Malignant External Otitis (MEO) usually occurring in middle aged or elderly diabetics is uncommonly seen in children and rarely in infants. Various studies done so far have proved that immunological disturbance is present in case of MEO, Eliashiv et al (1978) and Yust et al (1980) have proved that cell mediated immunity is depressed in cases of MEO occurring in diabetics. MEO occurring in a four month old grosslly immunadeficient infant is indeed a very rare presentation. Occurrence of MEO in immttuo-suppressed children, & in cases of AIDS, and conclusions of various immunological studies along with this presentaion emphasize the need of regular immuological work up in all cases of MEO...

We here report an autopsy case of meningovascular neurosyphilis associated with Fischer's plaques, a demyelinating lesion which is typical of the late stage general paresis. A Japanese male who was 59 years old at the time of death, developed personality change and dementia. He was clinically diagnosed as having neurosyphilis by serological tests of the blood and the cerebrospinal fluid. Despite the administration of Penicillin, psychiatric symptoms were unchanged and the patient died of aspiration pneumonia after the clinical course of 18 month...

The authors describe results of the investigation of the immunological status of 54 patients with nonspecific osteomyelitis of the spine (NOS). The immunological status of NOS patients was shown to be substantially different in the acute and chronic phases of the disease. Cases with lower T-lymphocyte activity, with a dysfunction of the phagocytic activity of lymphocytes prevail in the acute phase. Patients with septic forms of NOS have a hyperergic systemic inflammatory response which is accompanied by functional defectiveness of T-lymphocytes and excessive stimulation of the humoral link...

Recent mechanistic studies on the role of heat-shock proteins (HSPs) to induce innate and adaptive immune responses have resulted in conflicting reports. Whereas some groups reported that HSPs have direct immunological function, others emphasised the endotoxin contamination of HSP preparations and questioned the antigen-specificity of HSP vaccines. The present review will discuss these issues and suggest that HSPs have diverse and distinct immunological functions that could be superimposed on effects resulting from endotoxin contamination or misunderstood by using experimental procedures with inadequate controls...

Substrate induction of tryptophan pyrrolase in the liver of rats is inhibited by prior treatment of very young rats with tryptophan. This inhibition seems analogous to immunological tolerance, which can be produced by prior treatment with the antigen. The findings prowide support for an analogy between mechanisms of adaptive enzyme synthesis and those involved in adaptive immunity.
