The phosphate-modified biochar (BC) immobilizes cadmium (Cd), yet little is known about how phosphate species affect Cd detoxification in contaminated soils. We developed phosphate-modified biochar through the pyrolysis of wheat straw impregnated with three types of phosphate: mono‑potassium phosphate (MKP), dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (DKP), and tripotassium phosphate (TKP). The Cd adsorption mechanism of modified biochar was investigated by biochar characterization, adsorption performance evaluation, and soil incubation tests...

In a patient with severe unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis where conservative treatments have been exhausted, with painful symptoms located on the affected side and with a reducible axis, the unicompartmental knee prosthesis (UKP) is the first option for our work group. Within the study to confirm the diagnosis and plan the surgery, weight-bearing knee x-rays, Rosenberg x-rays, and teleradiographs of the lower extremities stand out. The objective of surgery is to replace the affected area, restoring the anatomy with an adequate balance of soft tissues...

PURPOSE: To present a technique for optimizing repair of traumatic retinal detachments (RDs). METHODS: A patient was followed in an outpatient setting with clinical examinations, optical coherence tomography, widefield fundus photography, and anterior segment imaging. RESULTS: The patient presented with a total RD after ruptured globe repair. The patient had combined corneal and retinal surgery with placement of a temporary keratoprosthesis (TKP) and vitrectomy with perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) to reattach the retina...

As an adsorbent for waste water treatment, an eco-friendly biodegradable hydrogel was utilized in an effort to reduce the hydrogel production costs and decrease its negative impact on the environment. The biodegradable hydrogel of natural polysaccharides, tamarind kernel powder (tkp) with kappa-carrageenan (kcg), was employed as an adsorbent to remove cationic dyes from an aqueous environment. The impact of factors such as initial adsorbate concentration, pH, contact time, temperature, and adsorbent dosage on maximum adsorption were investigated...

PURPOSE: Corneal pathology can obstruct the visualization required for surgical management of coexisting posterior segment diseases, and use of a temporary keratoprosthesis (TKP) permits combined penetrating keratoplasty (PK) and vitreoretinal surgery. We evaluated graft outcomes after TKP for combined PK and vitreoretinal surgery and analyzed risk factors for graft failure. METHODS: We reviewed the electronic medical records for patients who underwent TKP for PK combined with vitreoretinal surgery at Wills Eye Hospital between May 2007 and April 2021...

BACKGROUND: Water extraction (WE) is the classical extraction method for tamarind xyloglucan (XyG), but its low yield, high viscosity and poor dispersion in aqueous solution are not conducive to the industrial applications. In order to promote the industrial application of tamarind XyG, an ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) method for extracting low-viscosity XyG from tamarind kernel powder (TKP) was proposed. RESULTS: The yield of UAE-XyG was higher (502.33 g·kg-1 ± 0...

Glutamate-receptor-mediated hyperexcitability contributes to seizure generation in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Tryptophan-kynurenine pathway (TKP) metabolites regulate glutamate receptor activity under physiological conditions. This study was designed to investigate alterations in the levels of TKP metabolites and the differential regulation of glutamatergic activity by TKP metabolites in the hippocampus, anterior temporal lobe (ATL), and neocortex samples of a lithium-pilocarpine rat model of TLE. We observed that levels of tryptophan were reduced in the hippocampus and ATL samples but unaltered in the neocortex samples...

The dysregulation of tryptophan-kynurenine pathway (TKP) is extensively involved in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease, depression, and neurodegenerative disorders. Minocycline, a classic antibiotic, may exert psychotropic effects associated with the modulation of TKP. In this study, we examined the effects of minocycline in improving behaviour and modulating TKP components in chronically stressed male mice. Following repeated treatment with 22.5 mg/kg and 45 mg/kg minocycline for 27 days, the stressed mice particularly with higher dose displayed significant improvement on cognitive impairment, depression- and anxiety-like behaviour...

Automatic and precise segmentations of renal artery trees are required to improve the workflow of SRAC in NSS. Type 2 diabetes is associated with an inflammatory phenotype in the pancreatic islets. We previously demonstrated that proinflammatory cytokines potently activate the tryptophan/kynurenine pathway (TKP) in INS-1 cells and in normal rat islets. Here we examined: (1) the TKP enzymes expression in the diabetic GK islets; (2) the TKP enzymes expression profiles in the GK islets before and after the onset of diabetes; (3) The glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) in vitro in GK islets after KMO knockdown using specific morpholino-oligonucleotides against KMO or KMO blockade using the specific inhibitor Ro618048; (4) The glucose tolerance and GSIS after acute in vivo exposure to Ro618048 in GK rats...

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has resulted in long-term psychiatric symptoms because of the immunologic response to the virus itself as well as fundamental life changes related to the pandemic. This immune response leads to altered tryptophan (TRP)-kynurenine (KYN) pathway (TKP) metabolism, which plays an essential role in the pathophysiology of mental illnesses. We aimed to define TKP changes as a potential underlying mechanism of psychiatric disorders in post-COVID-19 patients. We measured plasma levels of several TKP markers, including KYN, TRP, kynurenic acid (KYNA), 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HK), and quinolinic acid (QUIN), as well as the TRP/KYN, KYNA/3-HK, and KYNA/QUIN ratios, in 90 post-COVID-19 patients (on the first day of hospitalization) and 59 healthy controls (on the first admission to the Check-Up Center)...
