The cellular morphology and the three dimensional cytoarchitecture of layer I of the adult human acoustic cortex were studied by using sagittal, transverse and tangential Golgi preparations and electron microscopy. The prominent neuron of layer I of the acoustic cortex is the Retzius-Cajal cell which is a solitary neuron accompanied by satellite astrocytes located mostly below the pial surface in the upper third of the layer. Biopsy material from the vocal muscle of patients suffering from Steinert's muscular dystrophy, Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, oculopharyngeal progressive muscular dystrophy, and paraneoplastic myopathy was examined under the light and electron microscope. The histological findings were compatible with the muscular changes seen in the skeletal muscles of the extremities of the same patients. Explants from the temporal cortex of newborn Lewis rats were cultured in vitro in normal feeding medium and in nutrients enriched with hydrocortisone, progesterone and testosterone. The dendritic growth was estimated on the 7th, 14th and 21st day in the phase contrast microscope and finally on 28th day in the electron microscope. The explants which were cultured in a testosterone-enriched medium demonstrated a rapid and extensive dendritic growth and dendritic arborization. Neurons cultured in a progesterone-enriched medium demonstrated a marked dilatation of the cisternae of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and a rather moderate dendritic growth and moderate synaptogenesis, whereas neurons cultured in a hydrocortisone-enriched nutrient exhibited an increase in the number of the free ribosomes, various mitochondrial alterations and a rather rapid dendritic growth and dendritic arborization as well as a large accumulation of glucogen granules...

Hypoglycemia was induced by intracarotid insulin infusions in adult Lewis rats. Electron microscopy of the acoustic cortices in these animals revealed that hypoglycemia provoked marked morphological and morphometric alterations in the pre- and postsynaptic terminals present, as well as in the astrocytic processes seen. The number of the synaptic vesicles in the "active zone" of the synapses was dramatically decreased, with most of the vesicles loosely dispersed in the entire presynaptic profile. Some of the pre- and postsynaptic terminals were enlarged and contained dilated cisternae of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, as well as mitochondria exhibiting a marked internal disorganization...

Rat's temporal cortex was cultured in vitro in a feeding medium enriched with substance P. Normal controls were used for correlation. The ultrastructural study of the explant exposed to substance P revealed a marked increase of the polymorphism of the synaptic vesicles in the presynaptic terminals. Large numbers of the synaptic vesicles were large, of a mean diameter of 142.5 A, dark-looking like the catecholaminergic vesicles. Coated vesicles were seen in the presynaptic terminals as well as in the postsynaptic ones...
