BACKGROUND: High resistance to common antibiotics has become a huge global dilemma in eradicating Helicobacter Pylori infection in both children and adults. The great concern is about the resistance to different classes of antibiotics especially Clarithromycin because of its widespread use. The present survey aimed to assess the resistance rate to Clarithromycin in Helicobacter Pylori isolated in patients aged less than 15 years as compared to patients older than 15 years of age. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, total 72 patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms requiring diagnostic endoscopy referred to Rasoul-e-Akram Hospital in Tehran during one year (August 2015 to August 2016)...

OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium which has a serious effect on the up to half of the world's population and has been related to different gastric diseases. The goal of this study was to assess the frequency of babA, cagE and cagA genotypes among H. pylori strains isolated from gastric biopsies of endoscopic patients in the north of Iran. METHODS: The present study was performed on 90 strains of H. pylori isolated from patients with gastric diseases (Gastric ulcer (GU), Duodenal ulcer (DU), Gastritis (G), Non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) and Gastric adenocarcinoma (GC))...

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is one of the most common bacterial infections, affecting almost half of the world's population. It is associated with peptic ulcer disease, gastric adenocarcinoma, and lymphoma. In Iran, the prevalence of H. pylori infection has been reported to be between 36% and 90% in different geographic regions. Several studies have assessed the efficacy of different therapeutic options for firstline and second-line H. pylori eradication in Iran; however, the results are conflicting...

Background: Until now, no study has been reported investigating the association between β-thalassemia minor and Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori) infection. This study was designed to compare H. pylori infection rate between β-thalassemia minor patients and healthy controls. Methods: A number of 100 β-thalassemia minor patients (50 males, 50 females) and 100 gender-matched healthy controls were prospectively recruited in this study in a period of 3 months. The study population consisted of the people who referred to a health center in Babol, North of Iran, for premarital counseling...

Background: Over the past decade, cardiovascular diseases have been recognized as the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the most prevalent types of cardiovascular diseases that is caused by the closure of coronary arteries and ischemic heart muscle. Numerous studies have analyzed the role of H. pylori as a possible risk factor for coronary artery diseases, in most of which the role of infection in coronary artery disease is not statistically significant...

Brucellosis is endemic in Iran. Several studies have shown that brucellosis is associated with other infectious diseases. This study aimed to determine the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (HP) and brucellosis. In this case-control study, 100 patients with brucellosis as cases and 200 participants without brucellosis as controls were evaluated. To compare the prevalence of HP in the 2 groups, odds ratios and confidence intervals for every variable were analyzed using logistic regression models after adjustment for confounding factors...

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of clarithromycin-resistant strains of Helicobacter pylori is a main challenge for the successful treatment of gastrointestinal infections. Point mutations in the 23S rRNA gene are one of the main mechanisms leading to the resistance to clarithromycin in Iran. The purpose of the present review was to evaluate the prevalence of clarithromycin-resistant H. pylori strains in Iran and to identify the major molecular mechanisms of resistance in the resistant isolates...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Helicobacter pylori is a pathogen that colonizes a majority of the world's population. Genetic diversity within the virulence genes of bacteria such as cag PAI and vac A may have a modified effect on the pathogenic potential of the bacteria. This study aimed to investigate which genes can be suggested as potentially related virulence factors for H. pylori -associated active chronic gastritis and stomach adenocarcinoma in the northwest of Iran and south of Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded stomach biopsy tissue samples were obtained from Iranian and Turkish patients from selected geographical regions...

Foods with animal origins play a substantial role in the transmission of Helicobacter pylori. The present investigation was carried out to study the vacA and cagA genotypes status of H. pylori isolated from various types of meat samples. Two hundred and twenty meat samples were collected and cultured. H. pylori-positive strains were analyzed for the presence of vacA and cagA genotypes. Eleven out of 220 (5.00%) samples were positive for H. pylori. Findings were confirmed by nested PCR. Prevalence of H. pylori in the meat samples of slaughterhouses and butcheries were 72...

There is diversity in clinical outcome of Helicobacter pylori infection in different regions. Microbial, host and environmental factors seem to be reason of such variation. Considering microbial factors, we studied H. pylori genotypes and their association with clinical feature of the infection. Overall 160 H. pylori-positive patients were enrolled in this study. Clinical information and biopsy were collected from each patient. The presence of the major virulence genes were determined by PCR. Regardless to clinical outcomes, vacA, cagA, cagE, oipA, iceA1, babA2 and babB genes was positive in 100%, 69%, 51%, 55%, 26%,78% and 28% of 160 strains respectively...

We examined the role of Helicobacter pylori infection as a cause of recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) among Iranian children in a population-based case-control study to determine the association between H. pylori infection and RAP among schoolchildren. A total of 1558 children aged 6-13 years were examined. Children with RAP confirmed by the Apley and Naish criteria were selected; 145 cases were selected for inclusion and were compared with 145 healthy children recruited from the same area. Both groups underwent stool antigen testing...

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) usually colonizes the gastric mucosa of more than 50% of the human population, causing an infection that may appear in early childhood and can persist for life. H. pylori is suggested as the main cause of peptic ulcer and chronic gastritis. It is also associated with gastric cancer. Its severity and symptoms depend on environmental factors, host susceptibility and bacterial components, which allow H. pylori to switch between commensalism and pathogenicity. H. pylori is genetically highly variable, and the variability which affects H...

Helicobacter pylori as the second most common cause of gastric cancer in the world infects approximately half of the developed countries population and 80% of the population living in developing countries. Integrons as genetic reservoirs play major roles in dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report carriage of class 1 and 2 integrons and associated gene cassettes in H. pylori isolates from Iran. This crosssectional study was conducted in Tehran among 110 patients with H...

Gastric cancer (GC) is a multifactorial disease with different factors having roles in its genesis. Helicobacter pylori and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) are known infectious agents that could contribute. In addition, there is evidence of a relationship with cytomegalovirus (CMV). Since data on CMV prevalence in gastric cancer are limited, we here evaluated the frequency of EBV and CMV in Iranian patients. Ninety paraffin blocks of GC tissues from patients in Kerman were evaluated for the presence of EBV and CMV genomes by real-time polymerase chain reaction...

Helicobacter pylori infection is a common health problem related to many gastrointestinal disorders. This study aims to estimate the total and age specific prevalence of Helicobacter Pylori infection in Iran. We systematically reviewed all national and international databases and finally identified 21 studies were eligible for meta-analysis. Each of them were assigned a quality score using STROBE checklist. Due to significant heterogeneity of the results, random effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence and 95% confidence interval of Helicobacter Pylori infection...
