OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical relevance of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) HAR1A and HAR1B expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: In this study, we enrolled 50 cases of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) without cirrhosis, 50 cases of CHB and liver cirrhosis (LC), and 100 cases of HBV and HCC. The expression profiles of lncRNA HAR1A and HAR1B were analyzed using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). RESULTS: The expression levels of HAR1A and HAR1B were significantly lower in the HCC group, compared with the CHB and LC groups (P <...

PURPOSE: To find parameters that can increase alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) sensitivity and so help in accurate diagnosis and rapid management of hepatocullular carcinoma (HCC), as AFP has limited utility of distinguishing HCC from benign hepatic disorders for its high false-positive and false negative rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum levels of AFP, 5'-nucleotidase enzyme activity (5-NU) and leucine aminopeptidase enzyme (LAP) activity were measured in 40 individuals...

Orlistat (tetrahydrolipostatin) is a lipase inhibitor which is used, in conjunction with appropriate dietary control, for the treatment of obesity. It is generally deemed to be a safe drug, which mainly exerts a topical action on the stomach and small bowel, with negligible systemic absorption and oral bioavailability. Consequently, its adverse effects have largely been limited to relatively mild gastrointestinal disorders. However, there have been recent, published reports of non-fatal acute hepatitis and systemic hypertension associated with its use...

Interleukin 1beta (IL-1beta) suppresses the IL-6-dependent induction of type II acute-phase response genes, but the underlying mechanism for this suppression remains uncertain. Here we report that treatment of human hepatocullular carcinoma HepG2 cells with IL-1beta inhibited the IL-6-dependent binding of signal transducer and activator of transcription factor (STAT)1, but not that of STAT3, to the high-affinity serum-inducible element ('SIE'). Furthermore, IL-1beta selectively down-regulated the IL-6-induced tyrosine phosphorylation of STAT1 without affecting the level of STAT1 or tyrosine phosphorylation of STAT3...

The registry of digestive tract cancers set up for the department of Cote d'Or (455, 727) was used to study primary liver cancer. The crude annual incidence rate was 10.4 per 100 000 for males, 2.3 per 100 000 for females. Among other cancer registries annual age standardized rates: 7.6 per 100 000 in males, 1.4 per 100 000 in females are in the intermediate range, close to the figure reported in Geneva and higher than incidence rates reported elsewhere in Europe. Most cancers were hepatocullular carcinomas (83%)...

The organizational pattern of hepatocytes in hyperplastic nodules, probable precursors of hepatocellular carcinoma, was examined sequentially at different stages in the carcinogenic process, and compared with the patterns in hepatocellular carcinomas, in developing liver and in regnerating liver. Scanning as well as transmission electron microscopy, and histochemistry with light microscopy were used. The hepatocytes in the hyperplastic lesions were arranged in plates 2 or more cells thick and glands, in contrast to the one-cell-thick plates of hepatocytes in normal mature liver, and showed unusualy separation from eachother, with irregularly dilated bile canaliculi...
