 2 weeks we measured body weight, fasting blood glucose and insulin levels, and estimated 5 key rate constants of glucose-insulin homeostasis using the methods established previously (Heliyon 3: e00310, 2017)...

Cloacal dysgenesis sequence occurs as a result of complete developmental failure of the urorectal septum. Typically, the sequence is featured by a smooth perineum, without any urethral, genital or anal openings. Its clinical manifestation differs throughout gestation. We report an interesting case of first trimester megacystis with associated umbilical cord abnormalities in a female fetus having cloacal dysgenesis sequence. This rare association reflecting high urinary pressure should first suggest urethral atresia...

Pesticides are highly hazardous chemicals for the environment and human health and their use in agriculture is constantly increasing. Although 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) ethane 4,4'-DDT was banned at developed countries, it is still one of the most dangerous of chemical due to accumulation in the environment. It is known that the toxicity of DDT affects some enzyme systems biochemically. The main motivation of this study is to develop an effective adsorbate for the removal DDT, which was chosen as a model hydrophobic pesticide, out of aqueous systems...

High-throughput sequencing produces an extraordinary amount of genomic data that is organized into a number of high-dimension datasets. Accordingly, visualization of genomic data has become essential for quality control, exploration, and data interpretation. The Variant Call Format (VCF) is a text file format generated during the variant calling process that contains genomic information and locations of variants in a group of sequenced samples. The current workflow for visualization of genomic variant data from VCF files requires use of a combination of existing tools...

OBJECTIVES: The faecal calprotectin (FC) test is widely used as a non-invasive method for identifying intestinal inflammation. A recent study suggested FC may help to diagnose gastrointestinal involvement of Behçet's syndrome (GIBS). We aimed to determine whether FC helps to distinguish active from inactive intestinal involvement in GIBS. METHODS: We tried to contact 70 GIBS patients registered in our tertiary multidisciplinary clinic. We prospectively collected faecal specimens and serum from 39 GIBS patients who gave informed consent assessing calprotectin and CRP levels followed by a colonoscopy...

Treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) continues to be a challenge. It was related to different factors, including alterations in the activity of brain dopaminergic system, which could be influenced by the dopamine-degrading enzyme, catechol- O -methyltransferase (COMT). Variants of the COMT gene have been extensively studied as risk factors for schizophrenia; however, their association with TRS has been poorly investigated. The aim of the present study was to determine the haplotypic and genotypic association of COMT rs4680 and rs4818 polymorphisms with the presence of TRS...
