Some authors argue that it is permissible for clinicians to conscientiously provide abortion services because clinicians are already allowed to conscientiously refuse to provide certain services. Call this the symmetry thesis. We argue that on either of the two main understandings of the aim of the medical profession-what we will call "pathocentric" and "interest-centric" views-conscientious refusal and conscientious provision are mutually exclusive. On pathocentric views, refusing to provide a service that takes away from a patient's health is professionally justified because there are compelling reasons, based on professional standards, to refuse to provide that service (e...

INTRODUCTION: Health policies reflect the ideas and interests of the actors involved. The Indian Government constituted many health committees for policy recommendations on myriad issues concerning public health, ranging from tribal health to drug regulation. However, little is known about their composition and backgrounds. We reviewed these committees to map the actors and institutions. METHODS: We elicited information on all relevant health committees available in the public domain...

This article raises the question of whether bioethics qualifies as a discipline. According to a standard definition of discipline as "a field of study following specific and well-established methodological rules" bioethics is not a specific discipline as there are no explicit "well-established methodological rules." The article investigates whether the methodological rules can be implicit, and whether bioethics can follow specific methodological rules within subdisciplines or for specific tasks. As this does not appear to be the case, the article examines whether bioethics' adherence to specific quality criteria (instead of methodological rules) or pursuing of a common goal can make it qualify as a discipline...

AIM: Workplace incivility is a barrier to safe and high-quality patient care in nursing workplaces and more broadly in tertiary hospitals. The present study aims to systematically review the existing evidence to provide a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence of co-worker incivility experienced and witnessed by nurses and other healthcare professionals, the effects of incivility on patient safety culture (PSC) and patient outcomes, and the factors which mediate the relationship between incivility and patient safety...

AIMS: This study aimed to assess the awareness of the risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) among general dental practitioners (GDPs) and primary care physicians (PCPs), focusing on the clinical implications and coordination of treating or identifying high-risk patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two Google Forms electronic questionnaires were distributed to 724 GDPs and 617 PCPs in primary care settings. BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the growing relevance of telehealth in health care. Assessing health care and nursing students' telehealth competencies is crucial for its successful integration into education and practice. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess students' perceived telehealth knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experiences. In addition, we aimed to examine students' preferences for telehealth content and teaching methods within their curricula...

Phenomenon : Black women often face more challenges in academic medicine than others and are leaving the profession due to unsupportive work environments, systematic neglect, and experiences of invisibility. Research offers insight into Black women faculty experiences, but studies have largely been conducted on their experiences rather than written by them. We analyzed first-person narratives exploring Black women faculty members' experiences with racial trauma across the academy considering the intersectionality of racism and sexism to lay the foundation for understanding Black women physicians' faculty experiences in similar spaces...

Medical school often has opportunities for students to engage in peer or near-peer teaching, however structured teacher training is rarely conducted. We present an Educational Fellowship for rising M2 students as teaching assistants for first year Physician Assistant students. In this near-peer interprofessional teaching model, the M2 students learn pedagogical theory and best practices for teaching and learning. The curriculum and experience may be used by any healthcare profession. Since many healthcare professions have classes during the summer, we present our program as a conceptual model for other institutions...

BACKGROUND: Feasible and effective assessment approaches to measuring competency in health sciences are vital in competency-based education. Educational programmes for health professions in low- and middle-income countries are increasingly adopting competency-based education as a strategy for training health professionals. Importantly, the organisation of assessments and assessment approaches must align with the available resources and still result in the fidelity of implementation. A review of existing assessment approaches, frameworks, models, and methods is essential for the development of feasible and effective assessment approaches in low-resource settings...

In healthcare professions, soft skills contribute to critical thinking, decision-making, and patient-centered care. While important to the delivery of high-quality medical care, soft skills are often underemphasized during healthcare training in low-and-middle-income countries. Despite South Asia's large population, the efficacy and viability of a digital soft skills curriculum for South Asian healthcare practitioners has not been studied to date. We hypothesized that a web-based, multilingual, soft skills course could aid the understanding and application of soft skills to improve healthcare practitioner knowledge, confidence, attitudes, and intent-to-change clinical practice...

An adverse event is defined as an unwanted and unexpected occurrence in a medical process that may end in harm to the patient. In the USA the number of deaths due to failures reaches 253,000 per year. In Israel, over 10,000 deaths occur per year due to errors in the medical treatment of hospitalized patients, the third most common cause of death after heart disease and cancer. The main cause of failures in medical diagnosis and treatment is the complexity of the medical profession. A large number of caregivers in different medical disciplines are needed to treat one patient, therefore there are many errors, especially regarding communication between therapists...

Health professions education is one of the pillars of academic medicine; however, clinical educators often lack the appropriate resources to succeed in this field. Examples of these challenges include: lack of support for faculty development, mentorship, and high cost of resources, when available. In addition, challenges such as the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic can affect healthcare personnel who are already struggling to provide adequate patient care while attempting to succeed in the role of educator and supervisor of trainees...

The relationship of mentally ill patients and the relational society has constantly changed during the course of history. The changes are true reflexions of the given society. In the management of behaviours disturbing community life medical treatment, law enforcement and religious measures change periodically, sometimes one, sometimes the other comes to the fore. One of the most influential spiritual currents of the 20th century has been the dismantling of large institutions, called deinstitutionalisation, which process could be experienced by the currently active professional generations...
